Best time to visit the Amalfi Coast
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast for a honeymoon is April to October.
Late June, July and August is the peak tourist season. The weather is hot and sunny, perfect for beach days and boat trips, but the towns can be very crowded and there have been extreme heatwaves in Italy in recent years.
Prices are at their highest and traffic along the winding cliff side coastal roads can be quite heavy.
The sea can be a bit cooler in April and but it’s a beautiful time for exploring the towns. Some tourist services may still be closed earlier in the month.
In September and October, the heat subsides and the sea remains warm enough for swimming without the heaving crowds. By later in October the tourist services are winding down.
From November to March, the coast experiences cooler temperatures and occasional rain. Many hotels, restaurants and tourist services are closed for the season, and the region quiets down significantly.
Overall if you’re planning an Amalfi Coast honeymoon, we’d recommend late April to early June and September to mid October.
Amalfi Coast Honeymoon Destinations – Where To Stay
As you plan your Amalfi Coast honeymoon, one of the biggest questions you may have is where is the best place to stay for an Amalfi Coast honeymoon?
There are beautiful towns, villages and islands dotted along the Bay of Naples, the Sorrentine Peninsula and Amalfi Coast.
The Amalfi Coast overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Salerno in Italy. It is located south of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula and north of the lesser explored Cilento Coast.
The Amalfi Coast is dotted with towns and villages including Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca de’ Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Positano, Praiano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti, and Vietri sul Mare, which is next to the ancient city of Salerno.
Although Naples, Sorrento and Salerno are not part of the Amalfi Coast, they are the gateway to this heavenly region.
The islands of Capri and Ischia are part of the Metropolitan City of Naples and are worthy considerations and often included in an Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary, too.
When choosing where to stay on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon, bear in mind the best honeymoon hotels in Amalfi Coast book out early so plan your trip as early as possible.
Keep reading for a run down of all the spots you need to know about!
Naples
Gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Naples or Napoli is one of Italy’s underrated cities. It’s a little grittier than other Italian cities but that is what makes it Naples. There is much to see and do that you’d be crazy not to explore for a night or two.
Its streets are a canvas of authentic Italian life, with Vespas zipping past historic piazzas and the aroma of authentic Neapolitan pizza filling the air.
The museums, churches, and historic sites plus the pizza are not to be missed. Where to stay in Naples? Romeo Napoli with its heavenly pool is the spot.
Sorrento
Sorrento is a larger picturesque town perched on a cliff top overlooking the Bay of Naples. It’s practically a suburb of Naples as both are sprawling!
It’s known for its lemon groves, stunning views, and charming historic centre. Spend a day wandering the streets and sampling the local limoncello.
Sorrento has a great choice of hotels including boutique gem, Maison La Minervetta Sorrento, so it’s a good base for exploring the region or if you’re planning an Italy honeymoon on a budget.
With the train, marina / port area, buses all travelling to/from Sorrento, it means easy access to many of the highlights of an Amalfi Coast honeymoon.
Ischia
Many couples are enthralled with the glitzy island of Capri but just a short ferry ride from Naples, lies Ischia.
Known for its thermal springs and lush botanical gardens, Ischia offers a rejuvenating retreat from the mainland’s hustle. The island’s crowning glory is the Aragonese Castle, set on a rocky islet, accessible via a stone bridge that seems to float on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Ischia’s vineyards drape over rolling hills, where you can indulge in local wine tasting sessions. The island’s rustic charm means there aren’t many ultra luxury resorts you can stay in but we’re a little bit obsessed with Ishia’s Faro Punta Imperatore and Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa is another good option.
Capri
The island of Capri, a short ferry ride from Sorrento or Naples, is synonymous with exclusivity and chic Italian vibes.
Its piazzetta is a crossroads of global jet-setters and local charm. Capri’s allure is timeless, with Roman ruins whispering tales of ancient opulence and the designer boutiques and high-end restaurants and beautiful hotels like J.K. Place Capri, purring with lavish stories.
Take a boat tour around the island to see the famous Blue Grotto and stunning rock formations. Capri is a great place to splurge on a fancy dinner or cocktail.
If time (or money) means a Capri stay is not an option, it’s very easy to take a day trip to the island.
