stunning view of beach in Cancun, one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in Mexico, with turquoise waters stretching out to meet the deep blue horizon. Gentle waves roll onto the white sandy shore, where beachgoers relax under straw palapas. The clear, sunny skies and vibrant ocean hues make this a picturesque and inviting tropical beach scene.

Best time to visit Cancun

Couples can plan a Cancun honeymoon year round but if you want the best chance of great weather, then the best time to visit Cancun is from December to April.

This period is considered the dry season and is the most popular, especially around the holidays (Christmas, New Year, and Spring Break).

Expect higher prices and more tourists but with plenty of sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures averaging from 24°C to 29°C (75°F to 85°F).

From May to early November is the off-peak rainy season, characterised by warmer temperatures and higher humidity.

June to November is the hurricane season in the region. Although Cancun is considered outside the hurricane belt.

A high category hurricane hitting Cancun is rare (although the residual rains and storms can affect the region). The highest risk months are for hurricanes are September and October.

During the rainy season, the rain usually comes in short bursts, and there are still plenty of sunny days.

a peaceful beach scene at Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The white sandy beach is dotted with lounge chairs, umbrellas, and a stand-up paddleboard resting on the shore. Palm trees frame the view of a wooden pier stretching into calm blue waters, where boats and yachts are anchored. The bright, sunny sky and gentle waves create an idyllic, tropical atmosphere perfect for relaxation.

Where to stay in Cancun

If you’re planning a Cancun honeymoon, you may be thinking of Cancun the city, but for some it can mean anywhere along the Riviera Maya which stretches down the coast to Playa Del Carmen and even further to Tulum 130km (80 miles) away.

Cancún itself is a city on the Yucatán Peninsula bordering the Caribbean Sea.

The Hotel Zone or Zona Hotelera is the most famous area and best for beach lovers, night owls, and couples looking for a Cancun honeymoon luxury hotel experience with easy access to day trips and generally a more lively honeymoon.

The Hotel Zone is a long, narrow strip of land between the Caribbean Sea and the Nichupte Lagoon, packed with luxury resorts, restaurants, shopping, and nightclubs.

The beautiful white sandy beaches are lovely albeit busy, with breathtaking views of the caribbean sea’s clear turquoise water.

This area is perfect if you want to be in the heart of the action. There are some stunning Cancun honeymoon resorts in the Zona Hotelera like Le Blanc Spa Resort Cancun, Hyatt Zilara Cancun and Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancun.

All the top resorts in Cancun will have luxurious honeymoon suites and multiple romantic restaurants with international cuisine.

A world-class spa where you can indulge in couples massages and other spa treatments to banish any residual post wedding stress!

Plus numerous activities – water sports, fitness center and more.

And, of course, ocean views with romantic sunsets for an unforgettable experience.

Punta Cancun is at the northern tip of the Hotel Zone and is the epicentre of Cancun’s nightlife.

Downtown Cancun aka El Centro is where you’ll find local markets, street food, and a more laid-back vibe. It’s less touristy than the Hotel Zone although couples don’t usually choose to stay here.

Located just north of the Hotel Zone, from Puerto Juarez to Costa Mujeres is a quieter resort area.

Playa Mujeres is a newer development, offering a luxurious and serene environment. It’s home to some of the best the most popular honeymoon resorts like Excellence Playa Mujeres, Beloved Playa Mujeres, and Atelier Playa Mujeres.

Perfect to escape the hustle and bustle of the Hotel Zone but be close enough (10-15 minute drive) from the action.

South of the Hotel Zone, from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, a town along the Riviera Maya, you’ll find beautiful resorts around Riviera Cancun, Puerto Morelos and Punta Maroma like Excellence Riviera Cancun and Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera Cancun and the family-moon friendly, Moon Palace and Hyatt Ziva Cancun.

It’s a great option if you want to relax in a more natural setting while still being within a short drive to Cancun (or halfway between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen) and maybe want to explore outside of your resort for just a night or 1 or 2 nights of your honeymoon.

There are also islands to explore!

