Best time to visit Santorini for honeymoon
The best time to visit Santorini for a honeymoon is from late April to June and September to October.
These are the shoulder season months. They can be busy but not as busy as high season.
High season is July and August which is the peak times for crowds, cruise ships and prices. Because the island sits high above sea level, Santorini doesn’t get as hot as other islands in the region.
Even in the high summer, temperatures average 25 °C / 75 °F during the day, although Greece has since heatwaves in recent years making the mercury go higher.
During winter from November to February, Santorini is quiet, with some rain and cooler temperatures (on average around 10°C / 50 °F).
Winter is a beautiful, authentic time to explore the island. However, the vast majority of the luxury honeymoon hotels and many restaurants and bars will be closed with limited ferry and flight schedules.
Where to stay on a Santorini honeymoon
Santorini’s dazzling, picture-perfect cliffside towns and beautiful hotels with romantic honeymoon suites overlooking the Aegean sea are a honeymoon dream.
Most of the images you see of Santorini are of its west coast towns and villages – Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia.
These villages overlook the caldera cliffs (the caldera is a volcano centre) and have divine sunset views.
Although, it’s true that most couples come to Santorini for the romantic views of the caldera, if you’re planning a budget escape, you could consider a stay in the middle of the island or in the south / southeast of the island, which has many lovely hotel spots.
When choosing a Santorini honeymoon hotel with private plunge pools and private jacuzzis on private terraces, beware that sometimes they are not completely private.
Because of the curving, cliffside nature of the hotels, other tourists may see you from a distance (and even sometimes up close). Ideal for voyeurs, but not ideal for couples on a honeymoon trip seeking seclusion and privacy.
You will pay well into 4-figures per night, for complete privacy in high season.
Santorini is not an all-inclusive, resort style honeymoon destination. There are no large, sprawling resorts and most of the hotels are small and boutique style.
Many hotel rooms come with outdoor jacuzzis or an outdoor infinity pool with spectacular views.
You will usually book a hotel on a bed & breakfast basis. The beauty of this is that you can explore authentic Greek cuisine throughout the island!
Food lovers will be in heaven in Santorini with so many lovely restaurants on the island. It’s well worth booking restaurants with a view well in advance to avoid disappointment.
From hyper luxury hotels to family-run boutiques boltholes, we’ve got ideas for every budget. Let’s take you around Santorini…
Don’t miss our definitive list of the Best Honeymoon Hotels in Santorini
Fira
The town of Fira is the capital of Santorini. It’s buzzy and full of life and can get crowded. It’s an excellent base to get around the island easily with beautiful views plus plenty of dining and nightlife.
For couples on a tighter budget, there are also some great affordable hotels here.
You can take the creaky cable car down to the port. The Catholic Cathedral and Orthodox Church in Fira are beautiful, too.
Just north of Fira (about a 15-minute walk) is the quieter village area of Firostefani, which is a lovely place to stay too with elevated views and the location of one of the most famous blue dome churches.
If you’re looking for the best Santorini honeymoon hotels in Fira, check out Cosmopolitan Suites has a great infinity pool, right in the middle of Fira. Athina Luxury Suites is another similar option. Villa Bordeaux has 4 stunning suites in a neoclassical Venetian house.
If you’re planning a honeymoon on a more modest budget, Astro Palace Hotel & Suites is a midrange option and Keti Hotel is in a quieter Fira location with all the views. Atlantis Hotel and Aressana Spa Hotel And Suites are both centrally located.
Firostefani has some Santorini honeymoon gems like Danas Villas & Infinity Suites, The Tsitouras Collection and Homeric Poems.
Imerovigli
Imerovigli is just north of Fira & Firostefani. It’s quieter with the most stunning caldera views. It’s where many of the best hotels in Santorini are located.
Imerovigli is where you go when you want sunsets and romance without the crowds.
The village is the highest point of the caldera and overlooks Skaros Rock, which is a rock formation with an ancient Venetian castle. The Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti is below, facing out to sea.
If you’re looking for the best Santorini honeymoon hotels in Imerovigli, you’re in luck as some of the best most romantic honeymoon spots are here!
