Planning a romantic Greek Islands honeymoon? Santorini and Mykonos are at the top of almost every honeymoon destination bucket list to Greece, and they are unmissable! There are over 200 islands in the Cyclades archipelago, including Paros, Naxos and Ios, which are also hugely popular. Scratch the surface of these volcanic islands, and you’ll find lesser-known idyllic spots just a ferry ride away – ideal for getting away from the heavy tourist crowds and perfect for a honeymoon island-hop with your love. Think cute boutique hotels, family-run tavernas, beautiful hikes, quieter beaches and all the magic you’d expect from Greece – pretty white-washed architecture, ancient chapels and the deep blues of the Aegean Sea.
Wondering what the best romantic Greek Islands are to pair with Santorini & Mykonos? Here are some of our favourites:
With lunar landscapes, the lesser travelled Cyclades Island of Milos should be at the top of your list after the heavy hitters. It has many beaches and you can dive with shipwrecks off the incredible Sarakiniko Beach. The white rock formations and emerald-aquamarine waters make it one of the most wow beaches in all of Greece. Get off the beaten track at Alogomandra beach or hike down the cliff to Tsigrado Beach.
How to get to Milos Greece? There is a domestic airport on Milos and you can fly directly from Athens or take the ferry from Athens, Mykonos or Santorini.
If you’re looking for a slower pace, then Folegandros is one of the best romantic Greek islands for you. Home to the goddess Artemis, this enchanting, tiny, unspoiled island is stunning, with some of its best beaches only accessible by foot or boat. Expect cliff-side views of the bluest green Aegean Sea and the best of Greek cuisine in beautiful tavernas. Chora is the principal town, with its narrow white-washed alleyways up high on a cliff about the sea. Cars are minimal, which adds to the island’s laid-back traditional feel.
Do Watch the sunrise from Panagia | Hike to Aspropournta Lighthouse | Take a boat to Katergo Beach
How to get to Folegandros? There is no airport on Folegandros. The direct high-speed ferry from Santorini is the best way to get to the island.
Abundant natural beauty, Amorgos, is ideal for those looking for a low-key Cyclades experience. Discover the traditional architecture and wonderful beaches. The stunning bougainvillaea-filled capital Chora is one of the prettiest on the islands of Greece. One of the biggest draws is the cliffside Byzantine Monastery of Panagia Chozoviotissa. Get there early when it opens to see this mesmerizing sacred space.
Stay Aegialis Hotel & Spa
Do Visit Olympia shipwreck | Swim in the caves of Mouros beach
How to get to Amorgos? There is no domestic airport on Amorgos, you can take the ferry from Athens and Santorini (or Naxos and Milos).
Sifnos is one of our favourite romantic Greek islands for foodies. Home to the Festival of Cycladic Gastronomy, the former home of famous Greek chef Nikolaos Tselementes, and as Condé Nast Traveler magazine called it ‘the most delicious Greek island’ – high praise indeed. Explore the white-washed buildings of Kastro and Apollonia, and buy ceramics, a speciality of the island.
Stay Verina Astra
Do hike to the chapel of Eptamartyros | Watch the sunset from Agios Symeon monastery
How to get to Sifnos? There is no domestic airport on Sifnos, you can take the ferry from Athens and Milos. You can also take ferries from Santorini (not always daily) and Mykonos.
Hangout of Lord Byron and Truman Capote, Paros is one of the most popular of the Cyclades islands and ideal as an add-on to your Santorini & Mykonos honeymoon. If you choose Paros, make time to get a little off the beaten track a little and explore its tinier sister island, Antiparos. Although it is so much quieter than its bigger Cycladic neighbours, you can still find beach clubs with a laid-back vibe.
Stay The Rooster
Do sail to uninhabited Despoktio | Find Lord Byron’s signature at Antiparos Cave | Spend the day at Faneromeni
How to get to Antiparos? There is a domestic airport on Paros with flights from Athens, where you can then take the short ferry across to Antiparos.
Tips for planning a Greece honeymoon:
Don’t skip Athens, one of Europe’s most underrated capital cities! Get up early and climb to the Acropolis for the most perfect city sunrise.
Ferries can be a little unreliable, so try to opt for the fastest, most direct option rather than the cheapest! We recommend FerryHopper.com
The tourist areas of Greece get quiet over winter with less ferries and some hotels and restaurants shut down. It can get surprisingly cooler too. Late April to early October is an ideal time to travel. European school holidays fall in July/August so if you can travel outside of these months, you won’t regret it.
Want to island-hop but on a budget, consider a sailing trip with a company like G Adventures – we love this one from Santorini. Add on a wow Santorini honeymoon hotel at the end for a few days. We love Cavo Tagoo, Canaves Epitome and Andronis Boutique
Eat all the Greek cuisine – moussaka, tzatziki, gyros and take home some Greek wine and olive oil!
