Best time to visit Tanzania for honeymoon
The best time to visit Tanzania for a honeymoon is from late June to October when the weather it’s at its driest.
It’s the optimum time for game viewing. The best time to visit also coincides with the best time to see the Great Migration too.
From January to February there is a shorter hot, dry period called the Green Season. This is a really interesting time to visit as it’s calving season so you’ve a chance to see younger animals.
While November and December can bring some showers. The worst time to visit Tanzania is from late March to early June.
This is when the ‘long rains’ arrive and the wildlife viewing is not at its best because of the long grasses and road can be muddy. It’s also wetter in the beach areas.

How to get around Tanzania
Most couples planning a Tanzania honeymoon will opt for a safari tour that takes in several stops, over several nights.
As you move from lodge to lodge and park to park, you’ll cross the savannah and take game drives in between. You can book a private tour with just the two of you and a driver/ranger or a small group tour.
Another option for a shorter Tanzania honeymoon is a fly-in safari with some of the most luxurious lodges and tented camps.
This option is ideal for couples who don’t have much time with a bigger budget where you can fly to the lodge / camp and spend a few days taking game drives from your accommodation without moving.
When you arrive in Tanzania, there will usually be at least one or two domestic flights on light aircraft.
Can you do a self drive Tanzania? Planning a Tanzania honeymoon road trip is unusual. Unless you have experience driving in the wilderness in Africa, we would not recommend it.
The expertise and reassurance of a guide is invaluable. Not only are you getting their knowledge built up over years, but you are also supporting local jobs, the jobs of the people who protect the precious wildlife from poaching and destruction.

Best Tanzania Honeymoon Safari Destinations
There are 22 national parks in Tanzania and even more game reserves.
Below, we’ve included the most popular Tanzania honeymoon safari destinations and included a few off-the-beaten-track options that are worth considering!
Serengeti National Park
Iconic and expansive, and probably needing no introduction, the Serengeti is synonymous with classic African safaris.
Its endless plains in northern Tanzania are the stage for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras make their epic journey from the southern Serengeti to northern Serengeti into the Maasai Mara Reserve in Kenya in a clockwise loop.
Beyond this spectacle, the Serengeti is teeming with wildlife, offering some of the best game viewing opportunities for a Tanzania honeymoon.
Ngorongoro Crater
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is a natural wonder, home to one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa and a true Tanzania honeymoon highlight.
This volcanic caldera offers an unparalleled opportunity to see the Big Five in a relatively small area.
The stunning vistas from the crater rim and the chance to witness the delicate balance of predator and prey interactions on the crater floor make it a must-visit.
Lake Manyara National Park
Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions, vast elephant herds, and flamingo-dotted lake.
The park’s diverse landscape, ranging from savannah to marshland, makes it a haven for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts alike.
Its compact size makes it ideal for a day trip, too.

Tarangire National Park
Famous for its large herds of elephants and majestic baobab trees, Tarangire is often overlooked, but incredibly rewarding.
During the dry season, the Tarangire River becomes a magnet for wildlife, offering spectacular game viewing.
Nyerere National Park
Formerly known as Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park in southern Tanzania is known for its riverine wilderness and large populations of elephants, wild dogs, and crocodiles.
Nyerere will be a remote and unspoiled Tanzania honeymoon safari experience.
It’s one of the few places where boat safaris are possible, providing a unique perspective on Africa’s wildlife and landscapes.
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha, with its rugged terrain and wild beauty, is a paradise for those seeking a more adventurous Tanzania honeymoon safari.
It’s known for its large elephant population, diverse bird species, and predators like lions and cheetahs.
The remote location means fewer visitors and more authentic wildlife encounters.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park
For couples who want to get off the beaten track on a Tanzania honeymoon, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, known as the ‘Galapagos of Africa‘ for its biodiversity.