Positano
The vertical town where colourful buildings cascade down to the shore, Positano is an Amalfi Coast honeymoon gem that probably needs no introduction! In fact it’s one of our top picks for an Amalfi Coast honeymoon.
Yes, this spectacle of colour and beauty can get crowded but it’s still beautiful and if you stay here, you’ll have quiet moments in your cliffside hotel like Le Sirenuse Hotel Positano and in the morning before the day trippers arrive.
Spend a day lounging on the beach, by your pool, browsing the chic boutiques and galleries or having a seafood lunch as the crowds walk on by.
Praiano
Praiano is a tranquil respite from its bustling neighbours. A hidden gem with a slower pace, it’s a sanctuary for those seeking a more intimate experience.
The town is a short drive from Positano, yet it feels worlds apart, with quiet beaches like Marina di Praia and one of the best Amalfi Coast honeymoon hotels, Casa Angelina Praiano.
It’s a great place to relax and soak up the sun, with stunning views.
Amalfi Town
Amalfi Town, the coast’s namesake, is a treasure trove of maritime lore. The Cathedral of Saint Andrew or Duomo di Amalfi, with its striking staircase, dominates the town’s architecture. Amalfi’s charm lies in its labyrinthine streets.
Atrani is a small village about a 10 minute walk away, nestled in a valley between two cliffs. It is one of the best preserved medieval towns on the Amalfi Coast with a large beach.
There are some beautiful Amalfi Coast honeymoon hotels nearby like Monastero Santa Rosa, set within the historic stone walls of the ancient monastery.
Ravello
Ravello is perched high above the sea town known for its stunning gardens and panoramic views. It’s a great place to escape the heat and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the lush greenery.
Walk through the luxury villas and marvel at the scenery. Ravello is one of top picks for places to stay on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon with heavenly hotels like Caruso, a Belmond Hotel which has one of our favourite rooftop hotel pools in the world.
Maiori & Minori
Maiori and Minori are two neighbouring towns with long beaches and a relaxed atmosphere. In fact, Maiori has the longest beach on the Amalfi Coast.
They’re a great place to unwind and enjoy the simple pleasures of sun, sea, and sand without the heavy crowds of Positano. There aren’t any luxury Amalfi Coast honeymoon hotels of note on this side of the coastline.
Salerno
With its own port and train station, and like Sorrento, Salerno is a great base for exploring on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon with easy access to Pompeii, and lesser discovered gems like the ancient Greek ruins of the city of Paestum and the Cilento National Park which lie south of the Amalfi Coast.
Salerno, like Maiori & Minori, is less glitzy with no Amalfi Coast honeymoon hotels. It’s the less touristy side of the Amalfi Coast.
Things to do in Amalfi Coast for Honeymoon
You’re in for a treat on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon, there are so many fun and romantic things to do! Here are our top picks…
Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius
Take a day trip to Pompeii, the huge archaeological site that was once a thriving Roman city, but was buried under metres of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.
You can also hike Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano or visit them both in one day. The vineyards on the slopes of Vesuvius are worth a visit, too.

There is a difference between Neapolitan and Roman pizza and you can learn about the secrets in one afternoon.

Whether you stay for a couple of nights or just go on a day trip, exploring Naples is one of our top picks for culture, history and food lovers.
Explore the underground burial chambers of the Catacombs of San Gennaro, a fascinating and kinda eerie attraction.
Visit the Sansevero Chapel Museum to see the stunning sculptures and artwork. The highlight is the Veiled Christ, a masterpiece of marble sculpture. Football / Soccer lovers have to get a selfie at the Maradona mural.
The best way to experience Naples is on a street food tour of Naples to taste the best local dishes and learn about the city’s considerable culinary traditions.
Capri Boat Tour
You may be lucky enough to have time on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon to spend a couple of nights on the beautiful and chic island of Capri.
But for couples who have less time, take a boat tour to see the stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters. You’ll have the opportunity to swim, snorkel, and relax in the sun and see some of the highlights including the Blue Grotto.
Path of the Gods Hike
One of our top picks for things to do on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon is hike the Path of the Gods (Il Sentiero degli Dei), a scenic trail that offers breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast.