Isla Mujeres is the nearest to Cancun. The ferry terminal is located at Puerto Juarez, just north of the Hotel Zone, making it a convenient base if you plan to visit the island or stay at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets, one of our favourite Cancun honeymoon hotels.

Isla Holbox which is two hours drive and a short ferry north of Cancun and Cozumel is just off the coast of Playa Del Carmen.

As you can see there are so many great spots for a Cancun honeymoon!

the iconic Pyramid of Kukulcán at Chichén Itzá, a famous Mayan archaeological site in Mexico. The massive stone structure rises in a series of steep steps, with a staircase leading to the temple at the top. The pyramid stands majestically against a backdrop of a clear sky, highlighting its historical significance and impressive ancient architecture.

Things to do on a Cancun Honeymoon

There truly is a ton of things to do on a Cancun honeymoon!

For history-loving couples, a visit to Chichen Itza is a must. Marvel at the towering pyramid of El Castillo. This ancient Mayan city, now a UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Take a dip in one of the famed cenotes, the natural sinkholes that dot the region.

Cenote Ik Kil and Cenote Dos Ojos are particularly stunning. Swim in their crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush jungle and surreal limestone formations.

Cancun honeymoon adventures await. Explore the tropical jungle on an ATV adventure. Head to one of the Xcaret eco-adventure parks. Zipline through treetops, swim in underground rivers, or take part in the nighttime cultural show.

Water lovers are spoiled for choice in Cancun with so many fun water activites. Charter a private catamaran for a day of sailing through the turquoise Caribbean waters.

If you’re visiting during whale shark season, between June and September, then snorkelling is a must.

Snorkel or dive at the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), where over 500 sculptures create an ethereal underwater gallery, designed to promote coral growth and swim with sea turtles.

For a romantic evening, a sunset cruise complete with gourmet dining is perfect for taking in the beautiful views as the sun sets over the horizon.

Foodies will love a Cancun honeymoon. Book a taco tour or tequila tour to discover the best tacos, fresh seafood, and traditional Yucatecan dishes and tequila and mezcal cocktails.

Get hands-on with a Mexican cooking class for an immersive experience where you’ll learn to create classic dishes like tamales or cochinita pibil.

Don’t forget to make time for relaxing spa days and beach days. Enjoy a couple’s massage overlooking the ocean, or try a traditional Temazcal ceremony — a spiritual Mayan steam bath.

If you want to keep the wedding party going, there’s no better place than a Cancun honeymoon. Coco Bongos is one of Cancun’s most iconic venues, perfect for couples looking to dance the night away. You can even see a Cirque du Soleil show

Don’t miss the outlying islands like day trips to Isla Mujeres and Isla Holbox.

Whether you’re chasing adventure, history, or just luxuriously relaxed post wedding days, a Cancun honeymoon has an array of experiences!

The tranquil sea and soft waves create a serene and dreamy backdrop, while the pastel-colored sky during sunset or sunrise adds to the peaceful atmosphere of this tropical setting.

Dining In Cancun

If you’re wondering what and where to eat and drink in Cancun, you’re spoiled for choice.

Most couples will enjoy the convenience of dining at an all-inclusive Cancun honeymoon resort.

But if you’re in the mood to explore, we asked our readers to share some top recommendations that you shouldn’t miss.

Lorenzillos is a must for seafood lovers, particularly for its renowned lobster dishes served with stunning lagoon views. La Casa De Las Mayoras offers a warm ambiance with traditional Mexican fare, while El Kiosco Verde provides a more casual, local vibe.

Porfirio blends Mexican flavours with modern flair, and Maria Dolores by Edgar Núñez is an upscale, Michelin-recommended take on Mexican cuisine in Playa Mujeres. For fresh, laid-back seafood, El Fish Fritanga is perfect, especially for their fish tacos and ceviche by the lagoon.

If you’re Cancun’s culinary scene, opt for some local Mexican delights. The seafood is incredible with ceviche found everywhere. Don’t miss classics like ke tacos al pastor, elotes, marquesitas and churros.

Pair your meals with many classic margaritas, or try mezcal for a smokier, more complex taste. Don’t forget to sample a michelada, a beer cocktail with a spicy kick.

Cancun Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cancun good for a honeymoon?

