Best time to visit Seychelles

Seychelles has a tropical climate, meaning it’s warm all year round, but it also has a rainy season. Monsoon and the trade winds will affect rain patterns.

The best time to visit Seychelles is during the summer months, from March to October.

However, during the peak summer months, flights & hotels are at a premium, so if you can go from April to May or September to October, you’ll find the sweet spot between good value and pleasant weather.

During the summer months from June to August, you may find more seaweed on some beaches.

The rainy season is from November to March. We don’t recommend travelling on a Seychelles honeymoon during the wettest months, December and January, when tropical storms can bring heavy rains.

Where to stay on a Seychelles Honeymoon

Where to stay for your Seychelles on honeymoon? What is the best Seychelles honeymoon all inclusive?

A Seychelles honeymoon is a little different from some of its Indian Ocean neighbours Mauritius or the Maldives.

Seychelles resorts are usually not all-inclusive (although there are some exceptions).

Hotel prices are usually based on bed & breakfast, half board (breakfast and dinner) and full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner).

When you’re choosing between the best Seychelles honeymoon hotels and deciding what board basis you should book, we’d recommend either bed & breakfast or half board.

While you will definitely want to lie by the resort pool or beachfront or swim in your own private plunge pool at your luxury villa, we still strongly recommend getting out to explore the abundance of magical beaches and hikes outside of your resort during your stay.

To truly explore the Seychelles, you may not want to hang around your hotel or resort all-day-every-day. So, going full board might be a waste of money.

If you’re wondering where to eat on your Seychelles honeymoon, there isn’t a huge dining scene in the Seychelles and many couples will eat at their hotel or resort at night (unless you’re somewhere a little ‘livelier’ on Mahé or Praslin).

There are some unassuming gems to be found like La Perle Noire – French inspired, Mahek – delicious Indian and Marie Antoinette – famous creole on Mahé.

Seafood lovers will be in culinary heaven. Grilled fish, caught that day by local fishers.

Delicious curries and many exotic fruit flavours. Western food is widely available, but we’d recommend sticking with local cuisine for the best value!

You’ll find a range of accommodation. From some of the world’s most luxurious hotel groups to three and four-star hotels, that can be great value if you’re planning a honeymoon on a smaller budget

Although budget is not a word usually associated with a Seychelles honeymoon!

Guesthouses for more intrepid travellers are available and villa rental is also possible. There are also private island resorts, which we’ll cover below.

If you prefer a more resort-based all-inclusive beach honeymoon, check out some of our favourite all inclusive destinations.

How to get around Seychelles

How do you get around Seychelles? Getting between the islands is actually very easy!

The ferry service in Seychelles is very efficient, with multiple daily ferries going between the main islands.

You can find ferry schedules on the Cat Cocos website. You can also take inter-island flights with Air Seychelles.

Some luxury resorts also provide helicopter ride transfers.

Once you’re on the islands, getting around is relatively easy, depending on your preference.

You can base yourself at your resort on Mahé and Praslin and book day trips.

Taxis are more scarce (and expensive!). Car hire is ideal for Mahé (we book Seychelles car hire with Discover Cars). In the Seychelles they drive on the left.

Hotels have free parking and you get to explore in your own time, discovering deserted beaches with nobody around.

The roads are narrow and winding, so you don’t need a big vehicle. You could also hire a driver for the day and create your own tailor-made touring itinerary without having to drive – just sit back and enjoy the scenery!

You can also take the local buses, which are inexpensive and efficient – plus you get to experience Seychelles like a local.

Petite Anse Beach Seychelles

The best Seychelles Islands for Honeymoon

You may wonder what is the best island in Seychelles for honeymoon? Don’t make us choose!

Seychelles is 100% a relaxing tropical beach destination where you can lie by the beach or pool.

While many Seychelles honeymoon resorts are on their own stunning stretches of beach, the best way to maximise this incredible destination is to explore the multitude of other sublime beaches and go island hopping.

One of the great things about a Seychelles honeymoon is that all the beaches are publicly owned, so you can visit almost all of them.

However, some hotels have their own private cove or bay, so you may need to access those beaches via these luxury resorts as they will only allow limited numbers on their property every day.