It’s 3-4 hour / 7.5 kilometres hike and is classed as a moderately challenging but rewarding experience that you’ll never forget.
See the remains of ancient farmhouses and meet local shepherds carrying wood with their mules, or milk to remote towns dotted around the hills and along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Lemon Garden
Amalfi lemons are bigger than the standard lemons you’ll find at home. From lemon sorbet to limoncello cocktails and a thousand lemon souvenirs, this wouldn’t be an Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary without experiencing everything lemon!
Visit a lemon garden in Sorrento to see the beautiful citrus trees and taste the famous limoncello liqueur and lemon-scented olives. Lemon heaven!
Pasta Cooking Class
Is it a honeymoon in Italy without taking a pasta making class?
One of our top picks for your Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary is high up in the hills in Pianillo where you’ll not only learn to make pasta, but mozzarella and tiramisu on a local farm with home made wine flowing. Foodie heaven. Click to book!
Sunset Cruise
There are many wonderful boat trips to take you out on the Tyrrhenian Sea where you can marvel at one of the world’s most beautiful coastline.
But, one of our top picks for things to do on an Amalfi Coast honeymoon is to leave the crowds behind and take a private romantic sunset cruise. With just the two of you (and the captain) and glass of prosecco in hand, truly memories you’ll treasure forever!
If you’re on a tighter budget for your Amalfi Coast honeymoon, you can book a no licence needed boat rental, too!
Vespa or Vintage Fiat 500 Tour
Don’t want to brave the crazy winding roads of the Amalfi Coast by yourselves? Then let an expert follow the curves on a Vespa tour. Explore the Amalfi Coast in true Italian style.
Bikes not your thing? Want some instagrammable moments? Then book a photo tour in a vintage Fiat 500 where you can discover the best photo spots. The perfect Amalfi Coast honeymoon souvenir.
Water Sports
Take to the water and go kayaking and / or parasailing, just two of our top picks for things to do on an Amalfi Coast honeymoon. Thrillseekers will love this adventurous way to see the stunning coastline and crystal-clear waters.
Explore Ravello
Ravello is perched 365 metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea, and is one of the most enchanting Amalfi Coast honeymoon jewels.
Beloved by intellectuals, artists, and musicians, including Wagner who composed part of Parsifal here.
Famous for its breathtaking views, Ravello hosts the renowned Ravello Festival at Villa Rufolo and boasts the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone, once a romantic retreat for Greta Garbo.
If you don’t have to stay, a tour of it’s gems is a must add on to your Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary.
Wine Tour
Forget Tuscany and Piedmont! If you have more time or are huge oenophiles, then explore the vineyards of the Campania region on a wine tour!
Go a little further inland to visit delectable wineries in the Irpinia region in the Apennine Mountains or stay a little closer to home with a tour of verdant valley of Tramonti or the small village of Furore where you’ll find the vertical vineyards.
Valle delle Ferriere
Explore the mountains behind the Amalfi Coast on a hike in Riserva Naturale Valle delle Ferriere or literally translated as Valley of Ironworks Natural Reserve.
You’ll hike past beautiful waterfalls and ancient buildings in this slightly off the beaten track tour.
Relax on the Beach
So while the Amalfi Coast is not known for tropical style beaches, the dark sand havens (or more accurately fine rock) lined with sunbeds and striped umbrellas are nonetheless rather iconic!
Make time to relax for an afternoon on one of Positano’s best beaches and splash out on your own sun bed and umbrella. It’s usually around €25 per day in peak season (but well worth it!).
Romantic Dinner
A romantic dinner might seem like an obvious choice for things to do on an Amalfi Coast honeymoon but treating yourself to one of the delectable dining experiences is an absolute must.
Our top picks (which we found via the Michelin Guide) from our own Amalfi Coast travels is Li Galli Restaurant for the heavenly rooftop or the beachfront vibe of Rada Ristorante in Positano.
Amalfi Coast Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Amalfi Coast good for a honeymoon?
The Amalfi Coast, with its serpentine shoreline and stunning villages, natural beauty, Italian culture, and a touch of glamour, make it one of the planet’s top honeymoon destinations.
