The tourist areas of Greece are quieter over winter, with fewer ferries and many hotels and restaurants closed on the islands.
From mid to late April, hotels and ferry services begin to ramp up and are fully operational throughout the summer season until autumn, when they start to wind down throughout the month of October.
The high season months are late June to August when European school holidays are in session so the prices, heat and crowds are turned all the way up.
If you can avoid travelling in the peak months of July and August, you’ll miss the heaviest crowds.
Overall, the best time to go Greek island hopping is during the shoulder seasons of late April to early June and September to early October, as the weather is warm and the crowds are more manageable.
How to get around the Greek Islands
The best way to get around on an island hop in Greece is by ferry or to fly.
There are several ferry companies like Hellenic Seaways and Seajets that operate throughout the country linking islands to each other.
While some of the main routes operate year round, many just operate during the summer season, usually from April to October.

The Greek ferry system has a bit of reputation and ferry rides are a bit of an adventure.
They can be crowded and are a little chaotic when it comes to boarding and seating arrangements. On top of this they are often late.
If there is a direct flight between your destinations, then opt for the flight. Local airlines like Aegean Airlines, Sky Express and Olympic Air have regular flights that connect to the Greek islands from Athens and major islands like Crete and Corfu.
New charter airline, Fly Cycladic, do short shared and private flight charters between the Cyclades islands, too.
It’s unusual to hire a car on most islands and some islands may even be car free. Many hotels will arrange a pick up from the port for you but you can check if a rental car is available, too.