Once you call ahead (ask your hotel to do it), ideally 24-48 hours before, there shouldn’t be any issues. The hotels want to discourage you from coming to these beaches, to keep them only for their guests.

So you may find they won’t let you use the hotel facilities (such as restrooms) if you’re not a guest, so be prepared for this!

You need to hike to get to some beaches and others are right there, just off the road. One of our biggest tips is to get up and be on the road early and you may discover you have some spots all to yourself – magic!

There are also uninhabited islands to explore with beautiful hikes through pristine rainforest with birdlife and waterfalls.

At night, stargazers will be in awe as the galaxy unfolds above you – it’s so incredibly romantic. Snorkelling is world class with many reefs near the shore and, of course, it’s one of the world’s best diving spots.

Let’s give you the lowdown…

Mahé

Airport code: SEZ

Mahé is the biggest island with nearly 90% of the population living here. Even with almost 100,000 people living there, it still feels like 1000 people live on the entire island!

As you fly into Mahé, most couples planning a Seychelles honeymoon will stay at least a few days in a resort around the stunning coastline.

The capital Victoria is one of the world’s smallest and its the perfect place to buy souvenirs and sample exotic fruits in the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market.

Visit the Clock Tower (Little Big Ben), the beautiful Victoria Mosque and the National Botanical Garden. Visit a tea or rum factory. Swim in Sauzier Waterfall.

Mahé has many beautiful beaches and resorts. We love Beau Vallon Beach for something a little livelier.

It’s ideal if you want activities such as water sports and more options for dining. It’s a great base for getting around the island.

There is also the relatively new man-made Eden Island, with contemporary hotels and shops (although we prefer Beau Vallon).

Snorkel in the Saint Anne Marine National Park and hike the Morne Seychelles National Park.

Best Beaches on Mahé – Anse Intendance | Port Launay North Beach | Grand Anse | Anse Takamaka | Petite Anse

Where to stay on Mahé – Whether you decide on a secluded luxury resort or something closer to the action, choose the west coast for the most incredible sunsets you’ll ever experience.

Mahé Seychelles honeymoon hotels we love:

Anantara Maia Seychelles – breathtaking villas overlooking Anse Louis beach

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles – alluring 5* resort with villas on one of the best beaches, Petite Anse

Hilton Seychelles Northolme – Villa resort in a beautiful location close to Beau Vallon

Story Seychelles – large 4* resort in a great location in Beau Vallon – great base

Constance Ephelia Resort – lovely 4* hotel with a mixture of couples and families

sunset praslin seychelles

Praslin

Airport Code: PRI

Praslin island is home to many of Seychelles’ best beaches (and therefore the planet’s!).

It’s even more laid back than Mahé (if that was possible!). You can drive around the island in about 40 minutes.

In the heart of the island is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, home to the famous Coco de Mer palm tree. This beautiful pristine prehistoric rainforest has some gentle trail routes (maximum 2kms).

A day trip to the islands of Cousin, Curieuse & St. Pierre is a must as it’s only a 30-minute boat trip from Praslin.

On Cousin, explore the diverse bird life. On Curieuse you can visit the Giant Tortoises Sanctuary, and hike across the mangroves meeting some incredible creatures before finishing up at Anse St Jose where your boat will pick you up. The picturesque tiny granite islet, St. Pierre is ideal for snorkelling.

Skydive and land on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with Fly Seychelles. You can’t miss out on Praslin on your Seychelles honeymoon!

Best beaches on Praslin – Anse Lazio | Anse Georgette | Anse Volbert (aka Côte d’Or) | Anse Cimitière

Where to stay on Praslin – There is no wrong place to stay on Praslin. Côte d’Or aka Anse Volbert has the largest concentration of hotels and guesthouses, but you are never too far away if you want to visit other parts of the island.

Praslin Seychelles honeymoon hotels we love…

Raffles Seychelles – incredible private pool villas in this luxury resort on Anse Takamaka

Constance Lemuria – luxury resort. Ideally located at Anse Georgette & Anse Keran, some of the world’s best beaches

Le Château de Feuilles – secluded Relais & Chateaux resort with access to private island, Grande-Soeur

Coco de Mer Hotel & Black Parrot Suites – our favourite 4* hotel in the Seychelles

Les Lauriers Eco Hotel – well located on Cote D’or

Paradise Sun – charming 4* hotel in Cote D’or

La Digue

Tiny La Digue (10 sq kms) is close to Praslin. You can take a day trip to the island from Praslin or Mahé.