A hiker’s paradise, it’s a haven for endemic species and a hotspot for birdwatchers, with numerous trails leading through tropical rainforests to stunning waterfalls.
Saadani National Park
As the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the ocean, Saadani offers a unique blend of beach and bush.
Couples can enjoy traditional safari game drives, boat safaris on the Wami River, and explore pristine wild beaches.
Safari Accommodation Options
Tanzania has a spectrum of accommodation, from rustic to luxurious. You can stay in a tented camp, intimate lodges, a mobile migration camp, there is something to suit every couple.
A safari lodge is usually a concrete structure / building made of stone or wood. A tented camp is made of safari tents. Both accommodation types range from basic to ultra luxury.
For couples who are adventurous and/or on a smaller budget and are planning a Tanzania honeymoon, consider a small group camping adventure.
G Adventures also have of their wonderful National Geographic Tours for a deep immersion in Tanzanian culture.
On the other end of the scale, you’ll also find the most luxurious tented camps and lodges in Africa such as Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti or One Nature Nyaruswiga Serengeti.
We also can’t get enough of the unique Tent With A View safaris where you can stay in a mobile camp Land Rover that drives through the Serengeti and other parks and converts into a hotel room suite at night.
Or, Nomad Safaris, who also takes you to remote destinations away from the tourist crowds. Pure magic.
A Tanzania safari honeymoon will include meals on a full board basis (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). Drinks may cost extra depending on the standard of camp or lodge.

Things to do on a Tanzania honeymoon
Big 5 Safari
The incredible spectacle of the Big 5 and seeing the big cats is the reason you’re planning a Tanzania honeymoon safari and is, of course, the top of the list when it comes to things to do on a Tanzania honeymoon!
It’s the best place in Africa for wildlife safaris (or certainly, one of them!)
It will leave you in awe. The Big 5 refers to lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo, but you’ll also have a chance to see giraffe, zebra, cheetah, wildebeests and gazelle. Abundant bird life is another highlight.
One thing to remember is that Tanzania is wild, so there is never a guarantee of seeing every animal species that inhabits the region – you have to take what you get! Animal species will vary from park to park.
Generally, you will have two game drives per day, early morning and late afternoon.
These can be shared with other travellers or private with just the two of you and your driver/guide/ranger.
You’ll have opportunities to ask questions and get a unique insight into the wild animals of Tanzania. Expect to be up very early for the best opportunity to see wildlife.
In the morning, you’ll be wrapped in blankets. In the afternoon enjoy sundowner drinks in the bush.
Night Safari Walks
For a different perspective on the wilderness, night time walking safaris are a must-try.
Under the African night sky, illuminated by stars, the bush comes alive with nocturnal creatures.
Guided by experienced rangers, these walks offer a chance to encounter animals like bush babies, owls, and maybe even the elusive leopard, adding an incredible chapter to your Tanzania safari honeymoon tale.
Witness the Great Migration
The Great Migration happens across Tanzania and Kenya when 2.5 million animals – wildebeests, zebra and gazelle are on the move through the savannah in a cyclical pattern, creating one of the most unique wildlife experiences on the planet.
While many couples may opt for a standard safari, if an opportunity arises in your plans to see this incredible display, we cannot recommend it enough.
A highlight of any Tanzania honeymoon adventure is the Great Migration.
If you want to know more, National Geographic has this fantastic feature that we highly recommend you read before you make any definite honeymoon plans or bookings.
Hot-Air Balloon Ride
For a panoramic view of Tanzania’s sprawling landscapes, a hot air balloon ride at dawn is nothing short of iconic.
Floating over the vast plains of the Serengeti or Tarangire, you’ll witness the sunrise painting the sky in hues of orange and gold, while the wildlife begins its daily routines below.
It’s one of the planet’s best bucket list romantic experiences and a must add to your Tanzania honeymoon safari itinerary.
Visiting Local Communities
Engaging with local communities and tribes like the Chagga, Maasai, Hadzabe, or Datoga, will be a rewarding cultural experience.