For luxury, Andronis Concept Wellness Resort and Katikies Chromata Santorini are two of the best options on the island. Kapari Natural Resort, Iconic Santorini, Grace Santorini.
The Vasilicos or Aenaon Villas are both beautiful too, carved into the rocks of Santorini.
If you’re on a tighter budget, check out Above Blue Suites and Iliovasilema Hotel & Suites.
Oia
Oia (pronounced ee-yah), along with Imerovigli, is usually the first choice for couples planning a Santorini honeymoon. The Blue Domed churches are iconic.
Up close, this village is beautiful, with marble pathways and whiter than whitewashed captain’s houses, cave hotels and churches. As the most beautiful village in Greece, it attracts throngs of people.
For sunset, many people travel from other parts of the island along with cruise ship passengers to view the famous view from Oia Castle.
Although earlier in the day, sometimes it’s not too crowded, even in the high season if you get to avoid the larger cruise ship crowds.
The village is south facing, perfect for the sun during the day. Rather than over the caldera like in Fira and Imerovigli, the sun sets behind the stunning village vista with traditional houses hugging the steep cliffs.
Ammoudi Bay below the town is one of the main departure and arrival points for boat tours.
Oia is home to some of Santorini’s most luxurious hotels and lots of great restaurants. Andronis Boutique Hotel, Canaves Ena or Katikies Santorini (all 3 have multiple properties) will be WOW – a Santorini honeymoon dream and to be honest it’s hard to choose a favourite!
Aspaki Exclusive Hotel & Oia Castle Luxury Suites or Santo Pure Oia Suites & Villas are worth checking out, too.
1864 The Sea Captain’s House, one of Santorini’s most unique places to stay and Esperas Oia Santorini are great options if you’re on a tighter budget but really want to stay in Oia.
Perissa and Kamari
On the south-east coast of Santorini, you’ll find villages with black sand beaches and pebble beaches. These areas are a little more down to earth, away from the famed cliffside views of the west coast.
However, they are only a short bus or taxi ride away from each other. This side of the island is excellent value if you’re OK not to have the views.
You’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars to keep you entertained. These areas are also perfect if you’re planning a familymoon to Santorini.
Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios are three villages along one long three kilometre stretch of black sand beach. Kamari’s beach is pebblier.
In Perissa, Istoria Santorini is a high end option but there are some cheaper options for a budget Santorini honeymoon including Kouros Village Hotel Adults Only, Anastasia Princess Luxury Residence & Spa, Adults Only and Aqua Blue Beach Hotel.
In Kamari, Bellonias Villas, Cavo Bianco Boutique Hotel & Spa and Casa Vitae Suites
Off The Beaten Track Areas of Santorini
New hotels keep popping up in less established areas and even in high season can be a little more reasonable.
Santorini Sky Luxury Resort and Spa and Santorini Heights in Pyrgos are worth checking out.
The town was the old capital and is in the centre of the island. Near the town, the Monastery of Prophet Elias is also the island’s highest point. The views are incredible and ideal if you want an authentic part of Santorini away from the crowds.
Nous Santorini in Messaria is another area to consider, just three kilometres north of Pyrgos.
The peninsula of Akrotiri in the island’s southwest is a lesser discovered gem, too. Red Beach is here with striking cliffs stained by iron ore.
Akrotiri Lighthouse has stunning sunset views with barely a crowd in comparison to the west and northwest and the Akrotiri Prehistoric Village date back to Minoan times.
Between Pyrgos and Akrotiri, you’ll find wineries and the Heart of Santorini and Santorini honeymoon gems like Apanemo Hotel & Suites, Astarte Suites and Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort
In summary, if you’re confused about where to stay on your Santorini honeymoon, don’t worry, all of the island is beautiful!
Choose Fira for nightlife, views and convenience and choose Oia for the views and high-end luxury and dining. Choose Imerovigli for quiet romance and luxury and choose Perissa & Kamari for beaches and Pyrgos & Akrotiri for less crowded off-the-beaten track vibes.
Things to do on a Santorini honeymoon
It is so very tempting to just lie by the pool or stay on your verandah / balcony with jacuzzi (or if you’re lucky, your private cave pool), overlooking the incredible blues and whites but Santorini has many things to do those who even make just a little effort!
