On one of Mexico’s most beautiful stretches of beach, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun is a long-time favourite with couples since it opened in 2008 and one of the best Secrets resorts.
It’s a little more secluded (it’s about 60 minutes from Cancun and 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen).
The resort is 4 stories high and, like all Secrets Resorts & Spas, despite being a relatively extensive property (Secrets Resorts usually have 400+ rooms), because of the expansive location, you’ll still find a relaxing and peaceful environment.
There are smaller pools and 2 large ones, including an infinity pool. There are six à la carte restaurants, a buffet and a grill and six bars including a divine swim-up bar.
Take a taco-making class or a sunrise kayak tour. With beach parties and theme nights, you may find it hard to tear yourself away from the resort to go on day trips!
The entry-level room is the Junior Suite Tropical View (with a view of the gardens) but we love the upgraded Junior Suite Swim Out rooms with steps down to the pool.

Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is on Akumal Beach, one of the best beaches and places to snorkel along the Riviera Maya’s stunning coast.
Almost halfway between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum (around a 30-minute drive from each), the biggest draw is the turtles that live in the sea here.
At over 90 minutes’ drive from Cancun, it may not be the right choice for couples seeking something lively. What it doesn’t have in wild nightlife, it makes up for in luxury – Secrets Akumal is one of the highest-rated Secrets resorts.

Plus, you get personalised check-in and check-out, concierge service, afternoon hot & cold hors d’oeuvres and elevated desserts and cocktails in the Club Lounge.
Preferred Club is a lovely bonus if it’s within your honeymoon budget.

Should we tip at Secrets Resorts in Mexico?
This is a common question!
Secrets Resorts are all-inclusive, which means gratuities are technically included in the price.
However, tipping is common due to the high percentage of guests from the USA (where tipping is the norm).
It is not mandatory but would be appreciated by the staff, as it is a way to show gratitude for excellent service).
It’s common to leave a few dollars per meal or per round of drinks.
Leaving $3-$5 per day for the housekeeping staff is appreciated, especially if they go above and beyond in keeping your room clean and comfortable.
It’s common to tip luggage attendants around $2-$5 for helping.
For spa treatments, a gratuity of around 15%-20% is the norm.
Most guests tip in USD or Mexican Pesos, depending on what’s more convenient for you. It’s helpful to have small bills before you arrive.
A bunch of US$1 and US$5 bills are handy to have.
What about seaweed in Mexico?
Ah, the Caribbean Sea — azure waters, powdery sands, and… seaweed?
While visions of pristine beaches dance in your head, Mother Nature sometimes has her own plans.
Since 2011, Riviera Maya (and other destinations in the Caribbean) have seen an increase in Sargassum Seaweed, which was widely reported in the media.
When you go on honeymoon to a destination like Mexico, you may have an image of clear powdery sand and azure waters. To arrive at a seaweed-filled beach would, of course, be disappointing for beach-loving couples.
However, the good news is that many resorts have combated this in recent years with ocean barriers and manual beach clean-ups.
It is an unpredictable, natural phenomenon, not yet explained by science. Climate change is most likely a factor.
The seaweed mostly appears at various points in the summer months from May to October.