Partake in traditional ceremonies, learn about ancient ways of living harmoniously with nature, and understand the local customs and languages.
Exploring the deep-rooted heritage of the country is a must on your Tanzania honeymoon.
Bird Watching
With over 1,100 bird species, Tanzania is a birdwatcher’s paradise.
While most couples come for the mammals, national parks like Lake Manyara are renowned for their avian diversity.
From the vibrantly coloured lilac-breasted roller to large birds of prey to the pink spectacle that is a flamboyance of flamingos, the variety is staggering!

Hike Mount Kilimanjaro
Hiking to the summit of Africa’s tallest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro is a bucket list trip for intrepid couples.
However, as the highest mountain on the continent, it is a pretty challenging physical activity, so if you’re heading off on honeymoon immediately after your wedding, we probably wouldn’t recommend it.
However, if you’re planning a latermoon, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is certainly a memorable travel and honeymoon experience to add to your Tanzania honeymoon itinerary.
There are 4 routes:
- Marangu Route: Often called the “Coca-Cola” route, Marangu is the most established and easiest in terms of gradient, featuring hut accommodations, making it a comfortable choice for climbers.
- Machame Route: Known as the “Whiskey” route, Machame is more challenging and scenic than Marangu, offering stunning views and a higher success rate, but requires camping.
- Lemosho Route: Lemosho is a longer, more remote route known for its beauty, lower traffic, and higher success rates, making it ideal for those seeking a more serene climb.
- Rongai Route: The only route approaching from the north, Rongai is less crowded and offers a more gradual climb, but with fewer scenic vistas compared to the other routes.
Around Kilimanjaro’s towns of Arusha and Moshi, you’ll find other hikes, waterfalls, hot springs and coffee tours so even if you don’t want to take the famous routes to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, there is quite a bit too for couples with more time.
Tanzania Beach Honeymoon in Zanzibar
Off the coast of East Africa, the Zanzibar Archipelago is a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean, famed for its stunning beaches.
In fact, you’ll find the best beaches in Africa here, ideal for an unforgettable honeymoon finale!
Its crown jewel, Unguja, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, enchants couples with its palm trees, dazzling white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.
Steeped in history, Zanzibar’s capital Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a captivating maze of narrow alleys, grand palaces, and ancient forts, reflecting a blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European influences.
This centuries-old port capital is one of East Africa’s most intriguing cultural treasures.
Zanzibar has an array of honeymoon luxurious accommodations to suit most budgets. One of our top picks is Baraza Resort and Spa.
The combination of safari and beach is just heaven.
From all-inclusive honeymoon options to boutique boltholes, Zanzibar is the perfect post safari honeymoon vibe.
You can go scuba diving and snorkelling and do water sports.
Go island hopping to neighbouring islands like Pemba island and Mafia island and explore the Rock and Prison Island.
Zanzibar is also the perfect place to just relax by the pool, enjoy spa treatments and amazing views with the most stunning sunsets.
Conveniently connected, Zanzibar is accessible via flights from Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam, Arusha/Kilimanjaro Airports, allowing you to seamlessly combine a Tanzania honeymoon safari with a relaxing beach escape.
Zanzibar is a must add on to your Tanzania honeymoon itinerary.
We have a dedicated Zanzibar planning guide, too!

Tanzania Honeymoon Frequently asked questions
Is Tanzania good for a honeymoon?
A Tanzania honeymoon won’t be just good, it will be extraordinary!
The diversity of experiences, from thrilling wildlife encounters to serene hot air balloon safaris at dawn and stunning beaches are unmatched.
Tanzania will be truly captivating.
Is Tanzania safe for a honeymoon?
Tanzania is generally considered a safe honeymoon destination.
It is one of the most popular destinations in Africa and is known for its welcoming people and professional tourism industry.
However, like any travel destination, it’s important to take certain precautions and be aware of local conditions.
