“We’d love to stay in one of those villas on stilts”. Over the years, this has been one of the most common honeymoon aspirations we hear. You may seek something special to celebrate getting married and the overwater bungalows / overwater villas is one of those experiences that is at the top of most honeymoon bucket lists.

The Maldives is the most famous honeymoon destination with these heavenly room categories. You’ll find them in the vast majority of the 150+ resorts there. French Polynesia is one of the ultimate honeymoon paradises and the overwater bungalow originally started here in the 1960s – almost by accident. Conde Nast Traveler has a fascinating article about the history of overwater bungalows in Tahiti which you can read about here.

We’re obsessed with the overwater villas in the Maldives and French Polynesia (check out our Ultimate Maldives Honeymoon Guide and our Ultimate French Polynesia Honeymoon Guide). There are legendary resorts with overwater villas like Conrad Maldives Rangali island and Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. But where else can you go for these overwater villas experience? For many years, these two heavenly island nations were the only destinations you could have this unique hotel experience, but thankfully the concept has spread in different forms across the continents from Asia to Europe to the Caribbean. You might wonder, are overwater villas worth it? What countries have overwater villas? Where are the best overwater villas?

There is no doubt these unique overwater villas around the world come with a price tag. If you’re finding booking one of these overwater villas and wondering if the honeymoon budget can stretch, remember you could split your stay. Book a few nights in a standard room category and then spend a few nights in the overwater villas category. So let us take you to the best overwater villas (not in the Maldives or French Polynesia).

Northeast of Singapore, across 6 pristine islands, you’ll find the most heavenly, off-the-beaten-track private island suites, lodges and villas. This is where sustainability is part of the DNA and everything from the building of the resort to the marine and island protection is of the utmost importance.

Where the azure lagoon meets powdery white sand and lush rainforest, you’ll find overwater villas. The interiors of aqua green and bamboo wood are serene. Enjoy a cocktail from your bar while enjoying personalised culinary delights. Snorkel and scuba dive amongst rare coral reefs in a marine conservation area. You may even experience some turtles hatching. Take a romantic private picnic on a secluded beach. We’re kind of obsessed with Jamaica. This unique Caribbean island has so much going on and is ideal for an island honeymoon and Sandals Resorts has TWO beautiful options for overwater villas.

With lots of restaurants and bars to choose from, plus room service and butler service included – these resorts are perfect for a romantic getaway to enjoy your newly wedded bliss.
