Best time to visit Mauritius for Honeymoon
Mauritius is a tropical destination. Depending on how warm you like things, you can visit year-round. The country experiences a ‘rainy’ and ‘dry’ season.
The wettest months are from January to March when you can expect occasional short downpours but plenty of sunshine too. However, during the wet season, occasional cyclones can occur.
During the southern hemisphere winter, from June to September, the temperatures can be cooler (average temperature 20°C / 70°F) so ideal for couples who don’t like hot weather or humidity but love the idea of a tropical beach honeymoon.
The best time to visit Mauritius for a honeymoon is from April to May and from September to November.

Where to stay in Mauritius
Lined with beautiful hotels and resorts along the dazzling beachfronts, Mauritius has a honeymoon hotel for every taste. Whether you want an intimate boutique bolthole, mountain retreat or an ultra luxury resort, you’ll find it in Mauritius.
Base yourself in one resort, and take day trips. Mauritius is a tiny island, so you don’t need to move around too much.
We love the west coast for incredible sunsets, yet the east coast has some of the most luxurious resorts in Mauritius.
Grand Baie is the heart of Mauritius’ laid back nightlife and this is a pleasant spot to stay near if you don’t want to be confined to your resort and ideal if you want to be close to restaurants and boutiques.
Trou aux Biches (Turtle Bay) is a little further south.
Flic en Flac is one of the longest beaches in Mauritius, it’s a favourite for sunsets with great scuba diving.
Le Morne is the location of one of the most iconic images of Mauritius, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Brabant Mountain and its ‘underwater waterfall’ which you can see on a helicopter tour.
Bel Ombre in the south is more secluded. Black Gorges River National Park and Chamarel are nearby these areas, too.
You won’t find overwater villas similar to the Maldives (the closest you’ll find is the Junior Suites on Stilts at Constance Prince Maurice) but you will find an array of stunning villas and suites.
Belle Mare has long, stunning beaches and luxury resorts on the east coas. Île aux Cerfs is a picture-perfect island off the east coast of Trou d’Eau Douce, a little further south.
However, if you’re travelling during the winter, in July and August, it can be a little windier on this side of the island. So if you travel during these months, consider staying on the west coast.
Mauritius is also a high-end family-friendly destination, perfect for a familymoon! So, not all hotels are adults-only. However, even resorts that welcome families will usually have some areas set aside for adults only such as adults-only pools and bars – just check before you book.
Where to eat in Mauritius
Because many honeymoons in Mauritius are resort-based, the nightlife in Mauritius is relatively low key. Couples will dine at their resort often, particularly if doing an all-inclusive package.
The biggest congregation of restaurants and bars is around Grand Baie. So if you want to explore by night, we’d recommend staying around the north of the island.
The most popular bar is Banana Beach Club and we also love The Beach House Restaurant & Beach Bar. For fine dining French Creole-style try La Table du Chateau.
The food in Mauritius is delicious because of diverse peoples that have settled there, Chinese, Indian, French and African. Foodies will love the array of global dishes available.
Indian cooking heavily influences the local cuisine with delicious curries (although they’re not as spicy as you might find in India).
Being an island, it goes without saying that the seafood is outstanding. You’ll also find an exquisite array of tropical fruits – particularly in cocktails! We often think about the Mango & Lychee Bellinis and Hibiscus Mojitos we had at The Oberoi Beach Resort…
While many hotels offer all-inclusive as standard, some will only offer bed & breakfast, half board (B&D) or full board (B, L&D) particularly at the ultra-luxury end (you pay for drinks and other meals either as you go or on the bill at the end of your stay).
**B = Breakfast L= Lunch D = Dinner
Things to do on a Mauritius honeymoon
You can spend a Mauritius honeymoon doing absolutely nothing except enjoying your newly wedded bliss on a idyllic beach, but scratch the surface even a little and you’ll find fun activities in this beach honeymoon paradise.

- Stay a night in a Bubble room on a private island at Bubble Lodge Ile aux Cerfs Island.
- Tour of the Northern Isles – visit Flat Island, and Gabriel Island and marvel at the underwater life at Coin de Mire.
- Visit lesser explored beaches in south Mauritius on a quad bike.

