About
Mauritius is one of the best honeymoon destinations in the Indian Ocean. Often couples are struggling to choose between Mauritius or Seychelles or Maldives (so we’ve broken down the differences between them on this blog if you’re confused too!).
Mauritius is 1100kms off the coast of Madagascar, off the east coast of Africa. It was, at various times, a colony of the Netherlands, France and Great Britain and, like many former colonies, it has a tragic history of slavery and indentured labour. These days it’s a proud nation with most of the population of Indian heritage with a mix of Creole, Chinese and French, making it a culturally diverse place to visit.

When to go
Mauritius is a tropical destination. Depending on how hot you like your temperatures, you can visit year-round. The country experiences a ‘wet’ and ‘dry’ season. The wettest months are from January to March when you can expect occasional short downpours but plenty of sunshine too. However, during the wet season, occasional cyclones can occur. During the southern hemisphere winter, from June to September, the temperatures can be cooler (average temperature 20°C / 70°F). The best time to visit Mauritius for a honeymoon is from April to May or from September to November.
How to get there
You can fly to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius (Airport code: MRU) via the Middle East, including the UAE (with Emirates via Dubai – 6 hours) or Turkey (via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines – 9.5 hours). You can also fly from London with British Airways (12 hours) and Air Mauritius and Air France from Paris (11 hours) There are also flights from Nairobi in Kenya with Kenya Airways (4 hours), Johannesburg in South Africa with Air Mauritius or South African Airways (4 hours), Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, (7 hours), Perth in Australia (8 hours) and Madagascar (2 hours) with Air Mauritius.

Where to stay
The Mauritius coastline is lined with hotels and resorts on dazzling beachfronts. We’ve a bigger list of the best resorts in Mauritius for honeymoon here, including guide prices. Whether you want an intimate boutique hotel, a local bolthole or a large resort, there is a honeymoon hotel for every taste. You won’t find overwater villas similar to the Maldives (the closest you’ll find is Constance Prince Maurice’s Junior Suites on Stilts) but you will find an array of stunning villas and suites.
We love the west coast for incredible sunsets. Grand Baie (sometimes Grand Bay) in the northwest is ideal if you want to be close to restaurants and boutiques. We love Hôtel 20 Degrés Sud – Relais & Châteaux. A little further south of Grand Baie is the sleepier and beautiful Trou aux Biches & Baie Aux Tortues aka Turtle Bay – we love The Oberoi Beach Resort. Flic en Flac in the west is one of the best diving spots – we love Maradiva Villas Resort & Spa.
We also love Le Morne, the location of one of the most iconic images of Mauritius, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Brabant Mountain and its ‘underwater waterfall’ which you can see on a helicopter tour- we love LUX* Le Morne
Don’t discount the east coast’s Belle Mare area, where many of the most luxurious honeymoon hotels in Mauritius are located – we love Constance Belle Mare Plage. However, if you’re travelling during the winter, in July and August, it can be a little windier on this side of the island. So if you travel during these months, consider staying on the west coast.
A little further south, closer to the airport, is Blue Bay. Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas is a gorgeous option here, set back from an untouched, wild beach for those who want to get back to nature.
As Mauritius is also a high-end family-friendly destination, perfect for a familymoon! So, not all hotels are adults-only. However, even resorts that welcome families will usually have some areas set aside for adults only such as adults-only pools and bars – just check before you book.

How to get around
You can drive from the north to the south of Mauritius in just over an hour. However, most couples will stay on the coasts and base themselves at the resort and take excursions. If you want more freedom to do it yourself, Mauritius is not a hard place to drive, so you could hire a car. Mauritians drive on the left.
Dining & Nightlife
Because many holidays/vacations and honeymoons in Mauritius are resort-based, the nightlife in Mauritius is relatively low key. Couples will dine at their resort often, particularly if doing an all-inclusive package. The biggest congregation of restaurants and bars is around Grand Baie. So if you want to explore by night, we’d recommend staying around the north of the island.
The most popular bar is Banana Beach Club and we also love The Beach House Restaurant & Beach Bar. For fine dining French Creole-style try La Table du Chateau.
The food in Mauritius is wonderful because of diverse peoples that have settled there, Chinese, Indian, French and African. Foodies will love the array of global dishes available. Indian cooking heavily influences the local cuisine with delicious curries (although they’re not as spicy, they’re packed with flavour!). Being an island, it goes without saying that the seafood is outstanding. You’ll find an exquisite array of tropical fruits – particularly in cocktails! We often think about the Mango & Lychee Bellinis and Hibiscus Mojitos at The Oberoi Beach Resort…
While many hotels offer all-inclusive as standard, some will only offer bed & breakfast, half board (B&D) or full board (B, L&D) particularly at the ultra-luxury end (you pay for drinks and other meals either as you go or on the bill at the end of your stay).
**B = Breakfast L= Lunch D = Dinner