However, most couples who’ve been on a Seychelles honeymoon cite La Digue as their favourite island and experience and we concur having been there, too!

So we strongly recommend staying at least a couple of nights on the island.

The island has few cars, with most visitors getting around on bikes or on foot. Ferries arrive at La Passe, more like a village rather than a town.

You can easily hire bikes at the port. This is where you’ll also find places to eat and drink.

The beauty of spending some a night or two on La Digue is you can get to one of the most photographed beaches in the world early before the day trippers arrive from other islands!

Anse Source d’Argent is what Seychelles honeymoon dreams are made of. Enormous granite boulders, powdery white sand and shallow turquoise lagoon – no filter needed.

Hire crystal kayaks, hike to Anse Marron and embrace island life.

Best beaches on La Digue – Grand Anse | Anse Cocos | Anse Marron | Anse Source D’Argent

Where to stay on La Digue – you won’t find any big brand ultra-luxury resorts on La Digue, but a smattering of charming guesthouses and a couple of boutique hotels.

La Digue Seychelles honeymoon hotels we love:

Le Nautique Luxury Waterfront Hotel – this bright Seychellois-owned hotel is a lovely option in La Digue

Le Repaire – cute 3* hotel in a great location

Le Domaine de L’Orangeraie Resort and Spa – popular hotel with honeymooners

Other Seychelles Islands

Seychelles has some beautiful private islands, including some of the earth’s finest ultra luxury resorts – perfect for a true honeymoon getaway in paradise.

One of our favourite hotels in the world, the incredible Six Senses Zil Pasyon, is on Félicité Island, just 4kms from La Digue.

The Oceanfront Pool Villas with a private infinity pool, are without a doubt, in our top 3 honeymoon suites in the world.

You can kayak to Cocos Island, experience the cinema under the stars and see turtles hatching (seasonal).

We’re also obsessed with the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island.

A 35-minute flight from Mahé in the Amirante Islands – a remote cluster of coral atolls.

Expect wild roaming tortoises and a castaway island feel – one of the most luxurious experiences in the world – perfect for your Seychelles honeymoon getaway.

Ile Du Nord is home to North Island Seychelles – one of the most exclusive hotels in the world and the honeymoon choice of Britain’s future King and Queen no less.

With just 11 completely secluded and open-plan villas and all the luxury you would expect from one of the world’s best island experiences. Around 20 minutes by helicopter from Mahé.

Denis Private Island is an eco-luxury 25 bungalows with no phone access, Wi-Fi or even TV.

You can truly get off-grid with wonderful Seychellois hospitality and you may even get to see turtles nesting.

Bird Island Seychelles is a self-catering laid-back island around 35 minutes by chartered propeller plane from Mahé.

There is one small shop and one restaurant on the island. This easy-going island is home to thousands of tropical bird species, giant tortoises and coral reefs.

While not a private island, Silhouette is the third largest island in Seychelles, with a tiny population of under 200 people.

Most of the island is designated as a national park. The all-villa Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa is the only resort on the island.

Snorkel at Anse Mondon or challenge yourself to one of the Seychelle’s toughest hikes to the secluded Grande Barbe. There are direct ferries to Silhouette from Mahé.

Cerf Island Resort is only 15 minutes by ferry from Mahé, so not as far as some of the previously mentioned private islands.

This four-star, 25-villa island is ideal if you want something closer to the main islands right in the centre of the Saint Anne Marine National Park.

The all-villa Waldorf Astoria Seychelles Platte Island opened at the end of January 2024.

Île Platte is an island 130km from Mahé in the Southern Coral Group that is part of the Outer Islands of the Seychelles.

Accessible solely by private plane, couples can observe rare species such as Hawksbill and Green Turtles, blacktip sharks, rays, dolphins, and humpback whales, as well as migratory sea birds and Aldabra giant tortoises.

Sailing the Seychelles

Seychelles is a part of the world that sees very little of the large-scale cruise industry.

