With the most scenic wilderness and volcanic landscapes plus welcoming Maori culture, winter sports, wineries and an expansive coastline, a honeymoon in New Zealand is a superabundance of experiences.

Whatever your jam is — gastronomy, beaches, fishing, golfing, horse riding or skydiving, you will find it in this hospitable nation. Often referred to as “Middle-Earth” because of the connection to the Lord of the Rings movies, this incredible country has something to offer every couple.

Start your honeymoon in New Zealand by hiring a vehicle (a motorhome/camper van is ideal, so you don’t have to pack up every day). Download a honeymoon playlist and get exploring these wonderful islands on a romantic honeymoon road trip. Most couples will start in cosmopolitan Auckland. It’s the perfect jump-off point on the North Island. Head north for the subtropical Bay of Islands. Learn about Māori history in Waitangi. Take a boat to Waiheke Island for wine tasting.

Laze on the beaches of the Coromandel Peninsula. This beautiful area is packed full of things to do, too. Go sea kayaking at Cathedral Cove. Dig your own hot pool at Hot Water Beach. See the glowworm caves twinkling at Tauranga. Experience the hot springs, mud pools and geysers at Rotorua. Explore the lush green landscape of the Shire at the Hobbiton Movie Set. Hikers will love the awe-inspiring Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park.

Work your way through the stunning North Island landscapes to the capital, Wellington, before taking the journey across the Cook Strait to Blenheim on South Island. Explore the coastal paradise at Abel Tasman National Park and go whale watching at Kaikoura. Two beautiful highlights of a honeymoon in New Zealand. Take a helicopter ride to Franz Josef Glacier and a street art tour of Christchurch. Marvel at the alpine scenery of Mount Cook National Park. Consider one of the world’s most breathtaking train journeys, the TranzAlpine train. Take a helicopter ride to Fox Glacier.

On the shore of Lake Wakatipu, the adventure honeymoon capital of the world, Queenstown, awaits. This is the place to get your adrenaline pumping! Go whitewater rafting, bungee jumping, zip lining, skydiving and biking, to name a few (you could spend your whole honeymoon in New Zealand right here!). Make time for one of New Zealand’s highlights, Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park (now known by its Māori name, Piopiotahi).

Driving through fields of wildflowers, walking through ancient forests, kayaking in caves, marvelling at towering mountains or relaxing on a golden sand beach, you can find it all on your honeymoon in New Zealand.

If you’re lucky enough to have time to fit all the above and still have time for a multi-destination honeymoon, then there are some wonderful destinations in Oceania. Australia is less than 4 hours away. There are many beautiful paradise island nations too. Consider an island hopping adventure in French Polynesia. The most famous island, Bora Bora, is one of the most popular destinations couples search for on The Honeymoon Guide! Consider a luxury island in Fiji. You could fly via VancouverLos Angeles is a great option too. One of our favourite underrated cities, for a honeymoon and a perfect stopover option on a honeymoon in New Zealand.
