“We’d love to stay in one of those villas on stilts”. Over the years, this has been one of the most common honeymoon aspirations that we hear. You may be seeking something special to celebrate getting married and the overwater bungalow / overwater villa is one of those experiences that is at the top of most honeymoon bucket lists. The Maldives is the most famous honeymoon destination with these heavenly accommodation types. You’ll find them in the vast majority of the 150+ resorts there (see our Ultimate Maldives Honeymoon Guide for more). French Polynesia is one of the ultimate honeymoon paradises and the overwater bungalow originally started here in the 1960s – almost by accident. Conde Nast Traveler has a fascinating article about the history of the overwater bungalow in Tahiti which you can read here.

There are legendary overwater villa resorts like Conrad Maldives Rangali island and Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. But where else can you go for an overwater experience? Which countries have the best overwater villas? For many years, these two heavenly island nations were the only destinations you could have this unique hotel experience, but thankfully the concept has spread in different forms across the continents from Asia to Europe to the Caribbean. So let us take you to the best overwater villas (not in the Maldives or French Polynesia).