Safaris are typically very safe, especially when you adhere to the guidelines provided by experienced guides and rangers.
Respect local customs and laws. Dress conservatively outside of beach resorts.
In cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha, exercise typical urban safety measures—avoid isolated areas, especially at night, and be cautious with valuables.
Is Tanzania safe for LGBTQ+ couples?
Unfortunately, when it comes to equality for LGBTQ+ people, Tanzania has yet to join us in the 21st century and homosexuality is ‘illegal’.
Many LGBTQ+ couples will visit East Africa on honeymoon and avoid drawing any attention to themselves by avoiding public displays of affection.
Tanzania is conservative for everyone compared to some parts of Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas, so we’d recommend even heterosexual couples who are inclined to public displays of affection to be conscious of local sensibilities.
However, we know many couples do not want to hide who they are while on their honeymoon.
So if this is the case for you, we’d recommend choosing a more LGBTQ+ friendly honeymoon destination like South Africa.
How long should we stay in Tanzania for our honeymoon?
The ideal duration for a Tanzania honeymoon depends on several factors, including your interests, the pace at which you want to travel, and your budget.
However, the typical duration of a Tanzania honeymoon is between 10 to 14 days.
This allows enough time to experience a diverse range of activities including at least a few days on safari with some added beach time.
If you stay for longer, it will give you time to explore some of the off-the-beaten-track national parks.
Remember, when planning your Tanzania honeymoon itinerary, 2 nights will only give you 1 full day to explore/relax, 3 nights = 2 full days, 4 nights = 3 full days, 7 nights = 6 full days, and so on.
The quality of your experience matters more than the quantity of days. Prioritise what’s most important to you both as a couple, and plan your itinerary around those key experiences!
Don’t underestimate travel days.
How do we get to Tanzania?
The biggest city in Tanzania is Dar Es Salaam (airport code: DAR). but there are also multiple international flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
You can fly via the Middle East hubs like Dubai (DXB) in the United Arab Emirates with Emirates, Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines, and Doha (DOH) with Qatar Airways and some European cities too.
However, it’s also worth checking out flights to Kenya’s nearby capital Nairobi (NBO).
The jump-off points for a Tanzania safari honeymoon are usually Kilimanjaro (JRO), Arusha (ARK) or Mwanza (MWZ) on the shores of Lake Victoria.
Once you arrive in Kilimanjaro, Dar Es Salaam or Nairobi, you might need to take a short flight to an airstrip, unless you’re travelling overland, which can take hours.
There are also international flights to and from Zanzibar (ZNZ).
Do we need a visa for Tanzania?
Most nationalities can enter Tanzania on an e-visa (available from iVisa.com).
You will need 6 months of validity left on your passport and two blank pages.
Do we need vaccinations for Tanzania?
There is a risk of malaria and Zika virus in Tanzania. A Yellow Fever vaccination may be required.
Other travel vaccinations are recommended.
We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a Tropical Medicine Specialist.
Is a Tanzania honeymoon package expensive?
The cost of a Tanzania honeymoon is not cheap and can stretch into five figures once flights are added.
However, it depends on the type of experiences and accommodations you choose, when you go, and how soon you book.
Luxury lodges and exclusive safari experiences, like hot-air balloon rides or private game drives, add to the cost.
If you’re planning a budget honeymoon, then you might consider a small group tour and splashing out on the beach stay.
It’s also worth considering the cost of flights to and from Tanzania, visas, vaccinations, and travel insurance, all of which can add to the overall expense.
While a Tanzania honeymoon will be unforgettable, it is typically not categorised as a budget-friendly honeymoon option.
Should we use a travel agent to book a Tanzania honeymoon?
It can be tricky to arrange moving from one place to another, so we highly recommend opting for a specialised safari tour operator via a trusted travel agent who will create a Tanzania safari honeymoon package.
