There is sun to be found on a beach somewhere for most of the year, best time to visit Thailand is almost any time of the year.

Generally speaking when looking at the weather, we recommend considering the distinct regions.

Northern Thailand, Bangkok, the Andaman Coast (west coast) and Gulf of Thailand (east coast) all have different weather patterns. Here is an overview of the different areas:

Northern Thailand: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai

Bangkok: Bangkok, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi, Ayutthaya, Erawan National Park

Andaman Coast: Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Yao Yai, Koh Lanta, Khao Sok National Park

North Gulf of Thailand: Koh Chang, Koh Kood

South Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Ko Tao

For example, you may want to visit the west coast islands during the summer but it’s the rainy season? Yet it’s not the rainy season on the east coast islands. Confused? Don’t worry we’ll reveal all as we take you through everything you need to know about Thailand weather.

Overall the dry season, which runs from November to April, is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon.

The only time we’d recommend avoiding is mid September to October which is when the heaviest rains of the season arrive throughout the country.

If you have respiratory problems, it’s worth noting that burning season happens in Northern Thailand and air quality can be bad, particularly from February to April.

Best Time To Visit Thailand by Month

In Bangkok temperatures average  28°C (82°F) but there is little rainfall (although this is Bangkok so it feels hot and humid year round!)

Explore the jungle heartland in Northern Thailand around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai where rainfall is practically non-existent at this time and temperatures are extremely pleasant averaging around 20°C (68°F).

January is one of the best times to visit Thailand for the Andaman Coast Islands. Areas like Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi and Phi Phi have average temperatures of 28°C (82°F), if you see any rain it will usually be brief.

At this time of year the Gulf of Thailand will see some showers but they’re usually short and not every day (less than 10 days in the month will see some rain).

So if off the beaten track gems like Koh Kood or popular spots like Koh Samui are on the short list, you’re good to go!

As January is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon, prices are also at their peak, particularly earlier in the month around the Christmas and New Year break. It’s a good idea to book early for the best availability and prices. 

Bangkok is a hot city and while historically the averages are 28°C (82°F), expect it to be a few degrees warmer. There is little rainfall at this time of year so the conditions are ideal for exploring the city.

Up country in Northern Thailand, the lush green landscapes of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have an average temperature of 23°C (75°F). They experience little rainfall at this time of year, meaning it’s ideal to visit elephant sanctuaries and hike to waterfalls and rural villages. 

It’s one of the best times to visit Thailand for the west coast gems. The Andaman Coast areas of Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and islands like Koh Yao Noi, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta are some of our favourites with stunning island scenery.

It’s sunny and warm and temperatures average 27°C (81°F).

Over on the Gulf of Thailand islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phang Nan and Ko Tao, it’s the start of the dry season with minimal rainfall and an average temperature of 27°C (81°F).

In the northern part of the Gulf of Thailand islands like Koh Chang and Koh Kood are also sunny and generally dry. If you get rain, it will usually pass quickly.

As February is one of the peak months and the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon, we’d recommend booking early. You can ensure the best availability and prices for your dream honeymoon.

In Bangkok temperatures have averaged 29°C (85°F) historically, although the mercury can go a lot higher. There is minimal rainfall so it’s ideal for visits to the Grand Palace and the Buddhist temples.

Although Thailand is majority Buddhist, westerners flock to Thailand for Easter whether it falls in March or April.

Up in the north of the country around Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pai and the Golden Triangle temperatures start to rise but still a relatively pleasant 27°C (81°F) with very little rainfall.

These areas are a true highlight of Thailand and a must-add on if you’re travelling to Thailand in March.

On the islands of the Andaman Coast, the weather is usually as close to perfect as you’re going to get in areas like Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak and the surrounding islands. Temperature average 28°C (82°F).

On the eastern side it’s also a low rainfall type of month.

If exploring Koh Samui, scuba diving in Koh Tao or going to the full moon party on Koh Phagnan is on your list or getting a little more off the beaten track in the northern Gulf of Thailand islands then it’s the best time to visit Thailand for this side of the country. 

As March is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon, and it can clash with Easter, we recommend booking early to ensure the best availability and prices!

If you can travel outside of the two weeks either side of Easter, not only will you save money, you’ll also avoid the crowds.

In Bangkok it’s hot and often humid like it is year round. Temperatures average around 30°C (86°F) although it can be and feel hotter.

Up north around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the junglescapes are worth the flight.

You may get the odd shower and temperatures have increased to  29°C (85°F) on average, but generally there is little rain in the month of April, although later in the month showers will increase.

Down south in the beach areas, you can bask in the sun on the Gulf of Thailand islands around Koh Samui with only 5 days of the month seeing some rain showers.

Over on the west coast around Phuket and Krabi, things are transitioning from dry season to rainy season. While not a washout as the month progresses isolated showers can become the norm.

About 11 days in April will see occasional rain showers but it’s still relatively dry.

If you’re wondering, is April a good time to visit Thailand? It definitely is, but just be prepared for the odd shower and thunderstorm.

Also, Thailand is a popular destination during the easter break which often falls in April.

In Bangkok temperatures are hot and humid, averaging temperature 31°C (88°F). About 17 days of the month see some rain and this usually presents itself as heavy downpours or shower.

Similar conditions prevail in the north of the country. Around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai over half the days of the month will see some rain.

On the Andaman Coast around favourites like Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak and islands like Phi Phi experience the third wettest month of the year.

Now that doesn’t mean you’ll see rain all day every day but the showers can be heavy and thunderous. You can get very cheap luxury hotel deals at this time.

If you’re planning on visiting Thailand in May, then opt for the east coast islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phang Nan and Koh Tao.

