The best time to visit Abu Dhabi for honeymoon

The best time to visit Abu Dhabi for honeymoon is from October to April.

In December, January & February, temperatures are more mild at around 20° C / 70° F. Even in winter, you’re very unlikely to experience a long spell of rain.

From May to September, the weather is hot.

Temperatures reach well over 40° C / 100° F in July and August. If you’re travelling at this time, we’d recommend Dubai instead, as there is a larger array of indoor activities.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi captured at twilight, with its white domes and minarets reflecting the warm glow of the setting sun against a serene sky, and its archways casting golden reflections on the polished courtyard

Abu Dhabi Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions

Is Abu Dhabi good for a honeymoon?

Yes! Abu Dhabi is a great city for a honeymoon stopover.

Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach, do something sporty, cultural, or just something fun, you’ll find it in the capital of the UAE!

Is Abu Dhabi safe for LGBTQ+ couples planning a honeymoon?

Abu Dhabi is a very safe destination when it comes to petty crime. Crime rates are low.

However, unfortunately, when it comes to equality, the United Arab Emirates has yet to join us in the 21st century.

Many LGBTQ+ people live and work in the UAE, and it’s a fun destination for a honeymoon. However, anti-LGBTQ+ laws are not only discriminatory but also harsh.

The United Arab Emirates is conservative for everyone compared to some parts of Europe, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. We’d recommend even heterosexual couples who are inclined to public displays of affection to be conscious of local sensibilities.

Many LGBTQ+ couples will visit Abu Dhabi on honeymoon and avoid drawing any attention to themselves by avoiding public displays of affection.

However, we know many couples do not want to hide who they are while on their honeymoon. So if this is the case for you, we’d recommend choosing a more LGBTQ+ friendly honeymoon destination.

How long should we stay in Abu Dhabi for our honeymoon?

The duration of an Abu Dhabi honeymoon will depend on several factors, including your available time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking to have.

Couples planning an Abu Dhabi honeymoon will usually be stopping over for 3 to 4 nights on the way to somewhere else—either another country or another part of the UAE.

You can, of course, stay longer for a mix of sightseeing and relaxing, as there are some stunning hotels here. You could easily spend a week in the lap of luxury!

We would recommend at least 3 nights for an Abu Dhabi honeymoon stopover, which will give you 2 full days to get a taste of the city’s highlights.

How do we get to Abu Dhabi?

It’s very easy to plan an Abu Dhabi honeymoon no matter where you are in the world.

Etihad, Abu Dhabi’s airline, has a large network, and you can also fly to many major destinations in Europe, Asia, and some eastern US cities to and from Abu Dhabi Airport (airport code: AUH).

You can also fly into Dubai (airport code: DXB), which is around 150km (about a 90-minute drive).

Do we need a visa for Abu Dhabi?

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival in the United Arab Emirates.

If you need help to obtain a visa, check out iVisa.com. You need 6 months of validity left on your passport.

Do we need travel vaccinations for Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates is a malaria-free and Zika-free honeymoon destination.

Some travel vaccinations may be recommended. We encourage you to visit the Center for Disease Control website for up-to-date travel vaccination recommendations or speak to a medical specialist.

How do we get around Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi is an easy city to get around. Taxis, Uber, and the locally owned Careem Car are plentiful.

However, Abu Dhabi isn’t exactly a walkable city, so unless you’re staying around your hotel or resort’s vicinity the whole time, it’s likely you’ll take a cab to some places.

It’s rare for couples to rent a car. There is a bike-share service for a sustainable honeymoon option.

The new-ish Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus, which is clean, safe, and very efficient, provides jaunts to the top tourist sites in Abu Dhabi.

Is an Abu Dhabi honeymoon package expensive?

Abu Dhabi is a luxurious and relatively expensive honeymoon destination.

The accommodation is high-end, although you will find it’s slightly cheaper than some Dubai hotels.

However, the cost of a honeymoon in Abu Dhabi will vary widely depending on several factors, including the time of year, the type of accommodations, the length of stay, and what kind of honeymoon activities are on your list!

Should we use a travel agent to book our honeymoon in Abu Dhabi?

A reputable travel agent or tour operator who books Abu Dhabi honeymoons regularly can take all the hard work out of planning your trip.

However, if you prefer to book a D-I-Y Abu Dhabi honeymoon package, we’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com.

You can book transfers and ferries, along with tours and excursions on GetYourGuide or Viator.

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change airplanes.

We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover, if travelling on one ticket, for a stress-free experience.

Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

What about travel insurance?

Here at The Honeymoon Guide, we want you to have the best honeymoon possible. Safety is paramount, so it’s important to have travel insurance in place when you book your honeymoon.

If you don’t have travel insurance, check out WorldNomads.com to learn more.

World Nomads provide travel insurance for travellers in over 100 countries. As an affiliate, we receive a fee when you get a quote from World Nomads using this link. We do not represent World Nomads. This is information only and not a recommendation to buy travel insurance from World Nomads.

What should we wear on our Abu Dhabi honeymoon?

Abu Dhabi & the UAE’s dress code is one of the most common things couples are curious about. It’s also the source of one of the most common misconceptions about the region!

While the United Arab Emirates is a conservative Islamic country, common sense prevails. If you’re by the pool and beach, bikinis are fine.

If you’re visiting a mosque, cover up.

