Best time to visit Crete for Honeymoon
The island of Crete has a Mediterranean climate, with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters.
The best time to visit Crete for a honeymoon is from late April to June and September to mid October, when the weather is pleasant and there are fewer crowds.
Late June to August is the peak tourist season. The weather is hot and sunny, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 30°C (86°F) although in recent years the mercury has trended upwards with intense heat waves.
In July and August, the beaches are crowded, and the popular tourist attractions are busy.
March to April and October are shoulder season months. The weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller. The average temperatures range from 18°C (65°F) to 25°C (77°F).
Spring is especially beautiful with blooming flowers and greenery. If you prefer a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere with pleasant weather, then this is the best time to visit Crete, although bear in mind that the sea can be colder in March and early April.
Crete can also be more windy than other Greek islands as it’s a more mountainous island.
Cretan winters are mild and rainy. The average temperatures range from 10°C (50°F). Winter is a great time to experience the island’s local culture and traditions, but many resort hotels, restaurants and tourist shops will be shut.

Where to stay in Crete
One of the toughest decisions when planning a Crete honeymoon is which part of the island to stay on!
Crete is a large island and because of its rugged mountainous nature, it can take around 5 hours to drive from the northwest to the northeast. There are many different areas to stay in, although most couples stay on the northern coast.
The capital is Heraklion (pop. 150,000) is in the north of the island. Though not as pretty as Crete’s other seaside towns or other port cities in the Mediterranean, it’s certainly worth staying nearby on your Crete honeymoon, with must-see sites including the legendary Knossos Palace.
In western Crete, Chania is a romantic town in the northwest of the island (and home to its 2nd airport) with a beautiful 14th-century old Venetian Quarter centred around the port and a 16th-century lighthouse.
Its narrow streets are filled with tavernas, cafes, boutiques, and museums. Chania is a perfect base for day trips to Samaria Gorge, Elafonisi Beach, or Balos Beach.
Rethymno is almost halfway between Heraklion and China (with a similar atmosphere to Chania). Its mostly pedestrianised Old Town extends from the Venetian harbour and fortress.
To the east of Heraklion, Hersonissos is a nearby lively resort town. This is a less romantic vibe but there are plenty of hotels to suit different budgets.
Further along, Agios Nikolaos, is a picturesque seafront town centred around Lake Voulismeni, which was once a freshwater lake and is now connected to the sea by a small canal.
Elounda is a former fishing village about a half an hour south, with some of the best honeymoon hotels in Crete. There are beaches like Voulisma. You can take day trips to Vai Beach on the far east coast and the 16th-century Spinalonga island fortress.
Along the south coast, there are smaller seaside towns with more local style accommodation options, although around Ierapetra has seen a couple of luxury spots open up.
There is no wrong place to stay on a Crete honeymoon and both the east coast and west coast have their own highlights, whether it’s beaches or historical sites.
If you have more time, we’d highly recommend spending a few days on each side.

Things to do in Crete on honeymoon
One of the best things about a Crete honeymoon is experiencing its diverse landscapes. From the rugged mountains and gorges to the stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, and historic sites, there is so much to explore on this island.
Tip: When booking tours, ensure that the tours you book offer pickup services from your specific location in Crete!
Beach Days
One of the quintessential things to do on a Crete honeymoon is to bask in the glory of its beautiful beaches, some of the best in Greece.
Although Crete’s coastline is very rugged, it has some stunning coves.
With crystal Caribbean-like turquoise waters of Balos Lagoon and soft white sand, Balos Beach is one of the most photographed spots in Crete. You can drive through a track road from Kissamos and hike, but most couples take a day trip by boat and visit adjacent Gramvousa island.
At Elafonisi Beach, you’ll find another of Crete’s best beaches, with (sometimes) pink-hued sand (it depends on the season) yet beautiful at any time of year. You can easily take a boat trip from Chania.
These beaches are one of the reasons we recommend a west coast stay.
If you’re staying on the east coast, don’t worry, there are lovely spots there too, like Vai Beach, with its lush palm forest which is the only native palm trees in Europe and is designated a national park.
Bear in mind that the most popular beaches can be extremely busy during high season so arrive early if you can.

Archaeology & Architecture
Delving into the rich history of the island is another of the top things to do on a Crete honeymoon. From ancient ruins, to museums and architecture, Crete is a history lovers’ haven.
The Palace of Knossos is an ancient ruin and one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete. It was the centre of the Minoan civilization from around 1900 BC, which was one of the most advanced of its time. The throne room is regarded as one of the oldest rooms in Europe.
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is our top pick for things to do on a Crete honeymoon for history lovers. It houses a collection of artefacts from ancient peoples that inhabited the island.
Stroll through the old Venetian harbour of Chania and the seaside town of Rethymno where you’ll find Byzantine, Ottoman, Arabic, and Venetian landmarks and architecture.