While you may see showers on the gulf of Thailand, they are not usually as heavy as the west coast. For example Koh Samui sees 150mm of rain on average, while Phuket sees 350mm!

May is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon if you’re OK with some rain and want to avail of cheaper prices and fewer crowds.

There are indeed more favourable times to explore if you’re looking for the best Thailand weather (although the east coast islands are usually fine).

In Bangkok, the climate remains damp and hot, with average temperatures hovering around 31°C (88°F). Expect about 18 days with rainfall, typically manifesting as brisk showers or intense downpours.

A similar weather pattern is observed in the northern regions. Places like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai experience rainfall on more than half the days in June.

Turning to the Andaman Coast, popular destinations such as Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and the Phi Phi Islands, it’s the middle of rainy season in June.

While constant rain is unlikely, the downpours can be both heavy and sudden. On the plus side, this low season period means fantastic discounts on accommodation.

For couples considering a Thailand honeymoon in June, the east coast islands like Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are better. The Gulf of Thailand sees lighter showers and only about 1 in 4 days of the month.

June is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon if you’re OK with some rain and want to avail of cheaper prices and fewer crowds. Stick with the east coast islands for the best weather.

In Bangkok, the weather remains warm and humid, with temperatures averaging around 31°C (88°F). Around 19 days of July will see some rainfall, usually in the form of sudden, short, intense downpours.

This weather pattern extends to the north. In areas like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, rain occurs around 21 days out of the month – not exactly ideal for jungle trekking.

On the islands temperatures are steady at around  31°C (88°F).

On the Andaman Coast, beloved spots such as Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and the Phi Phi Islands experience some of the rainiest time of year. While it’s not necessarily going to rain 24/7,  the showers and thunderstorms can be quite strong and sudden.

For couples planning a honeymoon in Thailand during July, the eastern islands, including Koh Samui, Koh Phang Nan, and Koh Tao, are more suitable.

These islands, in the Gulf of Thailand, generally experience milder rainfall compared to their western counterparts. For instance, Koh Samui sees half the average rainfall than Phuket in July.

The northern Gulf of Thailand islands like Koh Kood and Koh Chang are worth checking out too.

This pattern is mirrored in the northern regions. In locales such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, most days in August are likely to experience rain, high humidity and thunderstorms.

On the west coast islands temperatures average 31°C (88°F) with favourites like Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta, and the Phi Phi Islands, encountering one of its peak rainy months.

Continuous rain all day every day is unusual, but when it does shower, it’s often heavy and abrupt. You can avail of fantastic hotel offers but be prepared – around 23 days in the month experience rain.

For those contemplating a Thailand honeymoon in August, the eastern islands – Koh Samui, Koh Phang Nan, and Koh Tao – are advisable.

These islands in the Gulf of Thailand typically see less severe rain than the west coast. For perspective, Koh Samui gets about half the rainfall of Phuket in August.

It’s officially the rainiest month in Bangkok with heavy rainfall throughout the city most days of the month. Temperatures average 30°C (86°F).

In Northern Thailand, the pattern is similar to Bangkok with most days seeing rain. It’s officially the wettest month in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and Pai, so not ideal for jungle adventures.

The Andaman Coastline with gems like Phuket, Phi Phi islands, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak see the most rain of the year in September – a phenomenal 400mm on average. Average temperatures hover around 27°C (81°F) 

On the islands in the Gulf of Thailand on the west coast, it’s the last month of the dry seasons.

As throughout most of the year Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Ko Tao may get some showers but less than half the days of the month. However heavy monsoon rains usually arrive later in the month.

If you’re set on a honeymoon exploring all of Thailand we’d recommend picking a different month (or maybe opt for Bali, where it’s the dry season?)

While the rain in Bangkok isn’t as bad as the previous month, you should expect heavy showers. Temperatures average  28°C (83°F).

Like Bangkok, in Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai in the north, the rain eases off compared to September and later in the month is less risky for heavy downpours.

In the Andaman Coast areas like Phuket, Krabi & Khao Lak, the average temperature is around 27°C (81°F) but most days of the month will see some rain. This can be regular thunderous downpours or just occasional showers.  

The Gulf of Thailand islands like Koh Chang and Koh Samui experience some of the heaviest rainfall of the year. While temperatures average 28°C (82°F), over half the months will see some rainy days. These could be daily showers or full rainy days.

September is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon if you’re OK with rain and want to avail of cheaper prices and fewer crowds. 

In Bangkok, temperatures average around  27°C (81°F) although it can be and feel hotter, rainfall is minimal so it’s a great time of year for sightseeing, shopping and partying. 

Up north around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, the weather has improved compared to the previous month. Although you may get the odd shower and temperatures have decreased to 25°C (77°F) on average making it a wonderful time to explore Thailand’s rural scenes.

Down south in the beach areas, on the Andaman side around Phuket, Krabi and heavenly islands like Phi Phi, Koh Yao Noi, it’s the tail end of the monsoon rains, so you can still expect some rainy days.

About half the days of the month will see some showers but the skies get clearer as the month goes on.

Over on the west coast around Phuket and Krabi things are transitioning from dry season to rainy season. While not a washout as the month progresses isolated showers can become the norm.

About 11 days in November will see occasional rain showers but it’s still relatively dry.

On the east coast the islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are experiencing their wettest months.

Koh Samui gets double the rainfall of Phuket in November so we’d recommend sticking with the west coast islands in November.

The northern Gulf of Thailand islands don’t get quite as much rain so you could explore Koh Chang and Koh Kood as an alternative also.

As December is the best time to visit Thailand for honeymoon, prices are also at their peak, particularly later in the month around the Christmas and New Year break.

It’s a good idea to book early for the best availability and prices or if you can, travel earlier in the month.