Yes! Cancun is an excellent choice for a honeymoon!
It has beaches, luxurious hotels, lots of nightlife, and a ton of things to do—sunset cruises, exploring Mayan ruins, swimming in cenotes, and more. Plus, it’s very affordable!

Although it’s good to beware that Cancun is a tourist town and highly commercialized, so if you’re seeking an authentic Mexican experience, there might be better places to go.

Is Mexico safe for a honeymoon?

Drug-related crime is a significant concern in some parts of Mexico and can vary significantly between states, particularly in areas near the U.S. border and in states like Guerrero, Sinaloa, and Michoacán.

These crimes involve violent conflicts between rival gangs.

However, major tourist destinations like Cancun are popular and typically safe, with a strong police presence. Tourists are not generally targets of organized or drug-related crime and violence.

Is Cancun safe for LGBTQ+ couples?

Cancun is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ couples.

It is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly areas in Mexico, with a tourism industry that caters to people from all walks of life.

However, Mexico is a Catholic country, so local attitudes may vary, as it sadly does the world over, so discretion is always recommended.

Hotels do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ couples when extending complimentary honeymoon amenities (where applicable).

Is there an issue with seaweed in Cancun?

The seaweed issue in Mexico, particularly along the Caribbean coast, has become a significant concern in recent years due to the influx of sargassum, a type of brown seaweed.

The severity can vary depending on the time of year and location. During the rainy season, typically from May to October, is usually the worst time for seaweed.

Left unchecked, sargassum seaweed can create an unpleasant odor and make swimming less enjoyable.

However, the good news is that the local government and many resorts have started actively cleaning the beaches and using sea barriers to minimize the impact.

How long should we stay in Cancun for our honeymoon?

For a honeymoon in Cancun, most couples will stay 7 to 10 nights.

Although if you’re in North America, it can be ideal for a short 4-5 night mini moon, too.

A 7 to 10 night duration allows you to fully enjoy your beautiful Cancun honeymoon resort, relax on beautiful beaches, and have time to explore the vast array of Cancun honeymoon attractions.

Remember that 3 nights will only give you 2 full days and 4 nights is 3 full days and so on!

How do we get to Cancun?

Getting to Cancun is relatively straightforward, as it is a major tourist destination with excellent air connectivity.

Most couples will fly into Cancun International Airport (airport code: CUN), which is well-served by major airlines from cities around the world, including direct flights from many U.S., Canadian, and European cities.

You can also fly from other regional countries like Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama, as well as multiple airports in Mexico.

On arrival, we recommend opting for a private transfer service directly to your Cancun honeymoon hotel. Book a 5-star driver here!

Do we need a visa for Mexico?

Most nationalities do not need a visa for Mexico but will need to fill out a Mexican Tourist Card.

If you are traveling via the USA or Canada to get to Mexico, you may need a US ESTA (visa waiver) or Canadian eTA.

Do we need travel vaccinations for Cancun?

Some travel vaccinations are recommended for Cancun and the surrounding areas. There may be a risk of Zika virus, too, so mosquito protection is strongly recommended.

We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a Tropical Medicine Specialist.

How do we get around Cancun?

While it can be hard to tear yourself away from your luxury Cancun honeymoon resort, you may want to get out and about to explore!

The majority of couples will base themselves at the resort and take excursions, but you can rent a car if you want to explore the Riviera Maya by yourselves. Mexicans drive on the right.

The local bus system is affordable and efficient, particularly if you’re just traveling within Cancun and the Hotel Zone.

Taxis and Uber are widely available in Cancun and are handy for short trips, such as going to restaurants, shopping centres, or beaches in the Hotel Zone and downtown areas.

Some hotels and rental shops offer bikes or scooters for rent. This can be a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the Hotel Zone or nearby areas.

The Hotel Zone is very walkable in parts, too.

Is a Cancun honeymoon package expensive?

Cancun honeymoon packages can be very budget-friendly!

In fact, planning a honeymoon package can be as expensive or as affordable as you choose, depending on your travel style, preferences, and the time of year you visit.

You’ll find a range of all-inclusive honeymoon resorts that fit different budgets. If you choose all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about the bill at the end of your stay.

