What to know about the weather in Greece
You’re dreaming about the enchanting coastline of Greece, anticipating the moment you step onto its storied lands. But what will the weather be like?
When you’re creating a Greece Packing List, it’s vital to consider the climate. Here’s a brief guide on what you might encounter:
Spring (March to May): Greek springs bring progressively warmer temperatures and brighter days. March can be somewhat cool, especially in northern regions, and the sea is still cold but come the month of May, the whole country generally enjoys comfortably warm conditions.
This season witnesses Greece in bloom, with rural landscapes and urban green spaces awakening. Opt for light, adaptable layers as temperatures can fluctuate.
Summer (June to August): Greek summers are known for their sizzling heat and bright sunshine, particularly in southern areas and key cities like Athens and Heraklion. Temperatures regularly climb well above 30°C (86°F).
Coastal destinations can provide cooling sea breezes that offer relief from the heat. Although, even on the islands, Greece has experienced intense heat waves and forest fires in recent times.
It’s best to wear light, airy attire and remember plenty of sun protection.
Autumn (September to November): Autumn sees a gradual cooling from the summer’s warmth. September and even into late October can remain quite warm.
As the season progresses, temperatures cool, more so in the north and mountainous regions. In October, it’s advisable to pack a light later for evenings. You may see some showers.
November gets much cooler with temperatures averaging 15°C (60°F).
Winter (December to February): Greek winters are generally mild along the coast but can get quite cold in the north, particularly in mountainous areas where snow is common.
Central and southern parts experience gentler winters, though it can still be brisk with occasional rain. Warm attire and a sturdy coat are essential for winter visits to Greece.
Overall, Greece’s climate varies from north to south and from coastal to inland areas. Keep the specific regions you’ll be visiting in mind when preparing your Greece packing list essentials.
The things you shouldn’t add to your Greece Packing List
When packing for a honeymoon in Greece, it’s just as important to know what to leave behind as it is to know what to bring.
Laundromats do exist in big towns and cities (although we don’t want you to waste a minute of your honeymoon in Greece doing laundry) so pack smart to avoid paying huge hotel laundry fees.
Here are some things to leave behind:
Warm Clothes – Leave heavy clothing off your Greece packing list if you’re travelling in summer. The warm Mediterranean climate means you won’t need thick clothing like jeans or jumpers.
High heeled shoes – The towns on Greece’s islands are cobblestoned so high heeled shoes may be impractical. You may take a taxi to a bar or restaurant but either a block heel or some chic sandals are best.
Gadgets – While your camera, e-reader, smartphone (or even your drone) might be essential items on your Greece packing list, avoid overloading your luggage with too many electronic devices.
Embrace the chance to explore and immerse yourself in the ancient culture and history of Greece.
Too many makeup products – If you’re travelling in summer, Greece is hot so heavy makeup may not last very long.
Expensive jewellery – Although you want to wear your engagement and wedding rings – make sure they’re not loose!
Leave other expensive jewellery at home to avoid any mishaps (trust us we know, having a wedding ring fall into the Aegean Sea one time – we miraculously got it back!)
Single-use plastics – In an effort to reduce your carbon footprint and make your Greece honeymoon sustainable – consider reducing the use of single-use plastics in your packing. Opt for reusable items where possible.
Now it’s time to get packed with the Ultimate Greece Packing List!
The Ultimate Greece Packing List
Essentials
EU passport holders can travel freely in Greece. UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025.
Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa. If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.
Most documents are electronic now, so make sure you have your boarding pass or e-ticket on your phone along with your transport, hotel and tour confirmations.
Some travel vaccinations are recommended for Greece. We encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor.
The currency is the Euro. Credit Cards are widely accepted in Greece but you may want some euros for smaller towns and smaller local shops.
Let your bank know you’re travelling and check if there is anything you need to do to avoid issues using your card abroad. You can get euros before you leave or take out cash at ATMs.
Tipping is not compulsory in Greece, however it is appreciated and it is the norm for tourists. Add an extra 10% to your bill and round up taxi fares.