Because of the remote location, there aren’t many large cruise lines that sail to Seychelles regularly. Usually, any cruises that stop in Seychelles are on a world voyage.

However, it is popular for sailing!

Some small group adventure-companies like Intrepid Travel have week-long sailing tours. You can charter your own yacht too! Sail around paradise on your Seychelles honeymoon!

About

Seychelles, located off the coast of Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia, is a tiny archipelagic African nation. Only 7 of the 115 islands stretching across the Indian Ocean are inhabited.

The lack of big brand shops gives it a decidedly uncommercial feel that makes it appear you’ve stepped back in time a little. However, don’t let this fool you – Seychelles is one of more wealthy countries in Africa.

Although known to Arab and Persian traders for centuries, the first recorded landing in the Seychelles was by the British East India company.

France later annexed it, before the British colonised the islands. Like other former colonies in the Indian Ocean, there is a mix of African, French, British and Creole culture.

Seychelles Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions

Is Seychelles good for a honeymoon?

Absolutely, Seychelles is a stunning honeymoon destination with romantic paradise beaches. It’s truly like a postcard.

It’s perfect for an island-hopping honeymoon!

However, Seychelles isn’t the cheapest destination, and you need a sizeable budget for a luxury honeymoon.

Which is better for a honeymoon, Seychelles or Maldives or Mauritius?

Don’t make us choose! Seychelles, Mauritius, and Maldives truly differ from each other once you dig a little deeper!

We’ve got a handy breakdown of the differences between Seychelles, Maldives, and Mauritius.

The short answer is that how much time you have, the time of year you’re travelling, and what you want from your honeymoon will help you decide between them.

A Seychelles honeymoon is best from April to October, Mauritius is best from April to May and September to November, and Maldives is best from December to April.

Seychelles is not an all-inclusive kind of honeymoon, while the other two can be.

Is Seychelles safe for LGBTQ+ couples?

Same-sex sexual activity has been legal in Seychelles since 2016.

While full equality has yet to be extended to Seychellois LGBTQ+ citizens, Seychelles is a relatively safe place to travel for LGBTQ+ couples.

Local attitudes may vary, as it sadly does the world over, so discretion is recommended.

Hotels do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ couples when extending complimentary honeymoon amenities (where applicable).

How long should we stay in Seychelles for our honeymoon?

The duration of a Seychelles honeymoon will depend on several factors, including your available time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking to have.

We recommend 9 – 10 nights for a Seychelles honeymoon which will give you enough time to relax and experience multiple islands.

However, if you only have 7 nights (for example, you’re adding on a city stop in Dubai or a safari in Tanzania or Kenya), you could pick one to two islands and take some day trips.

How much time you have, how much you want to relax vs. sightseeing will help you decide how many islands to visit and what islands to visit.

When planning your itinerary, remember that 2 nights will only give you 1 full day to explore/relax, 3 nights = 2 full days, 4 nights = 3 full days, and so on.

You’ll definitely want some relaxing beach days at your hotel, but you’ll also want to explore other beaches and islands.

If you have 7 nights, pick one to two islands. If you have 10-14 nights, pick three islands.

How do we get to Seychelles?

The vast majority of couples going on a Seychelles honeymoon will fly to Seychelles International Airport on Mahé, which is about a 15-minute drive from the tiny capital, Victoria.

It is well connected to major Middle East hubs like the United Arab Emirates: Dubai (with Emirates) and Abu Dhabi (with Etihad) (4.5 hours), Doha with Qatar Airways (5 hours), and Istanbul with Turkish Airlines (7.5 hours).

You can also fly from Nairobi with Kenya Airways (4 hours). Air Seychelles also flies to Mumbai (4 hours) and Johannesburg (5 hours).

Do we need a visa for Seychelles?

Most nationalities do not need a visa for Seychelles but can obtain their travel authorisation, which you can organise via iVisa.com.

You need 6 months of validity left on your passport.

Do we need travel vaccinations for Seychelles?

Seychelles is a malaria-free and zika free honeymoon destination, although other mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue may be present.

Some travel vaccinations are recommended. We encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a Tropical Medicine Specialist.

Is a Seychelles honeymoon package expensive?

In a word, yes! The cost of a honeymoon in Seychelles can easily stretch into five figures.