With palms swaying gently to the rhythm of the ocean and serene beaches with a dose of adventure, Mauritius is one of the best tropical honeymoon destinations in the Indian Ocean.
Mauritius Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mauritius good for a honeymoon?
Yes, Mauritius is a laid back tropical paradise with stunning beaches, beautiful hotels and scenery and more to do than first meet the eye! You’ll find a dose of adventure, too.
Which is better for a honeymoon – Mauritius or Maldives or Seychelles?
Don’t make us choose! We love all three, and while they have glorious beaches in common, they’re actually quite different from each other.
Maldives is a more castaway experience where the concept is one island:one resort. Seychelles has more of an island-hopping vibe.
They also have different weather patterns. Mauritius is best in early summer and autumn, Maldives is best in winter/spring and Seychelles is best in summer.
Find out all you need to know in our article about the differences between them.
Is Mauritius safe for LGBTQ+ couples?
Crime levels are relatively low in Mauritius, although petty crime can occur, so normal travel safety precautions are recommended.
Mauritius is a relatively conservative country and same-sex sexual activity was just decriminalised in 2023. Local attitudes may vary, as it sadly does the world over, so discretion is recommended.
Hotels do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ couples when extending complimentary honeymoon amenities (where applicable) and many LGBTQ+ couples travel to Mauritius on their honeymoon.
How long should we stay in Mauritius for our honeymoon?
The duration of a Mauritius honeymoon will depend on several factors, including your available time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking to have.
Because of its remote location in the Indian Ocean, we’d recommend at least 7 nights for a Mauritius honeymoon.
This will give you enough time to relax and explore the island.
Some couples will just 5 nights if tagging Mauritius on to a safari honeymoon and some couples will choose to stay 10 or 14 nights.
When planning your Mauritius honeymoon itinerary, remember that 2 nights will only give you 1 full day to explore/relax, 3 nights = 2 full days, 4 nights = 3 full days, 7 nights = 6 full days and so on.
How do we get to Mauritius?
You can fly to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius (Airport code: MRU) via the Middle East, including the UAE (with Emirates via Dubai – 6 hours) or Turkey (via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines – 9.5 hours).
You can also fly from London with British Airways (12 hours) and Air Mauritius and Air France from Paris (11 hours).
There are also flights from Nairobi in Kenya with Kenya Airways (4 hours), Johannesburg in South Africa with Air Mauritius or South African Airways (4 hours), Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, (7 hours), Perth in Australia (8 hours) and Madagascar (2 hours) with Air Mauritius.
Do we need a visa for Mauritius?
Most nationalities do not need to get a visa for Mauritius. You will need 6 months of validity left on your passport.
If you need help to obtain a visa, check out iVisa.com.
Do we need travel vaccinations for Mauritius?
Mauritius is a malaria-free and zika-free honeymoon destination.
Some travel vaccinations are recommended. We encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a Tropical Medicine Specialist.
How do we get around Mauritius?
Mauritius is a relatively small island and you can drive from the north to the south of Mauritius in just over an hour.
Most couples will stay on the coasts and base themselves at the resort and take excursions.
You can also hire a driver for the day, which is our favourite option, as you can tailor-make your own itinerary with the comfort of a driver. Book a 5-star rated driver.
If you want more freedom to do it yourself, Mauritius is not a difficult place to drive, so you can 100% hire a car. Mauritians drive on the left.
Is a Mauritius honeymoon package expensive?
Mauritius’ honeymoon package costs will vary depending on where in the world you’re travelling from and what time of year.
The cheapest time for hotels is during the rainy season although prices will increase at Christmas and Easter.
If you book early and consider travelling during the shoulder or low season you can make significant savings.
Mauritius is not the cheapest honeymoon destination, but compared to it’s Indian Ocean neighbours, it is one of the more affordable honeymoon destinations in the region, with a wide range of honeymoon hotels to choose from!
Should we use a travel agent to book a Mauritius honeymoon?
A good travel agent who books Mauritius regularly will usually have a direct relationship with resorts in the country. This means they may have preferential rates, so it’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent.
Using a travel agent has many advantages!
However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Mauritius honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.
You can book a transfer easily with GetYourGuide along with tours and excursions.
When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change planes.
We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover if everything booked on one ticket, for a stress-free experience.
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!
What about travel insurance?
Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.
If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.
World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.
What should we pack for a Mauritius honeymoon?
Mauritius is laid back and has a tropical climate, so you opt for relatively comfortable clothes, like shorts and t-shirts most of the time.
Go glam in luxury resorts by night with chic and cute summer dresses, jumpsuits and playsuits and chinos for men.
Add plenty of swimwear to your Mauritius packing list! Don’t forget practical hiking footwear and clothing, too.
Also include reef-friendly sunscreen, insect repellent, rash guards, reef / water shoes and waterproof phone cases.
Should we bring cash / should we tip in the Mauritius?
Most tourist businesses accept cards. However, we would recommend taking some Mauritian Rupees out at the airport for incidentals.
You will find ATMs across the island. Tipping is at your discretion. However, we would recommend 10% unless there is a service charge.
What Mauritius souvenirs should we buy?
Mauritius is not an international shopping mecca, which is one of its charms! If you want big boutiques with international brands, stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
However, you can pick up some lovely locally made goods, including rum, tea and pineapple jam.
Where can we tag on to Mauritius for a multi-destination honeymoon?
If you’re planning a romantic road trip / safari honeymoon in stunning South Africa, then Mauritius is an ideal beach add-on.
There is a direct flight to Mauritius from Johannesburg
A South Africa & Mauritius honeymoon is a quintessential African honeymoon adventure and one of our favourite honeymoon combinations!
Want to explore the wildlife of East Africa? There is a direct flight from Nairobi in Kenya creating another option for a dream safari & beach honeymoon. Or, opt for a safari adventure in Tanzania.
Find out more about choosing between Kenya or Tanzania.
You can also visit the French overseas department (and lesser-known to English-speaking natives), Réunion Island.
You can also stopover in London or Istanbul. We love Mauritius & Paris for a WOW city and beach honeymoon.
A quintessential city and beach honeymoon option is Mauritius with Dubai – check out our guide to a Dubai honeymoon to get planning.
Things to consider before booking your honeymoon in Mauritius
While we love to recommend Mauritius for honeymoon, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!
- Weather Vulnerability: Mauritius cyclone season from January to March can occasionally lead to regular heavy rains which can spoil your honeymoon. Conversely, in winter the temperatures may feel too cool if you live in a hotter climate.
- Distance: Depending on where you are in the world, Mauritius may be further away and if you only have a short time for your honeymoon, it may not be worth travelling so far away. You don’t want to have to deal with jet lag for your whole honeymoon!
- Accommodation: Mauritius has some stunning hotels and resorts, but most lack the wow factor of the overwater villas of somewhere like the Maldives and private island hillside villas of Seychelles.
