Secrets® Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun
On one of Mexico’s most beautiful stretches of beach, Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun is a long-time favourite with couples since it opened in 2008 and one of the best Secrets resorts. It’s a little more secluded (it’s about 60 minutes from Cancun and 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen).
The resort is 4 stories high and, like all Secrets Resorts & Spas, despite being a relatively extensive property (Secrets Resorts have 400+ rooms), because of the expansive location, you’ll still find a relaxing and peaceful environment. There are smaller pools and 2 large ones, including an infinity pool.
Take a taco-making class or a sunrise kayak tour. With beach parties and theme nights, you may find it hard to tear yourself away from the resort to go on day trips! The entry-level room is the Junior Suite Tropical View (essentially it has a view of the gardens) but we love the upgraded Junior Suite Swim Out rooms with steps down to the pool. Six à la carte restaurants, a buffet and a grill and six bars from a divine swim-up. The spa is 13,000 square feet – we love the Share Your Secrets Duo Journey – honeymoon bliss!

Secrets® The Vine Cancun
Secrets The Vine Cancun has been smack bang right in the middle of Cancun’s Hotel Zone (aka Zona Hotelera) since it opened in 2012. This long stretch of beach is around 20 minutes from Cancun Central (aka Cancun Centro). Packed with hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and bars, it’s the perfect choice for couples who want to be really close to the action (and want to do a bit of partying).
All the rooms and suites in this 18-story tower have views of the sea (some will be partial side sea view) so you can wake up every morning to the Caribbean Sea or Laguna Nichupte and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Nine dining options await – from Mediterranean to Asian to Mexican to Peruvian-inspired cuisines. Try to bag a window seat for breakfast overlooking the azure Caribbean water at Market Cafe.
Play beach volleyball or laze in the infinity pool. You can enjoy the evening entertainment in a resort or dance the night away at tourist hotspots like Coco Bongos less than a 10-minute drive away. Secrets® Akumal Riviera Maya
Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya is on Akumal Beach, one of the best places to snorkel along the coast and almost halfway between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum (around a 30-minute drive from each). The biggest draw is the turtles that live in the sea here.
At over 90 minutes’ drive from Cancun, it may not be the right choice for couples seeking something lively. What it doesn’t have in wild nightlife, it makes up for in luxury – Secrets Akumal is one of the highest-rated Secrets® resorts. Since it opened in 2015, it has been one of the best Secrets resorts in Mexico for honeymoon. We find it hard to choose between the swim-out suites and ocean view suites in this low-rise haven!
White sandy beach and swaying palm trees make it one of the most picturesque resorts on the Riviera Maya. Go snorkelling, kayaking and take a bike tour. Learn about Mayan history. Secrets® Moxché Playa Del Carmen
Just opened in summer 2022, Secrets® Moxché Playa del Carmen has a contemporary yet relaxing feel with earthy tones throughout. We love the Junior Suite Ocean View rooms. The dining options are super exciting – with ELEVEN unique outlets – including seven à la carte restaurants and a 24-hour cafe.
We love the Preferred Club’s rooftop restaurant and bar. There is a beautiful seafront, yet you’re only a stone’s throw away from central Playa Del Carmen. If you can tear yourselves away from the seven heated pools and cool features like the man-made cenotes, the town is less than a 15-minute drive away. It’s early days and we don’t have all the details just yet (follow us on social media for all the latest updates!). However, here are a few things we know so far – It will be a unique circular building surrounded by jungle in Tulum. There will be swim-out rooms and 5 dining options, cafes and 3 bars. There will be a rooftop lounge with a swim-up bar and fire pit. And the most exciting bit? A full-service private beach club in the heart of Tulum’s coastline. Honeymoon heaven!

A note on seaweed
Since 2011, Riviera Maya (and other destinations in the Caribbean) have seen an increase in Sargassum Seaweed, which was widely reported in the media. When you go on honeymoon to a destination like Mexico, you may have an image of clear powdery sand and azure waters. To arrive at a seaweed-filled beach would, of course, be disappointing for beach-loving couples.
However, the good news is that many resorts have combated this in recent years with ocean barriers and manual beach clean-ups. It is an unpredictable, natural phenomenon, not yet explained by science. Climate change is probably a factor. The seaweed usually appears at various points in the summer months from May to October. Seaweed also happens in places like Seychelles. We recommend managing your expectations – seaweed is just part of nature after all!

Mexico City is ideal for a city stopover with plenty to do. With cute boutique hotels like La Valise and so much to do, city lovers would be mad to miss it. Take a hot-air balloon ride over Teotihuacan. Do a food tour and visit the Frida Kahlo museum. Go on rollercoasters at Six Flags. The perfect contrast to the beach.
With direct flights to Cancun from most major US cities, you can easily combine the USA with a magical beach honeymoon in one one of the best Secrets resorts in Mexico. Think of a California road trip or a city stop in New York. Maybe Orlando’s theme parks are up your street? A drive through the Deep South or the wilds of the northern states?
