What to know about the weather in Italy

You’re dreaming about La Dolce Vita, the moment you finally land on those legendary shores. But what will the weather be like?

When you’re thinking about what to pack for Italy, the weather should be front and centre in your considerations. Here is a little guide on what to expect.

Spring (March to May):

Spring in Italy is marked by gradually warming temperatures and increased sunshine. March can still be a bit cool, especially in the north, but by May, the entire country usually enjoys mild to warm conditions.

This season sees Italy start to bloom, with countryside landscapes and city gardens coming to life. Light layers are advisable, as temperatures can vary.

Summer (June to August):

Italian summers are typically hot and sunny, especially in the southern regions and major cities like Rome, Florence, and Milan. Temperatures often soar above 30°C (86°F) and in recent years, the country has seen oppressive heat waves.

Coastal areas like the Amalfi Coast, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily offer sea breezes that provide some respite from the heat. Light, breathable clothing is recommended, along with high factor sun protection.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn sees a gradual cooling from the summer heat, with September and even into October are still quite warm. As the season progresses, temperatures drop, especially in the north and in mountainous areas.

Later in autumn is unpredictable, sunny days may swiftly change to rain. Layered clothing is ideal, allowing for adjustments to the variable weather.

Winter (December to February):

Winters in Italy are generally mild in the coastal regions but can be quite cold in the north, especially in the Alps and Dolomites, where snow is common.

Central and southern regions experience milder winters, though it can still be chilly with occasional rain. Warm clothing and a good coat are essential for winter travel in Italy, especially if you plan to visit northern areas or engage in winter sports.

Overall, Italy’s climate varies significantly from north to south and from coastal to inland areas. Consider the specific regions you plan to visit when you’re finalising your Italy packing list.

The things you shouldn’t add to your Italy Packing List

When packing for a honeymoon in Italy, it’s just as important to know what to leave behind as it is to know what to bring.

Don’t over pack as many items can be purchased in Italian cities if you’re stuck for something.

Laundromats do exist in big towns and cities (although we don’t want you to waste a minute of your Italian honeymoon doing laundry) so pack smart to avoid paying huge hotel fees to dry clean clothes.

Here are some things to leave behind:

Warm Clothes – Leave heavy clothing off your Italy packing list if you’re travelling in summer. The warm Mediterranean climate means you won’t need thick clothing like jeans or jumpers.

However, if you’re planning on hiking in the Dolomites or sailing, a warm layer is recommended.

High Heeled Shoes – Italy is the original home of the stiletto but if your Italian honeymoon is about exploring, then leave any potentially uncomfortable shoes off your Italy packing list.

You may take a taxi to a chic restaurant at night in Rome, but if you’re staying in an agriturismo in Tuscany or climbing the cobblestone steps of the Amalfi Coast, or walking all day around the museums of Florence, then high heels are less practical.

Gadgets – While your camera, e-reader, smartphone (or even your drone) might be essential items on your Italy packing list, avoid overloading your luggage with too many electronic devices.

Embrace the chance to explore and immerse yourself in the culture and history of Italy.

Too many makeup products – If you’re travelling in summer, Italy is hot so heavy makeup may not last very long so pack your most pared back look.

Expensive jewellery – Although you want to wear your engagement and wedding rings – make sure they’re not loose! Consider leaving other expensive jewellery at home to avoid any mishaps.

Single-use plastics – In an effort to reduce your carbon footprint and make your Italy honeymoon sustainable – consider reducing the use of single-use plastics in your packing. Opt for reusable items where possible.

Now it’s time to get packed with the Ultimate Italy Packing List!

The Ultimate Italy Packing List

Essentials

EU passport holders can travel freely in Italy. UK, US, Canadian, New Zealand & Australia passport holders will need an ETIAS visa waiver from 2025. Other passport holders may need a Schengen visa. If you need help to get a visa, check out iVisa.com.

Most documents are electronic now, so make sure you have your boarding pass or e-ticket on your phone along with your transport, hotel and tour confirmations.

Some travel vaccinations are recommended for Italy. We encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a doctor.

