Italy Honeymoon Itinerary Planning Frequently Asked Questions

Is Italy good for a honeymoon?

Absolutely! Italy truly is the premier league of honeymoon destinations. Romance, culture, food, history, and natural beauty.

The toughest part of planning an Italy honeymoon itinerary is choosing which places to keep and which places to leave out!

What’s the best time to visit Italy for a honeymoon?

The best time for an Italian honeymoon is from April to early June and September to October, when the weather is pleasant, and tourist crowds are thinner.

July and August are the peak time to travel and this time of year is more expensive, more crowded and gets pretty hot. If you can avoid these months, we’d recommend it.

From November to March, the weather is cooler. It’s a great time to explore the beautiful Italian cities for culture, history and gastronomy but expect some rain. In winter, you can go skiing in the Italian Alps, too.

Discover the best time to visit Italy – month by month.

How long should we stay in Italy on honeymoon

The longest time possible! As you can see from our selection of 10 night Italy honeymoon itinerary ideas, there are many options to choose from.

The ideal duration depends on your preferences and budget. A 10-night Italy honeymoon itinerary provides a good mix of experiences with a chance to relax, too.

However, you can adjust the duration to suit your needs. If you have 7 nights, pick two destinations. If you have 10 nights, pick three. If you have 14 nights, pick 4.

Remember that 3 nights will only give you 2 full days and 4 nights is 3 full days and so on.

Don’t underestimate jet lag if you’re flying from afar.

How do we get to Italy?

The biggest international airports in Italy are Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, Venice Marco Polo, Naples and Bologna.

There are a further 30 regional airports with domestic and European flight services.

There are also train services around Europe. So you can choose the one that best suits your itinerary.

Do we need a visa for Italy?

EU passport holders can travel freely in Italy.

UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025.

Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa.

If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.

Do we need travel vaccinations for Italy?

Italy is a malaria-free and Zika free honeymoon destination.

Some travel vaccinations may be needed.

We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor specialising in travel medicine.

Is a honeymoon in Italy expensive?

Italy can be both budget-friendly and luxurious, depending on your choices.

You can find everything from affordable boltholes to the most lux hotels on the planet. Feast on street food or indulge in fine dining at Michelin star restaurants.

If you can travel outside of the peak summer months, accommodation will be much cheaper.

Should we use a travel agent to book a honeymoon in Italy?

A good travel agent who books Italy regularly will usually have a direct relationship with hotels and vendors in the country.

This means they may have preferential rates, so it’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent.

Using a travel agent can be beneficial

However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Italy honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com. You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.

You can book transport easily, along with tours and excursions on GetYourGuide or Viator. Book car hire on RentalCars.com

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change airplanes.

We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover, if travelling on one ticket, for a stress-free experience.

Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

What about travel insurance?

Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon. If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.

World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.

However, there are many destinations you can tag on to an Italian honeymoon itinerary!

Italy is well-connected to neighbouring countries like Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, making it easy to extend your Italy honeymoon itinerary to other destinations by train.

Italy Honeymoon Planning Tips

Don’t Over Plan

We totally get the urge to squeeze in as many destinations as possible on to your Italy honeymoon itinerary, but remember it’s your honeymoon, and you want to have time for each other, not rushing to the next destination every day.

Two nights in one location typically translate to one full day of exploration, and it’s easy to underestimate the time spent travelling between destinations.

Packing up, checking out, trains, transfers, driving and then checking in and unpacking again can really eat into your time. Strike a harmonious balance between exploration and relaxation.

Don’t over plan. In the land of La Dolce Vita, leave room for spontaneity and serendipity!

Learn Basic Italian Phrases:

You don’t need to learn Italian to travel through Italy. These days you have Google Translate (which you can make available offline).

However, while many Italians in tourist areas speak English, learning a few basic Italian phrases can enhance your experience and make interactions more enjoyable.

Plus, it’s always fun to learn a new language if you have time.

Transport

Italy has an extensive and efficient train system. Consider using trains for intercity travel as they can be faster and more convenient than driving. Book online early to get the best prices.

Driving

Driving in Italy as a foreigner can be an adventure in itself. Italian drivers are assertive, and traffic in cities can be chaotic. Stay calm and be patient.

Driving in the Italian Riviera and Amalfi Coast is challenging. Either hire a driver or take public transport unless you’re used to extremely narrow, slow, curvy and steep roads in a foreign country.

Reserve Museum Tickets

There is no doubt you’ll be adding incredible museums to your Italy honeymoon itinerary.

Book tickets online and use skip-the-line passes to avoid long queues. If you can, visit museums and galleries as soon as they open in the morning when crowds are a little thinner.

Safety

Italy is generally safe for tourists, but be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas. Keep your belongings secure and be aware of your surroundings.

Cash & Tipping

Credit cards are widely accepted in Italy, but it’s a good idea to have some euro on hand for smaller purchases. Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated.