However, it will vary widely depending on several factors including the time of year, the type of accommodations, the length of stay, and the activities planned and when you book.

Seychelles is a moderate to expensive priced honeymoon destination with only a handful of ‘budget’ accommodation options, so plan your honeymoon budget accordingly!

Should we use a travel agent to book a Seychelles honeymoon?

A good travel agent who books Seychelles honeymoons regularly will be able to take care of the nitty-gritty details, and they might even have preferential resort rates.

Using a travel agent has more pros than cons.

However, it’s easy to book a D-I-Y Seychelles honeymoon package.

We’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.

You can book transfers and ferries easily on Viator or GetYourGuide along with tours and excursions.

We would recommend booking before arrival to avoid any issues with availability.

If you’re travelling by ferry from another island back to the airport on Mahé, give yourselves an extra couple of hours in case of delays.

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change airplanes.

We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience (if flying on one ticket).
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

What about travel insurance?

Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount if you’re planning a Seychelles honeymoon itinerary.

It’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.

If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.

World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.

What should we pack for a honeymoon in Seychelles?

Seychelles is a laid back haven and has a tropical climate, so opt for relatively comfortable clothes, like shorts and t-shirts most of the time.

You may want to go glam (particularly in luxury resorts like the Six Senses, Four Seasons, Raffles, and Anantara) with chic and cute summer dresses, jumpsuits, playsuits, and chinos for men.

Add plenty of swimwear and sunglasses to your Seychelles packing list! Don’t forget practical hiking footwear and clothing, too.

Get packing with our free Seychelles Honeymoon Packing List.

Should we bring cash/should we tip in Seychelles?

Most u003cstrongu003etourist businesses in Seychelles accept cards.u003c/strongu003eu003cbru003eu003cbru003eHowever, we would recommend taking some Seychelle Rupees out at the airport for incidentals.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eYou will find ATMs on Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.u003cbru003eu003cbru003eu003cstrongu003eTipping is at your discretionu003c/strongu003e. However, we would recommend 5-10% unless there is a service charge.

What Seychelles souvenirs can we buy?

Seychelles is not an international shopping mecca, which is one of its charms!

If you want big boutiques with international brands, consider a stopover in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

However, you can pick up some lovely locally made products, including Takamaka Rum, vanilla, cinnamon, soaps, and black pearl.

Where can we tag on to Seychelles for a multi-destination honeymoon?

As you can see, whether you have 7, 10, or 14 nights, you can spend your Seychelles honeymoon exploring some magical islands, so if you want to spend the whole time there, you won’t be disappointed!

However, you can easily combine Seychelles with the Middle East and Africa.

You could add on a city honeymoon stop in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

A honeymoon stopover in Abu Dhabi is also a great option, and you can explore fascinating Istanbul too.

There is also a direct flight from Johannesburg, which is a great hub for Southern Africa, and Nairobi, which is a great hub for East Africa.

Explore a honeymoon in South Africa on the Garden Route and Kruger National Park.

Another option is to take a safari in the Serengeti or Masai Mara on a honeymoon in Tanzania or Kenya for the perfect safari and beach combination!

Things to consider before booking your Seychelles honeymoon

While we love to recommend a honeymoon in Seychelles, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!

  • Cost: Seychelles has high costs for luxury accommodation, dining, and activities, which might not suit your budget.

  • Distance: Seychelles is further away and if you only have a short time for your honeymoon, it may not be worth travelling so far away. You don’t want to have to deal with jet lag for your whole honeymoon!

  • Weather: Seychelles’ rainy season months can be a wash out so pick your season carefully.

  • Moving around: While a ‘fly and flop’ kind of honeymoon isn’t impossible, to truly experience Seychelles it’s best to visit more than one island so you need a little bit more time.

  • Lack of all-inclusive resorts: For couples seeking a more resort-based all inclusive experience, then Seychelles is not the right choice. The resorts can be a dated and in need of a refudb, too.

  • Food: While Seychelles offers a unique culinary landscape, with excellent seafood and tropical fruits, the dining scene lacks the diversity of other destinations.

Map of Seychelles

TL;DR?

  • Seychelles is best as an island hopping honeymoon or private island honeymoon
  • It’s not the cheapest destination.