Clothing & Accessories
Greece is a very casual kind of country and Greece is a very hot country! So mix practicality with style.
On the Greek islands (almost) anything goes, but if you’re entering churches be respectful and dress a little more modestly, covering shoulders for example.
What clothes to bring will depend on what time of year you’re travelling and what activities you plan on doing, too. But don’t worry, our Greece packing list has you covered for every eventuality.
If you’re packing for a relaxing all-inclusive Greek beach honeymoon, then you’ll need lots of swimwear, dresses and playsuits for her and for him plenty of swimwear, shorts and t-shirts and maybe something dressier like linen trousers for romantic evenings.
We mentioned that you should leave the heels at home, but flip flops / thongs or sliders are ideal and add some comfy yet stylish sandals or sneakers or tennis shoes to your Greece packing list.
If you’re island hopping and dragging suitcases on ferries, hiking mountains, sightseeing then you may want to add some practical footwear to your Greece packing list.
Sneakers should do the job for the most common excursions so there is probably no need to pack full hiking boots. Your most comfortable shoes should be fine for most scenarios.
If you’re planning insta-worth days and romantic evenings in Santorini or dancing in the sun in beach clubs in Mykonos, pack some lightweight glam.
Don’t forget a sun hat and a chic beach bag (we love this monogrammed one). The Mediterranean sun is hot so consider covering up with a rashguard during the day.
We love our Dock and Bay quick-dry towels which are compact and come in an array of cute striped colours, ideal for that honeymoon insta moment.
Sunglasses are an essential addition to your Greece packing list.
Athens has some great shops and the more popular islands like Mykonos, Santorini & Crete have little boutiques, too, so when thinking about your Greece packing list, think about whether you’ll pick up anything locally.
A light rain jacket is a good idea if travelling from late Autumn to early Spring. We love our waterproof jacket from Danish brand rains. Greek winters are mild so if you happen to be travelling in low season, pack some warm clothing including hats and scarves.
A practical day backpack or cross body bag is essential to fit in all your essentials when you’re out exploring. While Athens is a safe place to travel, like all big cities it can have a problem with pickpockets so make sure your bag is secure.
Pack some comfy clothes for the plane — athleisure wear, sneakers, scarves, socks.
If you’re fitness lovers you may want to add gym gear to your Greece packing list. Skip the hotel gym and opt for poolside yoga sessions or just pack your running shoes for jogs along the beach.

Personal Care
Personal care is just that, personal! So take what you need from this section to add to your Greece packing list.
For example, you may love your own hair dryer, but if you’re staying in a half decent hotel they will have one, so there may not be a need to bring your own. If you do, remember that you might need a power converter if you’re coming from a destination with low voltage like the USA.
One of the most important things to add to your Greece packing list is sea friendly sunscreen. Sun Bum is our top pick.
If you haven’t got a hanging toiletries travel bag, then now is the time. These super convenient bags just hang on the back of the bathroom door. We can’t live without ours.

Healthcare
Healthcare is another personal aspect of packing for Greece, so add what you need.
It’s essential to have travel insurance in place when you’re travelling. We don’t want to sound gloomy, but you need cover in case you fall seriously ill.
If you don’t have travel insurance, check out World Nomads to learn more.
World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.
Mosquitoes hang around in summer, even in cities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned of an increasing risk of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe.
If you’re prone to mosquito bites, some anti mosquito protection such as Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil, a Bite Pen, and insect repellent bracelets is a good idea.
It’s unlikely you’ll fall ill from food borne diseases in Greece but when travelling, a change of food and water can cause an upset stomach so some medication on your Greece packing list can be a good idea.
There are pharmacies on all islands and many speak English but in an ideal world you may just want to have medication close by.
Seasickness on ferries is a common problem as seas can be rough in the Aegean, so
Dramamine or similar, is useful to have.
- Contraception / Birth Control

- Bandaids
- Pain relief – aspirin/paracetamol

Electronics
Greece uses EU standard plug type C so a universal travel plug adapter is an essential addition to your Greece packing list. This one with handy USB connections is ideal.
Many couples just use their smartphone for photography but Greece is one of the most photogenic honeymoon destinations in the world so if you have a camera, bring it. We have the Sony ZV1.
A waterproof phone cover will be a good addition to your Greece packing list, too.
Selfie sticks may feel a little silly but we still think it’s the best way to get that perfect sunset insta image without getting other people involved. If you want to feel less conspicuous opt for a Gorilla Pod instead.
Thinking about bringing a drone and living your best influencer life? For beginners, consider investing in a DJI Mini.
Add your Apple AirPods or your favourite headphones to your Greece packing list.
Physical books are our favourite so bring at least one must-read for days when you’re by the beach, or your private pool. However, if you’re voracious readers like us, then load up your Kindle with all the books you’ve been meaning to read.
If you have a lot of cables, then consider our favourite chic travel case to keep them tidy.

Miscellaneous
All the other things you may or may not need!
Should you bring a suitcase or a backpack to Greece? If you’re planning a more luxurious trip with car transfers, then a suitcase is absolutely fine.
If you’re planning a more backpacking style trip using lots of ferries then a backpack might be better. However, in our experience if you’re just hopping on and off one or two ferries, suitcases are fine.
It’s down to personal choice.
We love our hard shell luggage from suitcase legends, Samsonite. Don’t forget an Apple AirTag, the best luggage tracker to add to your Greece packing list (in case the worst happens!).
If you’re planning a multi stop Greek island hopping honeymoon, you’re moving around so you’ll want to stay organised. This is where packing cubes come in1
They are great if you want to compartmentalise and save you from having to unpack everything every time you get to a new island. Don’t forget TSA approved locks for your luggage.
A dry bag is a must if you’re taking boat trips and intending to have fun by the beach or pool.
If you’re going snorkelling or scuba diving, then tour providers will have all the necessary gear, so there is no need to bring your own (except for hygiene reasons of course).

Sustainable Greece packing list tips
To make your Greek honeymoon more sustainable – consider reducing the number of single-use plastics in your Greece packing list.
Tap water is generally safe to drink in Greece and bottled water is available everywhere. If you’re concerned about the tap water, it means using a lot of plastic bottles.
If you’re concerned about water quality a water filtration and purification travel bottle like Grayl is a must buy.
