Honeymoon in Ecuador

Ecuador | The Honeymoon Guide

Why Go

A honeymoon in Ecuador is a wild, beautiful adventure – the kind that leaves you spellbound at every turn. From snow-capped volcanoes and lush Amazon rainforest to pastel-painted colonial towns and the otherworldly Galápagos Islands, Ecuador packs astonishing diversity into a compact, easy-to-travel country.

Start in Quito, a UNESCO-listed capital cradled high in the Andes. Wander cobbled streets lined with baroque churches and leafy plazas, then head into the hills for heart-pounding adventures in the Mindo Cloud Forest, where you can go zip-lining through misty canopies and chase waterfalls.

Stand at the equator in Mitad del Mundo, and browse the colourful Otavalo Market, famous for intricate textiles woven by Indigenous artisans.

Venture south to Cotopaxi National Park, where the dramatic snow-topped volcano dominates the horizon. You can hike or mountain-bike through páramo landscapes before unwinding in the Papallacta Hot Springs, with Andean peaks glinting in the distance.

In Baños, adrenaline meets relaxation – ride horses beneath Tungurahua Volcano, soak in thermal pools, and swing over the edge of the world at Casa del Árbol.

Continue east into the Amazon Basin, where river lodges offer hammocks strung over jungle backdrops alive with birdsong and howler monkeys.

Glide by canoe along rainforest waterways, meet local communities, and learn about one of the planet’s most biodiverse ecosystems.

Fly south to Cuenca, another UNESCO treasure with elegant plazas and red-tiled rooftops, or visit El Cajas National Park, known for mirror-like lagoons and rugged mountain trails.

On the Pacific coast, Guayaquil makes an ideal base for laid-back beach towns like Salinas and Montañita, and nearby Isla de la Plata, nicknamed “the poor man’s Galápagos,” for its blue-footed boobies and sea turtles.

Then, of course, there’s the ultimate bucket-list destination – the Galápagos Islands. A world apart, this volcanic archipelago overflows with wildlife you won’t find anywhere else.

Cruise between islands to spot giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and playful sea lions. On Santa Cruz Island, visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, kayak in turquoise bays, and relax on pristine beaches like Tortuga Bay.

Whether you choose a luxury expedition cruise or a land-based island-hop, a honeymoon in the Galápagos feels surreal – part safari, part paradise.

Best Time To Visit

Ecuador’s varied geography means there’s no bad time to visit.

On the mainland, the dry season (June to September) is ideal for hiking and crisp Andean views, while from October to May you’ll find greener valleys and occasional showers without disrupting most plans. The Amazon is hot and humid year-round; if you prefer fewer downpours, the driest stretch is typically August–November.

The Galápagos Islands are spectacular in all seasons. The warm, wet season (December–May) delivers calmer seas, clearer skies, and warmer water – perfect for snorkelling, kayaking, and beginner-friendly diving. Landscapes look lush and many species court and nest, so wildlife action is close to shore.

From June to November, the cool, dry season brings nutrient-rich Humboldt currents. Seas can be choppier and the water cooler (a wetsuit helps), but this is prime time for serious divers: think bigger pelagics and schooling action, including hammerheads and (on certain itineraries) whale sharks. If you’re prone to seasickness or want gentler conditions, lean toward December to May or choose a land-based island hop over a live-aboard.

How Long To Stay

For the best balance, plan at least 10 to 14 nights for a honeymoon in Ecuador, splitting your time between the Andes, the Amazon, and the coast.

If you’re including the Galápagos Islands, allow at least 7 nights there.

Where To Tag On

Ecuador combines beautifully with other destinations in South and Central America.

You could travel south into Peru to see Machu Picchu, or north into Colombia for coffee, culture, and Caribbean beaches. If you’re craving a cosmopolitan stopover, add a few nights in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, or Mexico City.

For a tropical finale, fly to Mexico’s Riviera Maya, or pair Ecuador with a Caribbean island such as Aruba or the Dominican Republic. North America connections also make Miami or New York easy stopovers before or after your Ecuador honeymoon.