However, with beauty comes pain and the crowds in high summer can dial down the romantic aspect so travel outside of the peak months if you can!
How long should we stay on the Amalfi Coast for our honeymoon?
The ideal duration of an Amalfi Coast honeymoon will vary depending on personal preferences.
The duration of your stay can vary widely depending on your interests, your pace of travel, and budget.
Many couples spend just a few nights in Positano or one of the small villages or towns, as they are on a tight European honeymoon multi-stop schedule or part of a larger Italian itinerary.
A 7-night Amalfi Coast honeymoon allows you to dig deeper.
Here’s a sample 7 night Amalfi Coast honeymoon itinerary:
Day 1 & 2: Explore the town where you’re based, such as Positano, Ravello or Amalfi. Take time to wander the streets, visit the beaches, and enjoy a leisurely meal with a view of the sea.
Day 3: Dedicate this day to one of the towns you’re not staying in. For example if you’re staying in Positano, then explore Ravello for an afternoon, with its stunning villas and gardens.
Day 4: Visit the historical sites of Pompeii or Herculaneum in the morning (a short train ride away), and spend the afternoon in Sorrento, perhaps indulging in some local limoncello.
Day 5: Take a day trip to the island of Capri. Enjoy the boat ride over and spend the day exploring the island’s gardens, villas, and shops. (Or, consider staying for 2 nights).
Day 6: Take a scenic drive or a bus ride along the coast, stopping at various towns like Praiano, Furore, and the lesser-known Minori and Maiori.
Day 7: Reserve this day for leisure, shopping, and relaxation. Perhaps a cooking class, a boat tour along the coast, or simply some time spent on the beach.
Day 8: Depart
As you can see, a week-long Amalfi Coast honeymoon can pass by easily!
Remember, an Amalfi Coast honeymoon is not to be rushed. Its charm unfolds slowly, and part of the joy is in lingering over a cappuccino with a view, meandering through lemon groves, or simply watching the sunset from a seafront terrace.
Allow yourself the time to embrace la dolce vita that this Italian paradise embodies!
How do we get to the Amalfi Coast?
Naples (airport code: NAP) is the gateway to your Amalfi Coast honeymoon. From there, you have several options to continue your journey to the Amalfi Coast:
Take a shuttle bus or taxi from the airport to Napoli Centrale train station. From there, you can catch a train to Sorrento (the western gateway to the Amalfi Coast) or Salerno (on the eastern end of the coast).
The Circumvesuviana train runs from Naples to Sorrento and is a popular choice for couples heading to the western towns on the coast.
From Sorrento, you can take the SITA Sud bus directly to towns like Positano and Amalfi.
From Salerno, there are also SITA buses to Amalfi and other towns.
Alternatively, especially during the summer months, you can opt for a ferry from various points along the coast.
You could also choose car hire but our favourite stress-free, albeit more expensive option, is to book a private transfer and remove the faff of trains and buses
For a truly luxurious arrival, some luxury Amalfi Coast honeymoon hotels offer helicopter transfers from Naples.
Do we need a visa for Italy?
EU passport holders can travel freely in Italy.
UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025.
Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa. If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.
Do we need travel vaccinations for Italy?
Italy is a malaria-free and Zika-free honeymoon destination.
Some travel vaccinations may be recommended.
We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor specialising in travel.
How do we get around the Amalfi Coast?
Getting around on your Amalfi Coast honeymoon is part of the adventure!
While car hire might seem like an obvious option, it’s our least favourite way to get around on an Amalfi Coast honeymoon.
The main road, the SS163, known as the Amalfi Drive, is famous for its breathtaking views and hairpin turns. It’s an experience in itself but can be challenging for those not accustomed to such driving conditions.
The roads are narrow, winding and often congested, and parking is scarce and expensive. If you’re comfortable with the driving conditions, opt for a scooter rental instead.
The SITA Sud bus service is the main public transportation system connecting the towns along the Amalfi Coast.
It’s cost-effective and offers a scenic route, but it can be crowded, especially during peak season, and schedules can be subject to traffic delays. If you suffer from motion sickness, avoid it!
