Best time to visit Argentina for honeymoon

Argentina is so vast that it has multiple climates to consider. Overall, the best time to visit Argentina for a honeymoon is from October to April (or Spring to Autumn in the southern hemisphere).

During summer, from December to February, Buenos Aires and the north of the country around Salta and Mendoza buzz with energy under the warm sun, with temperatures averaging 28°C (82°F) to 31°C (88°F).

Summer at Iguazu Falls can be rainy but increase the volume of the falls, making them even more spectacular.

As you go further south, the Lake District is a haven for outdoor lovers with a pleasant 24°C (75°F). Patagonia and Ushuaia, being closer to the Antarctic, are cooler, with temperatures averaging 14°C (57°F).

Spring and Autumn, March to May and September to November, are transitional months. Temperatures are cooler but still pleasant ranging from 19°C (66°F) to 22°C (72°F), The Lake District is in bloom in spring and the colours turn in autumn. Patagonia and Ushuaia are quite cold though.

Winter brings different variations of cold. Patagonia and the Lake District become snowy paradises. While Buenos Aires and other northern Argentina honeymoon destinations, like Salta and Mendoza, have mild temperatures averaging 11°C (52°F) to 16°C (61°F).

How to get around Argentina

Argentina is the 8th largest country by land size in the world so the distances are huge. Thankfully, the country has a well-developed domestic flight network, making it easy to travel between major tourist destinations.

The largest airline is Aerolíneas Argentinas, which operates flights across the country. There is also the newer FlyBondi. It’s worth checking out their multi-city passes for the best value.

If you have a lot of time, bus companies like Flecha Bus are a popular mode of transportation in Argentina, with a comprehensive network of long-distance and local buses connecting cities and towns throughout the country. Train travel is more limited.

Car hire is an option, too, if you have more time. If you choose a road trip Argentina honeymoon, some Spanish language skills are useful and remember the driving culture may be different from at home. Having your own vehicle will give you more freedom and flexibility. Argentinians drive on the right.

In Buenos Aires, it’s easy to get around as the neighbourhoods are very walkable and you can get around by bike, subway and Uber, too.

Argentina Honeymoon Itinerary

An Argentina honeymoon will be nothing short of epic but it needs time as the best Argentina honeymoon destinations are spread out across the country.

Here is a suggested itinerary for a two-week / 14-night Argentina honeymoon itinerary with some suggestions of where to leave out and add on if you’ve more time.

This itinerary is just a suggestion, and you can customise it to your preferences and budget. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or romance, an Argentina honeymoon has it all!

Buenos Aires (3 nights)

Buenos Aires is a city that needs no introduction. Full of culture, history, and of course, great food. We could recommend staying in Buenos Aires for the whole of your Argentina honeymoon. You may never want to leave.

The hardest part is choosing what you bear to leave off your Buenos Aires itinerary.

Spend your days exploring the colourful neighbourhoods and indulging in delicious food, and, of course, all the Malbec.

Start with a bike tour of the city. Visit the iconic Recoleta Cemetery (yes a cemetery might be a little weird but it’s a fascinating place!). Stroll through the historic streets of San Telmo, check out the street art and shopping and dining in Palermo.

Marvel at the Caminito, the colourful street of Boca where you dive deep into Argentina’s love of football (or soccer) with local club Boca Juniors’s stadium, La Bombonera, and see the shrines to Argentina’s most famous son, Maradona.

Take a tour of the majestic Teatro Colon. Learn to make empanadas and heavenly Dulce de leche filled alfajores. Eat steak at a traditional parrilla or asado. Don’t miss the cocktail bars and, of course, a tango show.

Check prices and book BE Jardin Escondido By Coppola on Booking.com or Expedia.com or Faena Hotel Buenos Aires on Booking.com or Expedia.com

Iguazu Falls (2 nights)

Iguazu Falls is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the world, and a must-visit destination for your Argentina honeymoon. It’s impossible to describe the magic of seeing this force of nature on the border of Brazil and Argentina.

The Argentine side has nature trails leading close to the waterfalls, including an up close view of the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat). In contrast, the Brazilian side is all about the sweeping panoramic views.

Depart on an early flight to Puerto Iguazu (airport code: IGR). On arrival, transfer to your hotel, and you should still have time to spend the afternoon on the Brazilian side of falls (if you’re not too tired).