The currency is the Euro. Credit Cards are widely accepted in Italy but you may want some euros for smaller towns and smaller local shops.

Let your bank know you’re travelling and check if there is anything you need to do to avoid issues using your card abroad. You can get euros before you leave or take out cash at ATMs.

Tipping is not compulsory in Italy, however it is appreciated. Add an extra 10% to your bill and round up taxi fares.

Clothing & Accessories

It probably goes without saying that Italy is one of the homes of high fashion and Italians appreciate aesthetics.

However, an Italian honeymoon is usually all about exploring so you’ll also want to think about your own comfort when planning your Italy packing list.

‘Bella Figura’ is a thing in Italy which some attach to just looking good but it also means making a good impression or presenting oneself in an elegant way in social and public situations. So for example, you don’t want to rock into a church with a tank top and mini skirt.

Think about style AND comfort if you want to slide right into La Dolce Vita.

What clothes to bring will depend on what time of year you’re travelling and what activities you plan on doing, too. But don’t worry, our Italy packing list has you covered for every eventuality – whether it’s skiing in the Italian Alps or enjoying the stunning beaches of Sardinia.

Italy is one of the most fun places to shop. Whether you’re a high fashion couple and can’t wait to hit the Gucci flagship or like to keep it more modest in H&M or similar, when you’re planning your Italy packing list, think about travelling light as you might pick up some pieces locally.

For exploring by day, light yet comfortable dresses (maxi dresses are great) or trousers, shorts or skirts and t-shirts. Add some chic light summer dresses and playsuits to your Italy packing list for evenings.

Hitting the beach? Pack plenty of shorts, tops and swimwear. Don’t forget a sun hat and a chic beach bag (we love this cute monogrammed one). The Mediterranean sun is hot so consider covering up with a rashguard during the day.

We love our Dock and Bay quick-dry towels which are compact and come in an array of cute striped colours that fit in great with the lines of umbrellas on the Amalfi Coast for that perfect Italy honeymoon insta moment.

Sunglasses are an essential addition to your Italy packing list. We mentioned that you should leave the heels at home, and while Italians don’t run around in flip flops/thongs or sliders except at the beach, some comfy yet stylish and cute sandals or sneakers or tennis shoes are ideal.

You may also want to go hiking, so decent hiking boots or more practical footwear is an essential addition to your Italy packing list.

A light rain jacket is a good idea. We love our waterproof jacket from Danish brand Rains, as the material is so soft.

A practical day backpack or cross body bag is essential to fit in all your essentials when you’re out exploring. Italian cities have a problem with pickpockets so make sure whatever bag you bring is secure.

Pack some comfy clothes for the plane — athleisure wear, sneakers, scarves, socks.

If you’re a gym lovers you may want to bring your workout gear for the hotel gym or want to go for a heavenly jog, somewhere like Villa Borghese in Rome.

Personal Care

Personal care is just that, personal! So take what you need from this section to add to your Italy packing list.

For example, you may love your own hair dryer, but if you’re staying in a half decent hotel they will have one, so there may not be a need to bring your own. If you do, remember that you might need a power converter if you’re coming from a destination with low voltage (like the USA).

One of the most important things to add to your Italy packing list is sunscreen. Sun Bum is our top pick.

If you haven’t got a hanging toiletries travel bag, then get one now. We can’t live without these super handy bags that just hang on the back of a door.

Healthcare

Healthcare is another personal aspect of packing for Italy, so add what you need.

It’s essential to have travel insurance in place when you’re travelling. We don’t want to sound gloomy, but you need cover in case you fall seriously ill.

If you don’t have travel insurance, check out World Nomads to learn more.

World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.

Mosquitoes hang around in summer, even in cities. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has warned of an increasing risk of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe.

If you’re prone to mosquito bites, some anti mosquito protection such as Avon Skin So Soft Dry Oil, a Bite Pen, and insect repellent bracelets is a good idea.

It’s unlikely you’ll fall ill from food borne diseases in Italy but when travelling, a change of food and water can cause an upset stomach so some medication on your Italy packing list can be a good idea so you don’t need to try and converse in Italian with a pharmacist.