Foodie Tours
Crete is a foodie’s island and is full of authentic experiences. Think olive trees and lemon trees, wildflowers for foraging, cheeses and viticulture. Simple Greek produce is the name of the game!
Learn about the production on an olive oil tour (and bring some bottles home). Explore Cretan vineyards. The island has a long tradition of winemaking. We’ve taken this tour.
Would it be a Greek foodie honeymoon without a cooking class or a street food tour? One of the most famous local specialties is the Dakos salad, which is made from barley rusk, fresh tomato, feta cheese, and olive oil.
How about meeting local goat herders and beekeepers or truffle hunting and learning about Crete’s drink, Raki?
If you’re staying on the west coast, stop by traditional villages like Plaka. You’ll find the best seafood and beautiful views.
Kritsa is known for its olive oil, which you can buy along with local products including herbs, honey and nearby Kroustas. You can try authentic myzithropita, a type of Greek cheesecake.
Water Sports
Whatever your jam is, there are plenty of things to do on a Crete honeymoon for water sports lovers.
The island’s eastern beaches are perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing. From jet skiing to parasailing and standup paddle boarding, there are options for every level of thrill-seeker.
You can go snorkelling, and scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island

Adventure Activities
Exploring the diverse landscapes is one of the most fun things to do on a Crete honeymoon. You’ll find plenty of adventure on the island.
Go horseback riding through olive groves and along the coastline or mountain paths. You’ll get to see some of Crete’s most beautiful landscapes from a unique perspective.
For couples who love who thrills you can go quad biking, mountain biking, abseiling, parasailing and even paratriking, too. Plus, hot-air balloon rides over the mountain scenery.
Hiking
The best thing about Crete is that it’s a hiker’s paradise, and trekking through the wild landscapes is one of our top picks for things to do on a Crete honeymoon.
The UNESCO-listed Samaria Gorge has 16km of beautiful rock scenery and it’s one of the must-dos tours of Crete. It is home to a rare wild goat species, the Kri Kri. You’ll finish in the village of Agia Roumeli, where you can cool off with a dip in the Libyan Sea (so pack a swimsuit!).
The Kourtaliotiko Gorge is another rugged natural beauty in the south of the island, with steep cliffs. Connected to Preveli Beach is a series of springs and waterfalls. It’s a lovely day trip to southern Crete.
The Katharo Plateau has the most stunning Dikti mountains scenery, and you’ll meet sheep and wild goats along the way. You can visit Sarakina Gorge and swim in the Libyan Sea at Myrtos Beach on the southern coast on this day tour.
Don’t miss Richtis Gorge where you can hike through the forest to Richtis Waterfall and have a swim in the waterfall pool and then hike on to the pebbly Richtis beach.
You can also visit Psychro Cave, which is filled with stalagmites and stalactites and was believed to be the birthplace of Zeus.
Crete truly has an abundance of terrains and tracks to offer.

Island Visits
This is Greece, so there are many islands to explore and visiting the smaller islands dotted around the Crete coastline is one of the most romantic things to do on a Crete honeymoon.
Uninhabited Dia Island, with its unspoiled beauty, was said to be formed by Zeus and is an easy day trip from Heraklion.
If you’re staying on the west coast, Spinalonga Island, with its Venetian fortress and poignant leper history, is a must. Cruise in Mirabello Bay and swim in the clear waters of Kolokitha Bay and learn all about this ancient island.
If you’re staying around Ierapetra, Chrissi Island (or Chrysi / Chrisi), a natural paradise, is ideal for couples seeking tranquillity. Chrissi translates as golden and is a lovely laid back day trip.
Haven’t got time to visit the Cyclades Islands? Then you can take a day trip to Santorini. It’s a long day and while it’s just a peek at the island, it’s ideal if you haven’t got time to stay on Santorini.

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean (after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus and Corsica), is a fascinating blend of ancient history and modern appeal.
Known as the cradle of the Minoan, regarded as Europe’s first advanced civilization, they lived from around 2700 to 1420 BC. Some of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, like Knossos, are on Crete.
Since then, Crete has been under Byzantine, Ottoman, Arabic, and Venetian rule, which is evident in its architecture.
In contrast, contemporary Crete thrives with vibrant urban and rural life. The island’s geography varies from rugged mountains to long stretches of sandy beaches and a thriving food scene.
This is the Greek islands, life moves at a slower pace in the best possible way.