The next day, take a day trip to see the falls from the Argentinian side. You can also explore the surrounding rainforest, go on a boat ride under the falls, or even take a helicopter tour for a bird’s-eye view.

Salta (2 nights)

From Iguazu, fly to Salta (airport code: SLA) in the northwest. This charming colonial city is the gateway to magnificent landscapes.

Spend an afternoon exploring the city. Visit the San Francisco Convent, take the cable car to the top of Cerro San Bernardo, and try the local empanadas.

The following day, it’s time to take a scenic drive through the nearby valleys, mountains and salt plains.

Explore the Hill of 7 Colours in the town of Purmamarca and visit the beautiful Salinas Grandes. The moon-like, white desert salt pan is an absolute must.

If you have more time for your Argentina honeymoon, there is even more to do around Salta.

You can take a day trip to Cafayate, one of the most celebrated wine regions of Argentina. The Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds) is a popular tourist train that operates from Salta to the Andes mountains.

Los Cardones National Park is a Joshua Tree-like gem with huge cacti and beautiful scenery.

Mendoza (2 nights)

Take a flight to Mendoza (airport code: MDZ), Argentina’s premier wine region, and a perfect place to relax and unwind after the previous adventures.

Spend two nights in a vineyard hotel, and enjoy wine tastings, gourmet meals, and stunning views of the Andes Mountains.

If you’ve more time, you can also go on horseback rides, take a bike tour of the vineyards, or hike the Aconcagua National Park.

Check prices and book Casa de Uco Vineyards and Wine Resort on Booking.com or Expedia.com or Susana Balbo Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites on Booking.com or Expedia.com

Lake District (2 nights)

The Lake District is a stunning region of crystal-clear lakes, snow-capped mountains, and charming towns in northern Patagonia.

Take a flight to San Carlos de Bariloche (airport code: BRC), the largest town in the area, and explore the surrounding nature.

Take a day trip along the Road of the Seven Lakes with unparalleled views of the countryside. Visit the mountain village, Villa La Angostura, with its stylized Alpine-wood architecture.

If you’ve more time, go kayaking on Nahuel Huapi lake. Take a ride on the Cerro Otto Cable Car. Visit Cerro Catedral, one of Argentina’s premier ski areas but is open all year for adventure lovers with hikes and biking in summer.

Check prices and book Las Balsas Relais & Chateaux on Booking.com or Expedia.com

Patagonia (3 nights)

Last but certainly not least on this Argentina honeymoon itinerary is southern Patagonia. This vast region of glaciers and mountains is unmissable.

Fly to El Calafate (airport code: FTE), the gateway to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Perito Moreno Glacier

Spend a day taking a guided tour of the glacier, which is in Los Glaciares National Park.

Go ice trekking or on a kayak tour. Enjoy the starry night skies in one of the most remote places on earth.

If you’re not too exhausted, you can also take the long, albeit totally worth-it day trip to Chile’s magnificent Torres del Paine National Park.

Check prices and book Explora en El Chalten on Booking.com or Expedia.com or EOLO – Patagonia’s Spirit on Expedia.com

If you have more time

If you have more time to spend on your Argentina honeymoon, you could extend your trip in any of the destinations mentioned, but there are other spots to consider.

The Pampas region is famous for its gaucho culture and horseback riding. Consider staying at an estancia (ranch) like Estancia Don Joaquín and learning about the traditions of the gauchos. You can also enjoy delicious Argentine cuisine and relax in the peaceful countryside.

Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, is a must-visit destination for adventure lovers. Located in Tierra del Fuego, this region offers breathtaking landscapes and a wide range of outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, and kayaking.

You can also take a cruise to explore the nearby islands and see wildlife such as penguins, sea lions, and whales. It’s the jumpoff point for Antarctica cruises, too.

Argentina may not have tropical beaches like other destinations in Latin America but the resort city Mar del Plata is a popular beach destination with Argentinians.

If you have less time

If you have limited time for your Argentina honeymoon, we recommend you focus on a few key destinations. Buenos Aires is a great place to start your trip and our top picks after this would be Iguazu Falls, Mendoza and Patagonia.

If you’re short on time, consider a small group adventure tour. Not only are they excellent value, but you fit so much in.

Argentina Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions

Is Argentina good for honeymoon

Absolutely! An Argentina honeymoon will be romantic and adventurous.