Here is a run down on the best things to do on a Santorini honeymoon:
Catch the Santorini sunset
You may be planning this Santorini honeymoon just for the sunsets! If you’re lucky enough to nab that Santorini honeymoon suite with sunset views then you may not have to leave your room,
However, despite the crowds, it’s worth seeing the sunset hues from Oia Castle. Opt for a sunset dinner with cocktails in hot spots like PK Cocktail Bar and Argo.
If you want to get away from the heaving crowds, then quieter places like Pyrgos, Prophet Elias Monastery, or Akrotiri Lighthouse are worth checking out.
Wine Tasting
Santorini is home to the prized Assyrtiko grape and there are over 20 wineries. Visit gems like like Vassaltis Vineyard and Santo Winery. We love this private 5-Hour wine tour or opt for a sunset wine tour.
Hike from Fira to Oia
There are some lovely hiking tails in Santorini, but the hike from Fira to Oia is the most famous.
The hike covers around ten kilometres (or six miles) of the sloping rocks of the island, and the breathtaking views are 100% worth it.
It’s a moderate trek, taking taking around 3 hours(and an extra hour if you take a detour to Imerovigli’s Skaros rock). It’s best started at sunrise or timed to end with an Oia sunset, you can start in Imerovigli to shorten the journey.
Pack SPF, water and wear practical shoes. This is one of our top picks for things to do on a Santorini honeymoon.
Horse Riding
Experience Santorini’s beauty in a unique way with a horseback riding excursion through the hills or along the volcanic beaches and see the sunset, perfect for adventure lovers and experienced riders.
Santorini Honeymoon Boat Trip
The magical Aegean sea is best explored on a beautiful boat trip. There are some stunning Santorini boat tours to choose from.
Take a tour of the caldera bay waters. Stop at Red Beach and White beaches. Snorkel in hot springs, and explore Thirasia, across the Caldera.
You can book a group tour or, if budget allows, how romantic would a private tailor-made catamaran cruise be?
Akrotiri Prehistoric City
Dive into history at Akrotiri, a significant archaeological site known as the ‘Greek Pompeii’.
In the Bronze Age, a cloud of ash preserved the settlement after a huge volcanic eruption which formed the Santorini and neighbouring islands we know today.
It was a city of the ancient Minoan people. A guided tour is 100% worth it – you can book a group tour or a private tour.
Biking
Cycling around Santorini is a beautiful way to see the island. You would need a good level of fitness and if you’re worried, you can take an electric bike tour.
This is a great way to get around and a wonderful way to see the island.
Sea Kayaking
The crystal clear Aegean blue water is a haven for sea kayaking and it’s an unforgettable way to spend a day on your Santorini honeymoon.
Kayak past the Red beach and white beach before stopping for a lunchtime picnic in the Santorini sun!
Greek Cooking Class
Greek cooking and Greek produce are, in a word, divine. Foodies will be in heaven in Greece. Moussaka, souvlaki, tzatziki, bougatsa and kolokithokeftedes.
What better way to make the most of your Santorini honeymoon and learn to make some highlights yourselves?
Take a hands-on cooking class with a local chef. Whenever you repeat the dishes at home, it will take you back to your blissful Santorini honeymoon.
Watch a Movie Outdoors
Kamari has an outdoor, open air cinema showing classic movies, Cine Kamari or Santorini Cinema.
Grab some blankets and Greek wine or cocktails from the bar. This is one of the coolest places to watch a movie in the world!
Explore the best Santorini beaches
It’s not known for its beaches, yet Santorini island has unique beaches just waiting to be explored!
As a volcanic island you won’t find tropical palm trees or white sand like the ones found on the best beaches in the world lists in honeymoon destinations like Mauritius.
However, you’ll find distinctive volcanic beaches dotted around the island.
The most popular are buzzy black beach at Kamari and Perissa. Consider an afternoon at Red Beach. White beach is more secluded and usually accessed by boat.
If you want white or yellow sand, try an island-hopping honeymoon. We love Sarakiniko in Milos, Plaka Beach in Naxos and Elafonisi in Crete.
Unleash your inner supermodel
You’re looking beautiful, feeling great after your wedding, and you’ve seen the glamorous pictures on the ‘gram.