We recommend dressing relatively modestly. Abu Dhabi is a very family-friendly destination and also a little more low-key than even Dubai.

For example, leave the hot pants at home, but if you wear shorts or a skirt, maybe cover your shoulders with a t-shirt.

If you wear a sleeveless top, wear longer length trousers or a skirt. We recommend respecting local customs wherever you are in the world for stress-free travel!

Ultimately, Abu Dhabi is a very wealthy and glamorous city, so if designer labels are your thing, make sure you pack them!

What should we pack for a honeymoon in Abu Dhabi?

When packing for your honeymoon in Abu Dhabi, include lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for a hot climate. Think glam, yet comfortable and a little bit modest!

High SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a reusable water bottle are essential for protection against the sun.

Don’t forget swimwear for the beaches and hotel pools. If you’re planning to hit some high-end restaurants, then pack your favorite dresses and heels.

You can buy almost everything you need in Abu Dhabi, too, so don’t overpack!

What should we to buy in Abu Dhabi?

From gold souks to luxury malls, shopping in Abu Dhabi is a treat.

Many big US and European brands have outposts in Abu Dhabi’s malls. You’ll find standalone stores from high street favourites to high-end designer brands, from & Other Stories and Zara to Gucci and Chanel.

Gold and diamond jewellery are good value, and you can have Persian rugs shipped home.

Camel milk products like soaps and chocolates are worth checking out.

Delicious dates, traditional Arabian coffee, perfumes, spices, and incense are the best local products.

Souk Central Market is a good spot to pick up souvenirs.

Can you drink alcohol in Abu Dhabi?

An important question if you envision your Abu Dhabi honeymoon involving cocktails in a chic restaurant by night.

The good news is that it’s not hard to find alcohol in Abu Dhabi.

Although the drinking culture may differ compared to your home country, you can legally drink alcohol if you’re 21 or over. You cannot drink in the street or buy alcohol in the supermarket.

Only licensed premises can serve and sell alcohol. Typically, these are in hotel restaurants and bars or dedicated liquor stores.

Should we bring cash / should we tip in Abu Dhabi?

Cards are widely accepted in Abu Dhabi, but having some Dirham on you is a good idea.

Tipping is customary but not mandatory; consider leaving around 10-15% at restaurants if the service charge isn’t included.
Small tips for taxi drivers and hotel staff are also appreciated.

Abu Dhabi vs Dubai – which is best for a honeymoon?

The age-old debate: Abu Dhabi or Dubai – which is best for a honeymoon?

Both cities are jewels in the United Arab Emirates’ crown, yet they are different. Let’s delve into what sets them apart:

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and is the political and administrative center.

It’s a cultural hub, home to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, with the upcoming Guggenheim offering a more traditional and authentic Emirati experience.

Dubai is the business and tourism capital, known for its skyscrapers and bustling malls.

Dubai is arguably more cosmopolitan, with a large expat population and influences from various cultures around the world, offering a more fast-paced life.

Dubai is all about luxury and glamour, with more tourist activities and iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and Palm Jumeirah.
Abu Dhabi is less high-octane and leans more towards preserving Emirati culture.
If you’re a couple that leans towards cultural experiences and a relaxed pace, Abu Dhabi is your go-to.

On the other hand, if you’re all about the glitz, glamour, and high-octane adventure, Dubai is ideal for you.

Either city is great for a honeymoon, and you can easily take a day trip between the two!

Where can we tag on to a Abu Dhabi for a multi-destination honeymoon?

The world! While not as big as Dubai, Abu Dhabi is still one of the best hubs to fly through.

With connections to Indian Ocean gems like the Maldives and the magical archipelago, Seychelles, you’ve got the perfect city and beach honeymoon.

If you’re planning an adventure honeymoon in Asia, you can add Abu Dhabi to any of these wonderful destinations — Sri Lanka, India, and China.

You can tag Abu Dhabi onto beautiful islands in Thailand or an island-hopping honeymoon in The Philippines.

Maybe a safari is on your honeymoon wish list? There are direct flights to Johannesburg for a stunning honeymoon in South Africa.

Planning an epic honeymoon road trip in Australia or New Zealand? You might fly through the UAE, so why not stop?

Consider a neighboring country in the Middle East like Egypt, Jordan, or Oman for an incredible Arabian adventure.

You can also fly to most European capitals, too.

Abu Dhabi is around 5-7 hours from most European or Asian cities.

Things To Consider Before Booking An Abu Dhabi Honeymoon

While we love to recommend a honeymoon in Abu Dhabi, there are some potential downsides that you might want to consider so you can make a well-informed decision and plan your dream honeymoon!

  • Weather: Abu Dhabi gets extremely hot from May to September. The intense heat may limit outdoor activities during the day.

  • Cost: A honeymoon in Abu Dhabi can be costly. The city is known for its luxury. High quality accommodations, dining, and activities often come with a high price tag.

  • Cultural Differences: Abu Dhabi is different in many ways to US & European cities. It is relatively new so doesn’t have the extensive historical sites of other cities.
It also has stricter laws and cultural norms, especially regarding dress, alcohol and public behaviour. While we don’t see this as a negative, you may prefer a more liberal environment.

  • Choosing Dubai instead: If it’s your first time in the UAE, Dubai may be a better choice as it has more bucket list things to do .