The ferry service is a splendid way to travel between towns, offering a breezy reprieve from the winding roads.
Services connect the key coastal towns and also provide links to the islands of Capri and Ischia. The views from the sea are unmatched, and during high season, ferries are frequent.
You can also book a private driver for the day (if you’re not travelling on a tighter budget!)
Many of the towns are best explored on foot due to their compact size and pedestrian zones. Walking is also the only way to access some of the most charming streets, which are often stairways carved into the hillside.
Plan your travel around the coast with the understanding that journeys may take longer than expected due to the terrain and traffic.
Is an Amalfi Coast honeymoon package expensive?
Let’s be frank, an Amalfi Coast honeymoon is considered one of the more expensive in Europe, particularly during the peak tourist season from June to September.
The combination of its stunning natural beauty, high demand, and relatively limited space contributes to its premium pricing.
You can save by travelling during the shoulder months but even then you couldn’t define it as cheap. If you’re travelling on a budget, opt to stay in Sorrento.
Should we use a travel agent to book an Amalfi Coast honeymoon?
A good, reputable travel agent or tour operator who books Amalfi Coast honeymoons regularly will usually have all the insider information and may have preferential rates, so it’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent.
However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Amalfi Coast honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.
You can book all the extras easily. We book trains with Trainline and Omio. Ferries with Ferry Hopper and tours and excursions with GetYourGuide or Viator.
When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change aeroplanes.
We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience, if travelling on one ticket.
Give yourself plenty of time for transfers and trains, too, although we’ve always found Italian trains to be reliable.
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!
What about travel insurance?
Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.
If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.
World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.
What should we pack for an Amalfi Coast honeymoon?
Packing for an Amalfi Coast honeymoon should blend practicality with a touch of glamour.
Include a mix of casual, chic outfits. For daytime, think sun dresses, shorts, and t-shirts. Evenings call for your best attire – a lovely dress or a smart shirt and trousers. Don’t forget swimwear for those beach days.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring. Sandals are perfect for the beach, but the streets are cobblestones so practicality is essential. Maybe leave the stilettos at home.
Sunglasses, a hat, a beach bag and plenty of SPF to protect your skin from the Mediterranean sun are essentials.
Get packing for your Amalfi Coast honeymoon with our free Italy packing list!
Should we bring cash / should we tip in Amalfi Coast?
Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, resorts and shops on the Amalfi Coast and there are ATMs everywhere.
It’s a good idea to have some euro on hand for smaller purchases.
Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated. 10% for service staff is a good rule of thumb, as is rounding up other services.
Where can we tag on to the Amalfi Coast for a multi-destination honeymoon?
As you can see you could spend your whole honeymoon exploring the Amalfi Coast but there are other spots in Italy to explore!
You can easily take the train from Napoli Centrale station to Rome, Florence or even Milan or Venice. The high speed rail network makes it easy to combine other areas of Italy.
Can’t choose between an Italy and Greece honeymoon? The good news is you don’t have to!
You can combine Italy with a heavenly Greek island hop if you have time.
Naples is well connected to honeymoon hot spots like Santorini and other stunning Greek islands like Mykonos and ruggedly beautiful Crete to name a few. A Santorini and Amalfi Coast honeymoon is one of our ultimate multi-destination honeymoons.
In fact, you can actually combine almost anywhere in Europe to your Amalfi Coast honeymoon as Naples (and Rome) have so many connections to other European honeymoon destinations.
From Dublin to London, Paris to Madrid, Barcelona to Valletta – you can let your imagination run wild if you have more time!
Things to consider before booking an Amalfi Coast honeymoon
While we love to recommend a honeymoon in Amalfi Coast, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!
- Over Tourism: The Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular areas. The tiny villages and towns are packed and the crowds dial down the romance. If you can, book a hotel where you can escape the crowds.
- Cost: The Amalfi Coast is undeniably an expensive destination, with high costs for accommodation and dining compared to other parts of Italy, which might not suit your budget.
- Beaches: The Amalfi Coast does have beaches but they are mostly black sand and usually packed with people. If you’re seeking a tropical white sand vibe, unfortunately you won’t find them on the volcanic landscapes of the Amalfi Coast!