Well, why not create a beautiful fashion moment for yourselves with a Flying Dress Photoshoot?
A lovely keepsake of your romantic Santorini honeymoon. We promise you don’t have to be a model to do this!

A few phrases in Greek:
Hi: Yassou (ya-su)
Thank you: Efcharisto (ef-carrie-sto)
Goodbye: Ya
It’s hard to fathom that the famed beauty of the Greek island of Santorini could end any time because it’s at the mercy of a dormant volcano (albeit one that is closely monitored!).
Civilisations have ended, yet people still flock to this stunning rocky outcrop throughout the ages. Maybe the reason it is so beguiling is that it won’t last forever.
Santorini is a part of the Cyclades, a group of heavenly islands in the Aegean Sea in Greece. Santorini is actually a nickname given centuries ago by the Turks and the official name is Thira (after a Spartan King).
Despite a tiny population of fifteen and a half thousand people, they say that at least 1.5 million people flock to this island every year by plane, cruise ship and ferry.
Santorini Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions
Is Santorini good for a honeymoon?
Absolutely! Santorini is one of the most beautiful honeymoon destinations in the world. The stunning views, romantic hotels, delicious dining.
Santorini is one of the best places in the world and is well worth the hype.
However, with beauty comes pain and it can get crowded, particularly in the hot spots for sunset. If know where to look, you can avoid some crowds. We recommend travelling outside of the peak summer travel months if you can.
How long should we stay in Santorini for our honeymoon?
The duration of a Santorini honeymoon will depend on several factors, including your available time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking to have.
Many couples only spend a few nights in Santorini, but we’d recommend at least 4-5 nights which will allow you a couple of days to relax and see some of the highlights.
7 nights is ideal to have time for both relaxing and exploring.
Remember that a 3 night Santorini honeymoon will give you two full days and 4 nights, three full days and so on.
How do we get to Santorini?
During the summer, from April to October, there are direct flights to Santorini Airport (airport code: JTR) from major European destinations.
Ryanair, EasyJet & Voltea have multiple flights from the Paris, Naples, Rome, Dublin, London and other European cities.
You can also take the ferry from nearby islands and from Athens. The fast, direct ferries takes around 5 hours during the summer months.
Santorini is one of the most southerly islands of the Cyclades, so if you’re starting in Athens, we recommend island hopping through another island like Mykonos, Sifnos or Paros.
The ferries arrive at Athinios Port on the southwest of the island, around 8kms south of Fira.
We use FerryHopper for booking ferries and we would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment in high season.
There is also the new Fly Cycladic airline, who do short shared and private charters between the Greek Islands.
During winter from November to March, no international flights arrive into Santorini International Airport and you’ll usually have to fly via Athens on mainland Greece (airport code: ATH).
There are also no fast ferries during the low season.
Do we need a visa for Greece?
EU passport holders can travel freely in Greece.
UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025.
Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa. If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.

We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor specialising in travel medicine.
How do we get around Santorini?
Santorini is very easy to get around. The bus service is cheap and efficient during the summer.
You can hire bicycles, although it is challenging terrain if you’re not in good shape. Plus, you need to beware of vehicles, including coaches and ATVs.
Do you need car hire in Santorini? Although car hire is available and we recommend booking early, it can be a challenge to find parking on the narrow roads of villages.
You could hire motorbikes if you’re an experienced rider. Although forgoing vehicle hire is also a great way to make your honeymoon more sustainable.
Taxis are available, although not cheap, compared to other destinations in Greece.
Many couples rent ATV/Quads (or you can take a guided ATV excursion). However, although are a handy way to get around, they are more prone to safety incidents.
Please err on the side of caution and check your travel insurance covers accidents on this type of vehicle!

As one of Europe’s most popular destinations, a Santorini honeymoon is certainly not the cheapest.
Particularly, compared to other parts of Greece. During the summer high season, a room with private balcony jacuzzi hot tub or a private pool with caldera views in a 5-star hotel can stretch into 4 figures per night for a couple.
In fact, high end Santorini honeymoon hotels can sometimes be comparable with an overwater villa in the Maldives.