They range from luxurious and expensive with swim-out rooms to more affordable Cancun honeymoon resorts.

If you can travel outside of the peak times (for example, Christmas, Spring Break) and book earlier rather than later, you can often make some savings!

Should we use a travel agent to book our honeymoon in Cancun?

A good travel agent who books Cancun honeymoons regularly can take care of all the nitty-gritty details and may even have preferential rates. Using a travel agent has a lot of advantages.

However, booking a D-I-Y Cancun honeymoon package is easy, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty program.

You can book transfers and ferries easily, along with tours and excursions on GetYourGuide or Viator.

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change planes. We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience.

Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

What about travel insurance?

Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.

If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.

World Nomads provide travel insurance for travelers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.

What should we pack for a honeymoon in Cancun?

Mexico has a tropical climate, so opt for relatively comfortable clothes, like shorts and t-shirts if you’re out exploring.

Don’t forget practical footwear and clothing if you’re going to be sightseeing, visiting cenotes, and archaeological ruins.

Add plenty of swimwear to your Cancun honeymoon packing list!

Go glam at night with chic and cute summer dresses, jumpsuits, and playsuits for women, and chinos for men.

Make sure you pack reef-friendly sunscreen, insect repellent or a mosquito pen, a rash guard, aqua or reef shoes, and a waterproof phone case.

Should we bring cash/should we tip in Cancun?

While credit and debit cards are widely accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, it’s a good idea to have some cash when traveling to Cancun so you can tip and buy from local markets and street vendors.

You can use US dollars, but pay in pesos if you can, for a better deal.

You can take out some pesos at the airport, and ATMs are widely available.

Yes, tipping is customary and appreciated in Cancun, and the tipping culture is similar to the US, so 15-20% is the norm in restaurants, and rounding up for other services.

If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort, we’d recommend having a small budget for tips of around $15-20 per person per day for wait staff and housekeeping.

What Cancun souvenirs can we buy?

You’ll find a mix of markets and modern malls in Cancun. For upscale shopping, visit La Isla Shopping Village, where you’ll find luxury brands.

You can buy Mexican handicrafts from textiles to maracas and silver jewelry.
But our favorite buys are food and drink related—hot sauces, chocolate, and bottles of tequila and mezcal!

Where can we tag on to Cancun for a multi-destination honeymoon?

As you can see, no matter how much time you have, there is so much to see and do on a honeymoon in Cancun—you could easily spend your whole honeymoon here!

There are many other Mexican honeymoon destinations, too. From nearby Tulum and the resorts along the Riviera Maya and nearby islands to destinations like Oaxaca and San Miguel de Allende.

However, it is very easy to add some other destinations to make a magical multi-destination honeymoon.

One of the most popular options is combining a US or Canadian city for the ultimate city and beach honeymoon combination with a dash of adventure, too.
Consider a honeymoon in Miami, New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, or Toronto, to name a few!

There are direct flights to Central American and Caribbean honeymoon destinations just a short flight away.

A tour of Cuba with a beach stay in Mexico. Tropical paradise, Belize, lying south of the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of our favourite underrated honeymoon destinations, too, with lush jungles, Mayan ruins, and some of the best scuba diving in the world.

How about off the beaten track adventures in Guatemala, or an adventure honeymoon in Costa Rica or exploring a honeymoon in Argentina or a Colombia or Peru honeymoon?

Just some of the incredible destinations to combine with your Cancun honeymoon!

Things to consider before booking a Cancun honeymoon

While we love to recommend Cancun for honeymoon, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!

  • Overcommercialization: Cancun is one of the planet’s most popular travel destinations. As it is very commercialised and tourist-centric so it can be crowded in parts and more difficult to experience authentic Mexican culture. You may find down the coast has a more romantic atmosphere.

  • Weather: While you would be unlucky to encounter extreme weather, Cancun’s proximity to a hurricane region can occasionally lead to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

  • Sargassum (Seaweed): In recent years, Cancun’s beaches have occasionally been affected by sargassum, a type of seaweed. Check if your chosen Cancun honeymoon resort has barriers or participates in beach cleanups.