There is a wide range of experiences for foodies, culture, outdoor, nature and adventure lovers. The breathtaking natural wonders of Argentina make it one of our top picks for a honeymoon.

How to get to Argentina

Most international flights to Argentina arrive at Ezeiza International Airport in Buenos Aires (airport code: EZE).

Buenos Aires has connections to/from most major US hubs like New York, Miami, Dallas, Houston and Atlanta. You can also fly directly from major European cities like Madrid, London, Paris and Rome.

Buenos Aires has a second airport, Aeroparque Internacional Jorge Newbery (airport code: AEP) which mainly serves domestic and regional flights.

On arrival, book a private transfer to pick you up for an easy start to your Argentina honeymoon.

Mendoza (MDZ) and Cordoba (COR) also receive regional international flights from Santiago in Chile.

How long should we stay in Argentina on honeymoon

As you can see, there are so many things to add to your Argentina honeymoon itinerary!

14-21 nights is ideal. For couples who have less time, we’d recommend at least 10 nights which will allow you to recover from jet lag and catch some highlights.

The ideal duration of an Argentina honeymoon itinerary can vary depending on personal preferences and budget.

Is Argentina expensive

Argentina’s travel costs vary by style but despite it costing a little more to get there, once you arrive, it is relatively affordable compared to North America and Western Europe, though it may be pricier than some South American countries.

Argentina’s economy has been prone to inflation and currency fluctuations, which can impact travel costs.

Should we use a travel agent to book an Argentina honeymoon

A good travel agent or tour operator who books Argentina honeymoons regularly will usually have a direct relationship with a destination management company in the country, meaning a smooth journey.

They may have preferential rates, so it’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent. Planning with a travel agent can have a lot of benefits.

However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Argentina honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.

You can book transfers and ferries easily, along with tours and excursions on GetYourGuide or Viator.

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change aeroplanes. We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience.

Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

Is Argentina safe for a honeymoon

Argentina is generally a safe destination for a honeymoon.

Like any other country, it’s important to take common-sense precautions, such as not carrying too much cash and leaving your valuables at home, particularly in the cities where petty crime is common.

Argentina, like many destinations around the world, is prone to political / civil protests. Exercise caution and adhere to local advice if there are protests while travelling.

Is Argentina safe for LGBTQ+ couples

Argentina is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in Latin America. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010, and the country has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community.

This being said, local attitudes may vary, as it sadly does the world over, so discretion is always recommended.

Hotels do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ couples when extending complimentary honeymoon amenities.

Should we bring cash / should we tip

Cash is still king in Argentina and it is recommended to bring some US$ with you to exchange into Argentine pesos.

For reasons we won’t get into here, Argentina’s currency is volatile. While ATMs are widely available, credit cards are not accepted everywhere.

Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated for good service. A tip of 10-15% in restaurants and for tour guides would be the norm.

What to pack for an Argentina honeymoon

When packing for your Argentina honeymoon, it’s important to consider the varying climate and the activities you’ll be doing.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket. If you plan to visit cooler destinations, such as Patagonia and Ushuaia, bring layers as it is much cooler in these destinations, even in summer.

Get packing with our Honeymoon Packing Bundle.

Where can we tag on to Argentina for a multi-destination honeymoon

As you can see, no matter how much time you have, you could easily spend your whole honeymoon in Argentina.

However, it is a great starting point for a multi-destination honeymoon in South America if you have more time.

An easy addition is a visit to Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. This charming city is easily accessible by ferry from Buenos Aires and is known for its beautiful architecture, museums, and nightlife. You can also take a day trip to nearby Colonia del Sacramento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From Iguazu Falls you can easily hop over to the Brazilian side of the Falls to Foz do Iguaçu and then hop up to Rio de Janeiro and other areas of Brazil.

From Mendoza, you can take the bus or fly across the Andes for an epic honeymoon in Chile.

From Salta you can travel up through Bolivia’s Uyuni Salt Flats to La Paz and on to Lake Titicaca and Peru for a true bucket list adventure.

From Buenos Aires you can fly to Ecuador and on to the Galapagos islands. You can fly to Colombia and Mexico City.

For the ultimate bucket list adventure, consider taking an Antarctic cruise from Ushuaia. This once-in-a-lifetime experience will take you to the end of the world.

If you’re flying from or via the US, then you could tag on a city honeymoon in New York or Miami for a few days.