However, there are more affordable accommodation options and also islands and other parts of Greece that you can tag on to make a Santorini honeymoon more affordable.
Santorini honeymoon package costs will vary depending on where in the world you’re travelling from and what time of year.
Should we use a travel agent to book a Santorini honeymoon?
Organising your honeymoon with a good travel agent or tour operator who books Santorini honeymoons regularly can take the hassle out of honeymoon planning and they may even have have preferential rates.
It’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent.
However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Santorini honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.
You can book all the extras easily. We book ferries with Ferry Hopper and tours and excursions with GetYourGuide or Viator.
When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change planes.
We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover, if all flights booked on one ticket, for a stress-free experience.
Give yourself plenty of time for transfers. Ferries can be delayed, too
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!
What about travel insurance?
Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.

What should we pack for a Santorini honeymoon?
One of the biggest decisions when planning a honeymoon is what to wear in Santorini!
We recommend packing plenty of swimwear and sundresses, sunglasses and chinos, light shirts, shorts and t-shirts for men.
Santorini is romantic and stylish, so pack chic and glam outfits. Join us on Pinterest for some style inspiration.
Santorini is full of hills, the beaches have pebbles and many of the streets and steps are cobblestone so we recommend being a little more practical with your footwear – leave the heels at home.
If you’re planning the hike from Fira to Oia, bring suitable hiking clothes and footwear.
Get out free Greece honeymoon packing list!
Should we bring cash / should we tip in Santorini?
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, resorts and shops in Santorini and there are ATMs on the island.
It’s a good idea to have some euro on hand for smaller purchases.
Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated. 10% for service staff is a good rule of thumb, as is rounding up other services.
What Santorini souvenirs can you buy?
From artisan jewellery and accessories to tourist tat, Santorini has many shops. You’ll find some treasures to bring home from your Santorini honeymoon.
Look out for Assyrtiko wine, books from Atlantis Bookshop in the heart of Oia, Greek made jewellery and leather goods.
What is the best Greek island to combine with Santorini?
The Cyclades islands has over 200 islands and islets, so Santorini has many beautiful spots to explore nearby!
Mykonos is perfect for party lovers, but much like Santorini, there is even more than meets the eye!
Some of the best Greek islands are nearby. Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros are just three we highly recommend you add to your list.
You could also combine with Crete. There is a direct ferry in the summer.
We’re also obsessed with Athens, one of Europe’s most underrated capital cities.
With cool boutique hotels and plenty of activities for foodies and history lovers, this historic city is worth at least a couple of days of exploration.
Where can we tag on to Santorini for a multi-destination honeymoon
As you can see, there are many islands to explore in Greece that you can easily spend your whole honeymoon here.
However, if you’d like to tick another country off your list, during summer, you can also fly to many other destinations in Europe.
Santorini combined with Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of our favourite European multi-destination honeymoon combinations.
You can add on Santorini to any Italian honeymoon itinerary of your choosing for an incredible Greece and Italy honeymoon, with direct flights to many of the best cities.
One day you can be strolling through the historic streets of Rome, admiring art in Florence or floating in a gondola in Venice and the next swimming in a cave pool in your own suite in Santorini!
A city stop in Paris or London for a city and island honeymoon would be incredible, too!
There are so many options, let your imaginations run wild if you have more time…
Things to consider before booking a Santorini honeymoon
While we love to recommend a honeymoon in Santorini, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!
- Over Tourism: Santorini is one of Greece most popular and famous island. When the large cruise ships are in port, the tiny villages are packed and the crowds dial down the romance. If you can, book a room with a view to maximise the romance.
- Cost: Santorini is undeniably an expensive destination, particularly compared to other islands in Greece, with high costs for accommodation, which might not suit your budget.
- Tourist-centric Island: Due to its popularity, much of Santorini caters heavily to tourists. This can sometimes result in a lack of authentic local experiences and interactions, as many traditional aspects of Greek life are overshadowed. Add on a lesser visited island if you can to experience the best of Greek hospitality.
- Limited Beaches: Santorini does have beaches but as we’ve mentioned they’re more unique volcanic style. If you’re seeking a tropical white sand vibe, unfortunately you won’t find them in Santorini.