They’ll handle all the nitty-gritty details, from park permits to game drives. Plus, they often have insider access to places and experiences you won’t find in a guidebook.
The early bird catches the best safari deals! We recommend starting your planning at least 9-12 months in advance if you can.
Consider asking your safari tour operator about their conservation efforts. Choosing an ethical company that supports local conservation efforts is a great way to make your $/€/£ make a difference.
This is a great way to make your Tanzania safari honeymoon more sustainable.
If you prefer to book a D-I-Y Tanzania honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com.
You can book transfers, tours, and excursions through your accommodation. We would recommend booking these before arrival.
When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change aeroplanes.
We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover (if travelling on one ticket) for a stress-free experience.
Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!
What about travel insurance?
Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount when you’re planning a Tanzania honeymoon itinerary.
It’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.
If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.
World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.
What should we pack for a Tanzania honeymoon?
Think comfort meets safari style! Neutral colours are ideal in the bush — khakis, greens, and browns. Don’t wear bright colours, blues, or blacks. No camouflage print.
We’d strongly recommend practical hiking footwear. Make sure you’ve worn your footwear before travel, as you don’t want to break in new shoes in the African wilderness!
We highly recommend investing in insect-repellent clothing. It can really make a difference.
Lightweight, breathable fabrics are a must, and don’t forget a warm layer for those chilly mornings.
Hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and a good pair of binoculars for those up-close encounters with the Big 5 are essential.
Plenty of anti-bug spray and an anti-bite pen. Don’t forget swimwear and sunglasses for the beaches.
Should we bring cash / should we tip in Tanzania?
You’ll find ATMs in the main tourist centres like Arusha. However, they are not available in smaller villages, so exchanging currency is advisable.
While not obligatory, tipping is a way to show appreciation for the hard work that goes into making your safari experience magical and can go a long way in somewhere like Tanzania, where wages are lower.
From your tour guide to the lodge staff, a little extra goes a long way. As a ballpark figure, consider setting aside around $20-30 per day for tips.
Where can we tag on to Tanzania for a multi-destination honeymoon?
As you can see, there is so much to do in Tanzania that you could easily spend your whole honeymoon here.
However, there are some easy additions to a Tanzania honeymoon.
If you want to explore more of Africa, you could combine a safari in the Maasai Mara or a beach stay in neighbouring Kenya, a road trip in South Africa, or gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda.
Nairobi has direct flights to the Seychelles, where you can go on a paradise island hopping adventure or relax by a stunning beach in Mauritius.
They are beautiful alternatives (albeit slightly less convenient) to a Zanzibar beach stay. This might be appealing if you want to tick one of these countries off your bucket list.
Although some couples love the idea of Tanzania with the Maldives, there is no direct flight between these destinations, making it a more expensive multi-destination honeymoon combination (you’d have to fly to the Middle East and back down again).
You could add one of our favourite cities for a honeymoon stop, Dubai. It’s packed full of things to do and luxurious places to stay. Consider Istanbul for an exciting addition to your Tanzania honeymoon.

Things To Consider Before Booking Your Tanzania Honeymoon
While we love to recommend the Tanzania for honeymoon, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!
- Over-Tourism: In the Serengeti, over tourism can lead to environmental degradation, habitat disruption, and wildlife stress.
Increased tourist presence strains local resources, elevates prices, and can diminish the quality of the visitor experience by overcrowding popular sites.
Cultural impacts and economic disparities affect local communities, with the benefits of tourism not always evenly distributed. Consider the conservation efforts of your safari provider and get more off the beaten track to minimise your footprint. - Weather: The weather can be a challenge depending on when you visit. The rainy seasons (particularly from March to May) can make wildlife spotting more difficult and some roads impassable.
- Diversity: Tanzania excels in wildlife safaris and beach honeymoon vacations. However, it lacks the varied landscapes, urban attractions, and adventure tourism options found for example in South Africa. This can be a downside for couples seeking more diverse experiences within a single destination.