  • Contraception / Birth Control
  • Vitamins & Supplements
  • Bandaids
  • Pain relief – aspirin/paracetamol
  • Hand Sanitiser/Antibacterial wipes
  • Insect repellent / DEET / Bite Pen
  • Travel sickness medication
  • Antihistamine
  • Anti-diarrheal
  • Prescription medications
  • Contact lenses/glasses

Cosmetics

Italy in summer is hot so we’d really recommend only bringing your most paired-down look.  Plus, you can always buy make up products there if you need with favourites like Sephora available in the big cities.

Whatever your make up routine, our Italy packing list make up section will ensure you don’t forget to add your favourite products:

  • Make-up Bag
  • Micellar Water
  • Primers
  • Foundation
  • Concealer
  • Highlighter
  • Contour
  • Powder
  • Blushes
  • Eyeshadows
  • Eye Liners
  • Mascara
  • Brow products
  • Lip Liner, Lipsticks & Lipgloss
  • Make-up Brushes

Electronics

Italy uses EU standard plug type C so a universal travel plug adapter is an essential addition to your Italy packing list. This one with USB connections is super handy.

Many couples just use their smartphone for photography but Italy is one of the most photogenic honeymoon destinations in the world so if you have a camera, bring it. We have the Sony ZV1

If you’re going to be at the beach, then a waterproof phone cover will be a good addition to your Italy packing list, too.

Selfie sticks may feel a little silly but we still think it’s the best way to get that perfect insta image without getting other people involved at iconic sites like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If you want to feel less conspicuous opt for a Gorilla Pod instead.

Thinking about bringing a drone and living your best influencer life? For beginners, consider investing in a DJI Mini.

Add your Apple AirPods or your favourite headphones to your Italy packing list.

Physical books are our favourite so bring at least one must-read for days when you’re on trains or by the beach or pool. However, if you’re voracious readers like us, then load up your Kindle with all the books you’ve been meaning to read.

If you have a lot of cables, then consider this chic travel case to keep them tidy.

  • Universal plug adapters
  • Camera + SD cards + battery/ charger
  • Drone + SD + battery / charger
  • Selfie Stick or Gorilla Pod
  • Smartwatch + charger
  • Phone + charger + power bank
  • Headphones
  • Laptop or Tablet + charger
  • E-Reader + charger
  • Travel speakers + charger

Miscellaneous

All the other things you may or may not need!

Should you bring a suitcase or a backpack to Italy? If you’re planning a more luxurious trip with car transfers, then a suitcase is absolutely fine.

If you’re planning a more backpacking style trip using local transport then a backpack might be better. Although, even with hopping on and off trains, suitcases are fine, too.

We love our classic hard shell luggage from Samsonite. Don’t forget an Apple AirTag, the best luggage tracker to add to your Italy packing list (in case the worst happens!).

We’re total over packers however an Italy honeymoon often means moving around so you’ll want to stay organised so for us packing cubes on this kind of trip are essential. They’re great if you want to compartmentalise and save you from having to unpack everything every time you get to a new city or town. Don’t forget TSA approved locks for your luggage.

If you’re going to the beach, a dry bag can be handy to keep any essentials away from the water.

  • Suitcases
  • Air Tag / Luggage Tracker
  • Packing Cubes
  • Landry Bag
  • Luggage locks
  • Sewing kit
  • Fans
  • Pens / Notebook or Honeymoon Journal
  • Dry Bag
  • Wet bag

For the flight

  • Travel blanket / Pillow – we have this 2 in 1 blanket and pillow which we love and it just slips on to your cabin suitcase.
  • Eye Mask
  • Ear plugs
  • Flight Socks
  • Deck of cards
  • Kindle, Books or Magazines
  • Snacks

Sustainable Italy packing list tips

To make your Italian honeymoon more sustainable – consider reducing the number of single-use plastics in your Italy packing list.

Tap water is generally safe to drink in Italy. Bottled water is available everywhere and there are some water fountains in cities.

If you’re concerned about the tap water, it means you’ll have to purchase a lot of plastic bottles. If you’re concerned about water quality a water filtration and purification travel bottle like Grayl is a godsend.