Crete Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions
Is Crete good for a honeymoon?
Absolutely, a Crete honeymoon is a wonderful choice.
There is so much to do, beautiful Crete honeymoon hotels, some of the best beaches in Greece, lots of authentic Cretan culture and history, and it’s very affordable compared to some other Greek islands.
It’s one of the best Greek Islands for honeymoon!
How long should we stay in Crete for our honeymoon?
The duration of a Crete honeymoon will depend on several factors, including your available time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking to have.
If you are island hopping in Greece, we’d recommend at least 5 nights to experience some of the highlights of Crete as the island is so big.
However, many couples opt to spend their whole honeymoon in Crete, too! You could easily spend 7-10 nights.
Remember that a 5-night Crete honeymoon will give you four full days and 3 nights, two full days, and so on.
How do we get to Crete?
Crete receives hundreds of daily flights from other destinations in Europe and Greece during summer.
In winter, there are about 20 flights per day, mostly from Athens with Aegean Airlines, Sky Express, and Olympic Air.
Most international flights land at either Heraklion (airport code: HER), the capital in the north of the island, or the city of Chania (CHQ) in the northwest.
There is also a smaller airport, Sitia Airport (JSH) in the east, that gets less frequent domestic flights from Athens.
When you’re deciding on a Crete honeymoon, remember the island is big, so choose the airport closest to your hotel or resort (or choose a hotel or resort closest to the most convenient airport!).
Crete has a few ports but most ferries depart from Heraklion port and you can get to and from the Cyclades Islands in 3-5 hours.
Ferries from Piraeus Port of Athens take around 8-10 hours, so we’d recommend taking the one hour flight instead of an all-day or overnight ferry.
When you arrive, you can easily take a private transfer or pick up a car.
Do we need a visa for Greece?
EU passport holders can travel freely in Greece.
UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025.
Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa. If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.
Do we need travel vaccinations for Greece?
Greece is a malaria-free and a Zika free honeymoon destination.
Some travel vaccinations may be needed.
We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor specialising in travel medicine.
How do we get around Crete?
We’ve mentioned Crete is huge, so if you want to explore, car rental can be a good idea. We book with RentalCars.com.
If you choose car hire, bear in mind that the driving culture may be different from at home. Greek drivers are assertive.
While there are paved roads in good condition in some places, most of the island is mountainous with narrow and winding roads (albeit scenic), so only drive if you are confident and take care.
If you’re planning on visiting the popular tourist spots, such as Elafonisi Beach or Samaria Gorge, go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
However, you don’t have to drive. Many couples base themselves in a beautiful Crete honeymoon resort and take excursions instead.
Or, you can book a private driver, too.
Is a Crete honeymoon expensive?
A Crete honeymoon can be affordable or lavish.
As it’s a big island, there is a wide range of Crete honeymoon hotels, from five-star luxury to more quaint budget options.
You’ll find something for every budget when it comes to eating in Crete, too.
Should we use a travel agent to book a Crete honeymoon?
A great tour operator or a reputable travel agent who specialises in Greece and books Crete honeymoons regularly can take care of all the nitty-gritty details and may even have preferential rates.
However, if you want to book a D-I-Y Crete honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com.
We book ferries with Ferry Hopper and tours and excursions with GetYourGuide or Viator.
When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change aeroplanes.
We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience.
Give yourself plenty of time for transfers. Ferries can be delayed, too.
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!
What about travel insurance?
Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible.
Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.
If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.
World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.
What should we pack for a Crete honeymoon?
One of the biggest decisions when planning a honeymoon is what to wear!
We recommend packing plenty of swimwear and sundresses, sunglasses and chinos, light shirts, shorts and t-shirts for men.
Crete is laid back but you may want chic outfits for romantic evenings.
We have our free Greece packing list that can help organise your Crete honeymoon suitcase!
Should we bring cash / should we tip in Crete?
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, resorts, and shops in Crete and there are ATMs on the island.
It’s a good idea to have some euro on hand for smaller purchases.
Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated. 10% for service staff is a good rule of thumb, as is rounding up taxi bills.
What is the best Greek island to combine with Crete?
The Cyclades islands are an ideal add-on to your itinerary during the summer months, lying to the north of Crete.
Santorini is iconic with its cliff-side honeymoon hotels and hikes, boat trips, and vineyards. This is one of our favourite Greek island combinations.
You could also add on Mykonos, which has some beautiful places to stay, plus great nightlife too.
How about Naxos and Paros? So many islands, so little time!
Don’t skip Athens either — the city is perfect for culture, history, and food lovers!
Where can we tag on to Crete for a multi-destination honeymoon?
As you can see, there are many islands to explore in Greece that you can easily spend your whole honeymoon here.
However, if you’d like to tick another country off your list, during summer, you can also fly from and to many other destinations in Europe from Crete.
How about an Italian honeymoon itinerary combined with Crete, the stunningly beautiful Amalfi Coast or city stopover exploring the canals of Venice, the cobblestone streets of Rome or the iconic art of Florence?
A city stopover in Barcelona, Paris, or London for a city and island honeymoon would be stunning, too! The options are truly endless, so let your imagination run wild!

Things to consider before booking a Crete honeymoon
While we love to recommend a honeymoon in Crete, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!
- Crowds: Crete is a very popular destination, especially during the summer months (June to August) and major tourist spots including the best beaches can be crowded.
- Wind: Crete can be quite windy, especially around the northern coast. This can sometimes make beach days less pleasant and may disrupt ferry schedules.
