One of the planet’s top bucket-list destinations, a honeymoon in Peru is perfect for adventure lovers. Dotted with archaeological ruins, the most famous being, of course, Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail, and particularly, passing through the Sun Gate at sunrise, is one of the world’s most famous travel experiences and is not to be missed (warning: permits are needed and book out early).

Not up for hiking for a couple of days? You can also use the former centre of the Inca empire turned Spanish colonial city, Cusco, as a jumping-off point to take the train to these magical ruins. Cuzco is lively with colourful markets and other marks of the Inca.

Did we mention the cuisine? Peruvian food is one of the biggest cultural exports and we recommend exploring the restaurant scene in Lima, which is one of the most underrated capitals on the continent.

Hit the beach at Mancora, sail down the Amazon River, fly over the Nazca Lines or experience indigenous life at Lake Titicaca. Peru truly is a heavy hitter for a deep cultural and outdoor South American experience.

The best time to visit Peru for a honeymoon is during the dry season from May to October. You will experience rain from November to April with the wettest months December to March. The Inca Trail closes in February
